really like the direction Comic is going. I realize that committing to a project like this takes many hours and days and months to complete but they still have a lot to do before this can be used as a completed desktop. I will try it again in a couple of months. Looking forward to a completed desktop mean while I will stay with XFCE yes the old reliable desktop with no surprises every thing just works.

Unparalleled? No. Stunning? No. It is off to a great start, but it has quite a ways to go. It is Alpha so yeah it is great at this stage.

Exactly, its impressive for what it is, but i expected it to take a long time to be polished. I tried it and found it unusable for me atm. And i had to switch from Pop OS to Linux Mint with gnome 😥 as Pop OS felt just too old for me now. After using Pip OS for almost 8 years...

@sheldonkupa9120 yeah any alpha wouldn't be usable. Even a beta shouldn't be used when you're doing serious work. It's unfair to want to switch to it and use it now. Companies don't release their Alpha versions to the public so they never get to know, I'm happy System76 released and it's becoming a community effort in going from an Alpha to a final release.

@sheldonkupa9120 I also agree that after the launch of GNOME 40 and seeing the recent advancements in Cinnamon, the old GNOME desktop that we fell in love with seems outdated. And I firmly believe COSMIC would do a fantastic job when it eventually does release.

I'll probably use Pop OS again once it hits beta status. I really liked the old Gnome-based desktop. When PopOS 22.04 became obsolete (in Oct '22) I switched to Manjaro (and loved it and still love it), but Pop has a special place.
@GsMultiverse3 ай бұрын
I like the GNOME based desktop too, but why do you say Pop OS 22.04 became obsolete? I still use it to this day and it has the latest kernel, latest software packages and stuff.
@sheldonkupa91203 ай бұрын
Yeah same, Pop OS is really a bit behind with the software versions it uses. After almost 8 years of using it, i switched to Linux Mint with gnome. I liked how Pop OS modified gnome and that made me use gnome exclusively.
@GsMultiverse3 ай бұрын
Yeah me too. I mean, yeah some of the things can get a little old, but I'm thankful they update the kernel very frequently and the software from the latest gnome versions is included as well.
@konradzuse47782 ай бұрын
@@GsMultiverse Really? Interesting. Maybe I should give it another try. However, our needs may differ, as I am a software developer and like to have relatively recent libraries. Flatpak does not help me with that, and pip (for python) is not really what I like to be the ruling package manager on my own system. But I have to admit that I jumped ship when Ubuntu 22.10 was released and it became clear that Pop!_OS wouldn't follow suit with that update.
@GsMultiverse2 ай бұрын
@konradzuse4778 okay if you're a software developer and if you need the latest packages then probably not. Something like Fedora would be much more aligned to your needs.

No accessibility options for Alpha 2 release... I'll wait for a beta release only if System76 includes full-screen magnifier. I have a visual disability.

It works the same as Nautilus now on that front, since it's using the same GVFS libraries underneath.

Did I miss Mouse Wheel Scroll lines? I hate it in all Linux desktops, It's either too fast or too slow to scroll with the mouse wheel, and KDE Plasma have no easy way to adjust it. Haven't used Gnome for a while, and this is a Gnome fork? Kinda stupid and awkward that we still don't have an easy way to just fix such a simple thing... I'm talking for the desktop, not browsers/software where it is easily fixed, at least for browsers.

It's an Alpha. It's a work in progress right now. Stick to 22.04 and you should be fine
