On the Dua Lipa track: I also found it annoying as hell but I interpreted what she was trying to say differently. I didn’t see it as her saying women are superior as that women are forced to grow up so much faster because of the kind of issues that you mentioned such as covering up, etc. people are quick to brush a side an action with the phrase “boys will be boys,” but even from childhood, girls never get that luxury. So yeah, the song gets on my nerves but I think that’s what she was going for

As a woman, I agree with the rest of the video mostly, but the lyric “boys will be boys but girls will be women” or whatever isn’t a great example of “women being above men.” I understand if you see it that way, but I think she was taking more of a shot towards the “boys will be boys” attitude that easily disregards the wrongdoings men do to women. I don’t think it’s saying we are above, it’s saying fuck that state of mind that “boys will be boys,” to excuse the dumb shit that bad men do. This is why I don't think that pop music is the best genre for deep political or protest songs. Pop music by definition is about oversimplifying an idea to fit with a catchy melody and four chords, verse-chorus structure, and a 3.5 minute runtime. This works for songs about love, heartbreak, and fun because those are abstract emotions that can be tackled from many angles. But politics is so complex and requires a bit more lyrical nuance that the nature of pop music isn't equipped to handle.

But when it literally just feels like politics being shoved down my throat just to be music that "says something" or "stands for something", it's not being done right. Politics in music is supposed to make you stop and think about what the artist is trying to say, its supposed to make you question things. Its not supposed to make you feel like artists are shouting at you and cramming simplistic and often one-sided ideas into your head without any thought. It seems like nowadays many artists trying to be "woke" are just tossing slogans around instead of trying to make thought provoking points about the world and politics.

With "You Need To Calm Down", I think the idea of the song is each verse being about a specific way in which haters try to tear you down when in reality they just need to calm down. The first verse is more introspective and about Taylor specifically. The second verse is about haters in the form of homophobes. And the third verse is about how women are stronger together than divided by hate. The entire song is about internet trolls and haters, just from different angles. I don't think it makes Taylor self-centered to include herself in the conversation and I certainly don't think she was equating her issues with the issues LGBTQ people deal with.

one of the things that really bugs me about Halsey is that she definitely gaslights these things and then tries to dodge responsibility...like when she tweeted about how hotels don't have shampoo that caters to POC and then later on tweeted this feigned bemusement like, "wow all i have to do is say one thing and everything gets turned upside down!" as if she just accidentally fell into that out of her own awesome wokeness rather than deliberately trying to get something started. Or when she bitched out a Twitter user for interpreting lyrics of her's about "playing with a guy's stick shift" as being about handjobs when really, supreme artist Halsey totally only meant it as driving a car. And then there are times when she makes situations all about her, talking out of both sides of her mouth, missing the point of the grander scheme, like when she complained in an interview about how people weren't sufficiently in awe of a poem she read at a women's rights rally only then to say in almost the same breath that sooooo many people reached out to her about how life-affirming it was so like......she got the response she wanted, but because the people at the rally, which WASN'T ALL ABOUT HER, didn't fall to their knees, its a big loss? Way to co-opt wokeness and make it all about you while pretending you're NOT this self-absorbed princess.

Pretty much one of the reasons I stopped listening to pop music. 2017 was pretty much the start of all this. Right now, I just want a story that’s relatable. I just want escapism when it comes to today’s music.

I agree

Sucks that Michael Jackson isn't around making music anymore, because all of that you described in that last part about escapism and telling a story is what he did with his music, but that depends whether you like his music or not

Manuel David Rendon Acevedo I admired it. He was one of the pop artists that had a lot of effort put into his work. Today, there’re barely any (besides Carly Rae Jepsen) that put effort or innovation into their music. And all the ones that people overhype are just off - putting and fake.
@Merdicano4 жыл бұрын
@@quentinbringthenumetalchil5125 same, I miss MJ, I wish more artists would hold him as a influence for their music, I'd also say that History had some of that similar themes of politics as well, but in a form that was respectable and non-controversial
@captainayaaya282 жыл бұрын
r/lewronggeneration believe it or not, not every single pop song these days are about politics. Even from artist he mentioned, like Dua Lipa and Taylor Swift, has songs not about politics and puts effort into their music (Future Nostalgia, folklore and evermore are some amazing albums and with the exception of one or two songs none of them really talk about politic)

6:59 you do know men go through those issues right? I don’t understand why women try to own those issues and why they find it insulting to be told that you can only control yourself 9:14 the only people that have a say about what goes on in your bed is you and the person I’m supposed to guess is sleeping with you. Also if you didn’t put it out there then we couldn’t give our opinions but you keeping things behind closed doors is a bigoted thing to say Halsey you bigot. Oh she’s not a bigot she’s empowered *double standards everywhere*

Halsey is basically a synonym to fake woke.

i feel like poppy is a good example of an artist that can convey a political message in a subtle and powerful way. for example, her song ‘time is up’ touches on global warming and the environment without being extremely cheesy and fake woke. Another one is ‘Meat’ which discusses animal cruelty within the meat industry. Anyone can make an amazing song about a current movement/political cause without name dropping politicians and aging the song.

I absolutely hate the shallow, surface level shit that pop says. Ava Max is probably the worst. All of the cliché we heard a hundred times is pretending to be mindblowing

dua has spoken out about sexism many times and always emphasises how she wants men and women to be equal so i don’t think she wanted the lyric to be interpreted like that. I think she was talking about the fact that ‘boys will be boys’ is a common phrase used to excuse sexist behaviour and to deal with it women have to grow up a bit faster which is also what is expected of them. Girls have to be taught to behave a certain way to not cause any problems for boys while boys generally need to be taught more on how to treat girls which means that they’re maturity levels are different. (i’m aware that this isn’t always the case but seems to be the norm)

I think that Taylor Swift's The Man does have equality messages in there, but I see it as, "Sure, maybe men get treated better, but I'd be the best dang man ever if I was born one." Weird message, but one that somewhat detracts from the false equality message.

The song is more about her experience and the video was a political stance. Each line is something taylor had to deal with, she's saying it wouldve been received differently if she was a man x

@brandon roberts I mean she does suck at it but I didn't really see that song as really political.
@no_stick_drummer27354 жыл бұрын
@brandon roberts but everyone wanted her to speak out on anything political? She was okay at doing it. But she's not that good at doing that so it's something along those lines of You ask a stupid question you get a stupid answer.
@no_stick_drummer27354 жыл бұрын
@brandon roberts I think they did that because they knew she didn't know that much about politics so they could turn it around on her and make her look stupid

what about Lady gaga's born this way? first song to adress and legitimate the LGBT community without any sensorship, the strong and artistic statement about birth and god loving gays was so provoking at the time (2011) it cost her many bannings around the globe.

I’ll be moderating comments closely. If anyone actually watches the video (or my channel) it should be clear that I’m not right wing nor do I agree with much anything they believe. However, while I personally lean left I’m more of a centrist. I weigh things on a case by case basis. Thanks for watching!

I feel like so much genuine activism and fighting against bigotry often gets shadowed by people being fake woke for the sake of some sort of selfish personal gain. At this point I can say that I am very much a leftist punk, mostly due to gradually being more and more educated on marginalized groups and what they go through, as well as being a part of some of them as well. it is beyond frustrating to be called an sjw when at this point many ppl just use that term for anyone who cares about others or wants to champion for human rights. I also just think that sjw is such a bad term too. Because without any context of anything, "social justice warrior" sounds like a noble title. I think calling these people fake woke is far more accurate imo. But yeah. I really think more people need to distinguish between caring about a cause and capitalizing on it
@Cla2264 жыл бұрын
Completely agree, most of the time they just sing about those things to seem "relatable" but they don't actually care about they issue, cause they just talk and don't actually do anything.
@davidemarconi91464 жыл бұрын
The problem is not in the lyrics, the problem is in the ideas of these artists, which are dumb and stupid, or in general the artist has not really the knowledge or the instruments to say something useful or interesting about a problematic topic

I just find it quite irritating that. Yes, Taylor is the biggest artist in the world that people seem to think she isn’t allowed to have political overtones in her songs. Some completely miss interpreting The Man all together. It’s more calling out double standards more than anything. She’s fully aware of her privilege. Sometimes at a point even she hates it as well. For me YNTCD is more of STFU it’s not serious what I’m doing or what a group of people or a community leave these people alone and let them do their own thing.
