Wish you guys the best of luck, safety and prayers. But no matter how good of a boater, captain, or how many skills, you think you have. Even the size of your vessel. Mother nature and her force, especially the ocean. It will throw anything it wants around like a 4ft inflatable raft, we all had when we were kids. I do a lot of hiding in the mangroves and backcountry, especially those 20 min Sumner storms. But that's in the keys. But out off shore, there's nowhere to run and hide. God bless. 🚤 🙏 😎

While this trip was epic for your group, 62 years ago my dad & myself traveled from West Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island & back in an 18 foot skiff powered by an 80HP Volvo I/O. We made the trip with another same size craft & encountered 6 - 8 foot swells along the way. My Dad wad an excellent boater & this was accomplished decades before modern electronics like chart plotters & Loran or GPS. You maybe know something about using Nautical charts & offsets for the Gulf Stream Current. You probably do not know how to use a sextant for navigation but the "old timers" did.

However, I definitely won't go without other boats with me. What time of year is best to make the crossing? Also, what do you look for in the weather while trying to make the decisions? I would love to do this someday, but want to be more prepared.

The trip from florida to bahamas can be done in any boat that floats. Its not a feat that requires magic or even special skills. Like with any trip you do have to plan for the weather. I get disgusted when people tell you that you shouldn’t do this. Any boat anywhere with planning. Im not knocking your channel just clarifying the facts. I know people who have made it easily on small hobby cats. People have done it with 8’ 6” dinghies. You have to understand that when you tell people they shouldn’t do this it discourages them when in fact its simple if you plan the route
@LifeByTheBow
@LifeByTheBow Жыл бұрын
I agree. I just think that if someone heard that you could do it in anything, it might be perceived the incorrect way. When your going out on the boat normally you need to have a plan. Crossing open ocean you need to be very careful and have a very planned out itinerary. We appreciate you explaining it in greater detail and hopefully people will understand that and not just decide to go on a whim.

If you had the equipment you should have pointed that out. Most people have no idea how quickly things can go bad on the water and die because they are unprepared. Several times every each I read of people who are on boats that cost over 100,000 and drown because they do have simple things. My comment was not intended to be negative and I don't need your prayers.
