Here's a funny for you. Back in 70's when CB radios were all the rage we installed a CB in my friend's truck. It would work in the back yard but when he drove down the road it would. After repeating this routine several times we discovered we had tapped into the power line that causes the interior light to come on. The CB only worked when the door was open.

Ha! I pulled a dumb stunt like that once. Except it was with emergency amber lights. They would work in the daytime (since my interior lights didnt turn on during the day) and at night when I'd open the door, the lights would die... Took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out the problem...

Thanks to you I likely won't need to pay $100 for this hookup. :) It's always great to have these wired into those stubborn vehicles with electrical problems. Yes, the obvious rapid ticking noise indicating a dead battery is a giveaway but it's best to see where it's at, like a total drain or something just under 12.6v. From there decide if the battery cells are shot or there's a small parasitic draw when the auto is off. I ripped my volt pod out of my old beater and installing on my 1999 Eclipse which was running fine until last summer when everything went bonkers. Replaced battery, changed the terminals, installed new alternator, replaced a blown amplifier... and now the ignition cylinder will take the key but I have to fight it to turn. It's always something, I tell ya what. >:(

I went straight off the battery with a relay wired to a swiched power source for the most accurate reading.

The non turbo Supra's came with voltmeters in place of the boost gauge and its a fairly easy swap, but your way is much more fancy pants. The amber should help at night so it doesn't blind ya too.

You forgot to turn off your headlights when you took the keys out at the end of the video, so you will actually get to see it working when it's reading zero in a few hours. Good job 👌

If you get the premium series, gauges with the warning feature you can do that.

Little off topic but on my 90 supra i reused the headlight washer button for a push start. Its works as anti theft too because trying to start the car with the key the car acts like it has a dead battery. And the push start also just gives me another reason to say because race car

The problem I'm having is that all the key on power wires in my car are 1 volt less than the battery actually is. The only thing I can think of is putting a relay in.

really useful video, my first time worked in this thing and I did it. anyway I have a question and I hope you help with it. so I have a water temp gauge, SAAS model, I used you method for wiring, but i connect the white wire to cig light for dash light, red wire for ignition switch, I used expandable fuse wire and connect to the fuses box under fuel pump fuse and it's work perfect, black and green wires done. but the orange wire for led memory I don't know how to do it or where to connect it!? any instruction on that and what function to use on multimeter would be appreciated. by theway my car is skyline r31 s3

thanks for watching and Im glad the video helped. Im pretty sure you would connect that organge wire to head lights or head light switch, so when they turn on that orange wire gets power and changes the color of the gauge.

I have a question about this install. Since you used the wire where the headlight switch feeds the fog light switch does the gauge turn white again when you turn on your high beams? The reason I wonder is a lot of cars are set up so that when you turn on your high beams it cuts the fog light feed so they aren't both on at the same time.

Matthew Laycock the gauge stayed amber when the high beams turned on, it only change color if the the headlights were on or off

***** have you ever heard of the path of least resistance our skin is far to resisive to let 12 volts pass through. a car battery can deliver up to 600 amps. go ahead and touch the two battery terminals and you wont feel a thing. if it were on your tounge it would be a different story as it is less resistive. current does not mean shit if there is not enough voltage to pass the skin you cannot get shocked.

smallenginedude71 yes this is true, at least some people online are smart. if you touch both ends yes electricity goes through your body to the other end, but most of it takes the easiest path which is copper wire or other metals...... its not a perceived shock

No, with enough voltage. Higher the voltage the easier it is to overcome a certain resistance. As far as I can remember it requires over 40 volts to break the human skin resistance.

almost no cars have volt gauges, ive never owned a car with one and ive owned like 7 cars. If someone wants to monitor voltage then they would get volt gauge, they are also good diagnostic tools. And if you are so against them, why did you watch a video titled "VOLT GAUGE INSTALL" ?

came up in my sugestions, not really sure, but oh wow that interesting, ive had quite a few cars and they all had a volts gauge, i personally would never double up on a gauge that already came factory, i guess in my personal opinion having a whole gauge "pod" just looks silly with a volts gauge. if i was going to add one to monitor volts id prolly go with a lcd screen readout
