Thanks a million for this tip on the phosphate remover. This has been a game changer for me. I live in Oklahoma City in an area with lots of trees, windy weather, and super sunny weather. Since I moved to a new house with a pool, I had been constantly fighting green algae with a barrage of liquid chlorine, tablets, bags upon bags of shock--you name it. I was also scrubbing with a brush constantly and the algae came back EVERY WEEK with a vengeance. I even changed the water out, only to have the same problem. I started using this phosphate remover and have been following up with small doses every few weeks and it's been the magic bullet I've been looking for. My best guess is that we just have tons and tons of airborne organic particles landing in the pool that were feeding the algae. This was the solution--only took me about 18 months to figure it out. THANK YOU!!

Thanks for the information....I took your advice and followed the steps.....I had yellow mustard algae and never thought I would ever get rid of it....you said it right, after I spent hundreds of dollars on chemicals including algaecides the algae would keep coming back time after time while my water turned a teal color at best and most times I could not see the floor of my pool for the green cloudy coloring. After buying the phosphate treatment online and following the directions on the bottle, my pool turned from a swampy green to a cloudy blue...after letting the sand filter run for a few days the cloudiness cleared up and I vaccumed the dead algae to waste. After 1 week I had my pool crystal clear....thanks Kenny for sharing your knowledge!

Hi there! I live in Costa Rica and we don’t have PR10,000. I got Alum Sulfate very cheap instead, and got my pool green to blue in one day. Just by following your recipe: Triclore and the sulfate. The only thing I did different is that I turned off the pump for 24hours and vacuum out to waste next day since the sulfate works killing the phosphate but also as a flokulant. Now I am refilling about 3inches of water, to put clorine and ph to level. Anyway, now is sparkling..thanks!

My pool was dark green for a week, I was being instructed by one of the pool stores to add a bag of shock every day & 2 days later a lot of algaecide.. With NO improvement in 7 days. I was feeling pretty desperate. I decided to watch a bunch of KZbin.. I came across your video after you explained the algae and Phosphate relationship ..I ran to the garage and put a heavy dose of phosphate remover in the pool.. ( small pool 8 x 16 x 4 salt, fiberglass). Within 2 hours I swear I saw the green get lighter, by the next day a game changer.. Within 24 hours my pool was sparkling.. THANK YOU!! Apparently the store doesn't check phosphates. Will upon request! You would think after I was there 3 x in 6 days they would of. They also said not to put the Hayward cartridge in while I using the chemicals they suggested.. Wrong I put it in & it removed the algae. Cleaned filter 2 x a day.. I am impressed and so grateful I found your video.. I will be doing more research and buying chemicals in bulk. My goal is to stop spending $40 every other week on shock etc. adding 1 oz Phosphate Remover weekly.

I love your videos, so practical and down to earth. As a retired biologist, I would like to make one correction. Algae as a plant needs several elements to grow, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc. But phosphorus is what we call the limiting factor for plant growth. All other things can be there but without enough phosphorous growth is inhibited. A minor distinction maybe from your point of view. Anyway, thanks for the info, I'm buy some PR-10000 today. Thanks again for your videos.

Cyanuric acid level is the x-factor on how to treat algae in the swim season. PR1000 works great in certain situations, and sodium bromide in others. I too am not for killing algae with trace metals. Good info here though! Especially mentioning trichlor shock as most will just use cal hypo all the time.

Thanks again for this one. I did your black algae last year, and this year I was puzzled as my chemical levels were normal, but I cannot keep the algae out. within a week of cleaning my pool (i.e. brushing the green algae of the walls) it would be right back the next week. I never had that problem last year and I was befuddled as to what in the heck is going on this year. I thought it was from high ph levels but I got that back in check and still keep getting the algae along the sides of pool. Now I know. I'm sure that my phosphates are through the roof as we have had many wind storms that have blown so much dirt and vegetation from the adjacent golf course that I had to clean my filters once before I could finish cleaning the rest of the pool due to so much vegetation. I have some of the PR-10000 I bought last year but never had to use it and some left over trichlor from last years black algae treatment. it looks like I will need to use it now. Thanks again. So far all of your videos have been very helpful and have helped as explained. Thanks again.

This was very helpful. The house we moved into has many many trees around in the yard. I get way more pollen off of them. And there is a stupid planting area in the screened in lanai. I think I am getting a lot of that in the pool and it is causing the algae. Thanks so much for all the useful information.

Might work in AZ but in NY I filled my pool with all new water and tested it and the phosphates were through the roof. The tap water and rain water just a ton. Can’t eliminate phosphates. Gotta keep the pool balanced and when you get a lot of rain, humidity or heat wave you need some algecide period.

Ive had my pool for 10 years. I use cotton balls in my filter that I wash at the end of the season. I spen $12/yr on keeping my crystal clear the entire season. If I am away for 3 weeks and dont touch the pool, I come home to a crystal clear pool. I the beginning when I open pool, I put in 1/4 cup of Copper Sulfate and turn on filter and run for 4 hrs a day. I add nothing else. The water is perfectly clear. About 1/2 way thru the season, I add1/4 cup sulfate and thats all I ever add to my pool. No Chemicals, no chlorine. My neighbor has the identical pool as me. When they go on vacation, they need to have someone come and do tests and chemicals or he comes home to a green pool. My Friend and I have a home in Vegas that has an in ground. We put in the copper sufate in the skimmer filter and whenever we go out there, usually1 time every 6 weeks, the pool is always clear. Just keep solar cover on to keep debris from bottom.

THIS was excellent info. I got an Intex 32 foot pool with sand filter and salt water pump for therapeutic swimming. I have worked very hard to rid my body of mercury and other toxins and battled lyme disease for 10 yrs, now in remission thank God! I knew there had to be a better way to get rid of the funk in my pool. SO, I have some mustard algae and a salt water system, do I do the exact things you said to or are there other adjustments? I love my salt water, it helps my health so much and I do not want to mess that up! Thanks for your research and knowledge of healthy things!

Suzanne Taylor some stores do carry it. But if not you can order it online. I’d suggest keeping the cover off so the pool water stays cooler. Algae likes a warm environment to grow in.

Costa Rica: I painted my pool last year and I see black algae speckled on the floor after the "windy season". I am afraid that TriClor would harm the paint. I like your solution using Phosphate it makes sense to starve the algae. I hope I can find PR-1000 here, thank you!

Awesome video, sir. One point to challenge is your usage of 'heavy metals'. While copper and silver both fall into the heavy metal category simply due to their density, silver is not toxic to humans, and copper, only in large amounts. Going to be hard to get that amount of either in your pool. Just wanted to share. Very helpful video - am in North Phoenix and going through this exact same brutal cycle - never thought of phosphates before.

Hi Diesel I appreciate your comment and agree with you. In fact our family has been using colloidal silver for decades for everything from, cold, sore throats and especially pink eye (works wonders). Thank you for clarifying.

I was wondering if you have any phosphate tester you'd recommend so I can know for sure how much phosphates are in my pool? Thanks so much for passing along this information!!!!! It was very helpful to understand what's going on in my pool. I was stuck in the algecide cycle for the past few years and all the pool stores wanted to do was sell me more/stronger algecide and I was going through lots of chlorine. My amateur tip: I have an above ground pool with plastic stairs. One thing to note that might be helpful for others out there is to look closely at your stairs for algae. I had a funny feeling about them and took the stairs out and they were completely covered with algae both outside AND more importantly - inside the stairs!!! I took them apart and algae was coming out in sheets!!! The stairs were basically an algae factory. I completely cleaned/bleached them and left them out of the pool in the sun for a day. The pool was already clearing up within an hour or two that I took the stairs out of the pool!
@PoolSchooler4 жыл бұрын
Hello Tim and thanks for the comments. ALSO, algaecides notoriously leach up the chlorine in your pool. Regarding phosphate tests. I'd suggest taking a sample to your pool supply store and have them test it (they should do it for free). If not Aquacheck makes a phosphate test strip that works well. Heres a link to it from Lowes: www.lowes.com/pd/AquaChek-AquaChek-Phosphate-Swimming-Pool-Test-Strips-20-Count/1002550202. But you can do a google search and find them elsewhere. Hope you'll subscribe to and share my channel.

Heat will for sure burn trough a lot more chemicals especially chlorine. I'd keep fighting with phosphate remover, NOTE; NOT ALL PHOSPHATE REMOVERS ARE CREATED THE SAME. I've tried soooo many and the best one I've found is Orenda's PR 10,000 Phosphate Remover Concentrate. It's pricey but worth it for me and my clients. Sometimes you may have to "kill your pool" to get the algae and phosphates under control. I'll try to do a video on how to do this soon. Pool RX, Phosphate remover chlorine use will crash! Much easier on the skin. Pool people don't want you to know about Pool RX because it puts them out of business!!! Pool RX lasts about 6-months when you can then add a recharge kit. After one year replace the whole unit. Killed all algea even the black hard to kill crap! So Cal with dust, horses nearby so pool maintenance was a night mare until I started the above parsmaters. Simple pool test strip kit, $14 phosphorus test kit, and I use chlorine tabs with cyaranic acid (stabilizes chlorine). Good quality auto pool cleaner and you will spend allot less time messing with your pool and enjoying it more!!!

I usually don't watch too many "pool" videos on here due to most people seem to be clueless. That was until I just ran into your channel !! Your great. I am a second generation pool store/construction co. owner and have the same views as you express here in this video (I subscribed). I do however have one question, what do you do if the pools you are treating for phosphates already use trichlor? The cyanuric acid level must be ideal before treatment correct? I always tell our customers that come in wanting to by algaecide to bring me a sample of water to test for phosphates before they commit to anything. Youd be surprised at how many pool owners watch misleading you tube videos ! I will definitely recommend they watch yours.

a m thank you for your kind words. I’m delighted that you find them helpful and accurate. Regarding cya. Yes. All chem levels should be in the ideal ranges first and foremost. I’d cya is low or high the chlorine won’t be as effective.

@@PoolSchooler if the cya is too low you will not be able to hold a residual chlorine reading. If it is too high the chlorine becomes very innaffective at sanitizing

Mind blown!! So what I'm getting is add phosphate remover --> wait a few days to clean filter --> add phosphate remover again?
@PoolSchooler4 ай бұрын
Almost. You may not have to clean the filter after every dose. It really depends on how much phosphates you have and how clean your filter was to begin with (and the type of filter). If you feel you have a big phosphate problem start by cleaning your filter then treat for phosphates (even if you dose it every couple of days) then when you're all done, clean the filter again. If you have a sand filter you can backwash it every day to help clear it out. DE filter? start w/ clean DE then clean when you're all done with treating the pool.
