A Turbocharger in the Garrett GT40/GT42 range should be suitable when you want to keep it below 1000hp. Big question right now is: do you want to use SC and TC individually for low and high rpm respectively so your SC e.g. will be bypassed at higher rpm? This kind of system is easier in general setup questions (pipes, bypass valves and that kind of stuff), but the software tuning will be challenging regarding transition areas within the maps for a smooth ride quality. If you want to have a dual stage charge system the order of SC and TC is really important. In this case I would put the SC before the TC, because this SC style definitely won't like the high pressure the TC can put out. That way you also enable the TC to reach higher boost pressures in which case it might be a good idea to move to a TC one or two sizes bigger. If you want to see an example from series production, look up the VW 1.4 TSI twincharger engine from the 2000s (not the modern 1.4 TSI). That one is also using both a TC and a SC. But this system idea never made it out of this single engine configuration at VW.

Couple more ideas/suggestions. I'd try hand-porting the oil pump and cylinder heads. The oil pump is easy to do and as far as the head goes, if you want to just gasket match, you can (Which is easy) or if you want to challenge yourself, then you can work on the bowls. Since the eagle heads bring more compression, but you're throwing boost at it, you may want to deshroud the valves, which will increase the cc of the heads, bringing down the CR. Of course you could run a thicker head gasket also. If you need more space in the engine bay, you could run an electric water pump and an electric steering rack where the motor is either on the shaft (Saturn Vue/Prius style) or on the rack itself (S550 Mustang style). Either way gets rid of the PS pump. I'm building an LS engine right now, and the bottom end hardware on the hemi is much more stout than the LS. The bolts are thicker, and I think the main caps are bigger (Wider) even though they only run 4 bolts instead of 6.

I'm definitely thinking of ditching the stock power steering pump for an electric unit. Trying to see what kind of room I have first. It's going to be a head scratcher for sure...

Simply put, pick turbo that meets your needs. Choose compressor side that can deliver enough air for your expected HP goal regardless of the engine set up (SC or non, 4 banger, 6 or v8). Probably 800ish hp? And go with a free flowing turbine side, maybe 1.32 A/R because at lower rpms engine will act as a bigger displacement than a 5.7, around 8 liter equivalent. My guess is at lower/mid rpms the turbo/sc combo will have a compounding effect, but at higher load and rpm turbo will light up and surpass what SC can process. So air will be moving thru the SC but not compressed any further. It'd be good for you to get a professional tuner in on this project

I guess twin charging in gonna become a new KZbin trend for builds lol, ItsJusta6 and Westin Champlin built twin charged Hellcats. Either way, this one interests me more since you're doing all the fabrication for the turbo and blower manifold.
@The3chordwonder
@The3chordwonder 2 жыл бұрын
The "right" answer depends on where you want the boost. Since it's a PD blower, it's going to make tq everywhere, so you don't really need to make up for poor low speed boost response like a Centrifugal SC. I would size it like this. As far as what the turbo see's, it's going to be the effective engine size of the N/A + SC engine. e.g. the exhaust output will be the 5.7 + whatever you increase it to via boost. Since we know you effectively double the size of the engine every 14.7 psi, you can up the size of the engine and buy your turbo accordingly. I'm guessing you aren't going to build the internals, so I would guess you'd probably run it at around 7 psi, or about 50% larger. So your 5.7 essentially becomes a 8.6L engine. So from there, you can pick your turbo. Of course, all of this said, I think you're just trying to have some fun, and probably trying to do it on the cheap. So I'd honestly just get a GT40 style turbo from vsracing or any of the clones that Richard Holdener has tested. They are dirt cheap, should spool up very quick. They will probably be too small, and end up giving you a lot of backpressure at higher RPM's, but if you're not doing pistons and rods (Personally) I wouldn't spin it beyond the factory limiter anyway. If you want to complicate your life even more, just bolt two of the turbos on and that would probably alleviate the backpressure problem. Very much looking forward to the series.

Nice project! Don't you actually want to lower the compression ratio a bit instead of raising it? Otherwise you are going to have to use super high octane fuel and super stout internals. The cylinder pressures are going to be insane. What is the target boost, compression ratio and fuel octane?
@BWADaniel
@BWADaniel 2 жыл бұрын
He should be okay. You typically won’t need to change to a better gas with higher compression unless the compression is WAY higher. Stock compression, even on one that’s been bored out, you should definitely be okay. Even on my 4 wheeler, stock compression is 9:1. People use pump gas up until 12:1 compression. My piston is rated for Pump or Race Gas.
@ReignitedAuto
@ReignitedAuto 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, as I'll go over in the next video it basically is only bumping the compression one point from 9.6 to 10.5 and that's still definitely in a useable range. 👍 Target boost is a good question, I don't think I want to go over 15psi at the start, then work my way up from there.
@mbaladon
@mbaladon 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReignitedAuto Isn't the stock compression already 10.5 in the 5.7? The Hellcat has a 9.5:1 and Chevy's LT4 is 10:1 so I would have thought to go down a bit instead of up. Anyway, looking forward to the next one!

I need some info on the NAG 5 speed trans. Can I replace my truck 5speed with a car 5 speed? I don't like the weird 3rd gear in the truck transmissions and would rather have a normal 3rd gear because it doesnt suit my driving habits and how i use my truck. Would the truck computer need to be tuned for a car trans? I have a 2010 Ram 1500. I love watching your content on KZbin. You are full of very valuable information and tips on these Hemi engines. Your information on the 3rd gen oil pumps helped me out a lot. I'll see well over 200,000 miles because of it. It could potentially be done, but it would be a nightmare to make it all work. The NAG actually has a separate TCM controller whereas the stock trans computer is built into the PCM. Getting everything to talk properly would be very difficult. As an alternative I would think about changing your rear gear ratio, this could effectively change the way 3rd gear feels overall. 👍

Unfortunately no, but you can go one of two ways. Either you keep the solenoids in place and just buy a tuner to turn the system off, or you remove the solenoids, replace all the lifters with non MDS lifters, and then buy a tuner to turn the system off. I personally think it's better to remove it entirely since you'll get better oil flow through the lifter bores. But obviously it's more expensive and more work.

@@ReignitedAuto alright cool, thank you very much. Would i also need to buy the block off plugs after removing the solenoids or would it be fine leaving that space open?

Yessir that's correct, this is a 2006 ram 1500 block, so that's why I went with the Melling high volume pump 👍 2009+ I'd go with the Hellcat for sure.

@VzoPresidential honestly I'm not sure. I suspect if you picked up 100hp you'd be doing pretty well.
