Music Is Life That's what I was thinking too, when I saw this Sam dude from a distance in this video, I was thinking "when and why did Chris Evans start making awful country music?" He's got more talent, and charisma than that. I also thought, just now, that maybe he's an evil version of Chris Evans, from an alternate universe, where instead of playing one of the best superheroes ever, he decided to become a shitty country artist and further drag down the probably once good name of country music and forsake his career for an awful song about trying to fuck a back road. Either way, it's an awful song.

What continually amazes me about bro-country is the things that they choose as cultural signifiers and how they're not even *remotely* unique to rural America. Roads with curves, dirt roads, blue jeans (optionally ripped) t-shirts, pick-up trucks, bonfires, red solo cups, beer on a Friday .... uh yeah. Urban and suburban America has/does all that stuff. Also, _for the love of god_, "Southside" doesn't mean the American South.
@CJWproductions7 жыл бұрын
That's why it's popular. Why cut off prospective fans by getting too specific?
@anthrax13287 жыл бұрын
It's because none of them really grew up in rural america, they grew up in some moderately sized city/suburban area, and are just picking random stereotypes of stereotypes to sing about, because that's all they know.
@browncoat6977 жыл бұрын
See, now that would be interesting. Could even be successful. Imagine a country artist who basically was the Kendrick Lamar of country: speaking honestly and frankly about the problems that rural (and even suburban) white communities currently face. Shit like the opiate epidemic, jobs leaving for the cities leaving broken, abandoned towns and factories, endemic racism, etc. I'd at least give that a listen.
@caveman123ization7 жыл бұрын
Rip Steakface: You might enjoy "Big Day in a Small Town" by Brandy Clark. The songwriting of the album is based off of the problems and triumphs that take place in a typical American small town. I know recommendations don't often work out, but I figured I'd mention it if you're interested. Not surprisingly, the album is too intelligent/complex for modern country radio, but there are a lot of good alternative/indie/non-radio country artists making great music. (Jason Isbell, Lydia Loveless, Lori McKenna, etc)
@seigeengine7 жыл бұрын
While I vaguely agree... Back roads are often far more curvy. Big roads are often scarily straight. I went through a couple hundred miles of road carved through enormous rock hills recently. Dirt roads are uncommon in suburban areas, and don't exist in urban ones. Blue jeans are absolutely more of a rural than an urban thing. Pick up trucks are pretty rare in cities, unless someone travels out or works certain jobs, whereas they are nigh omnipresent in rural areas. Bonfires don't really happen in suburban or urban areas.

I feel you. As someone from Small Farm Town America, I'm here to confirm that, yeah, a lot of the culture is genuinely like this. I know it sounds like a parody but MANY girls and women out here would be thrilled with this comparison. It plays into this ideal "down-to-earth, working class, easy going, not-like-OTHER-girls" image of a woman that's been elevated to almost saint-like status in the last few decades. To their ears, this is an intimate confession: "I know you as well as I know my favorite part of this sweet little hometown we both love." Cue the panty drop. And I think that's a huge part of why bro country feels kinda off to me: all these songs reel off every down-home cliché in the book (and I can't fault anyone for loving songs that name-check things they value, that's not my point), but the artists are all middle-to-upper class people who are often far-removed from the Identity Nostalgia they sell. It's jarring to hear this "I'm just like you" stuff pushed by rich performers who view Country(tm) as a party theme.

Kind of insulting that this is the most popular (probably the ONLY popular) country hit song right now.

RGS It's not just country. Every genre seems to be promoting only its stupidest and laziest garbage lately. There are plenty of good songs that are barely making a dent on the Billboard charts, but the Chainsmokers are still releasing the same song over and over under different names, Rae Sremmurd and Li'l Uzi Vert are still being permitted to have careers, Linkin Park is now collaborating with a woman who stitches her song lyrics together in post-production, and Ed Sheeran's genuinely good single is being pushed aside by his lame attempt at a sex jam.

Andrew Del Pilar Well actually, Castle on the Hill might be making a comeback. However, Shape of You is the one that's being given all the airplay, and that's just a waste.

it's weird bc country music was about real country men and women singing about there lives and what they went through as kids to now(like rap music) and now it's people who never lived outside a city or done any farm work at all just singing to pander to country people(like how rap artist now are middle class to rich people who never shot a gun or lived in the streets just saying expensive things)

I have to confess I like bro country, I hadn't noticed the objectivacation of women in the lyrics, probably because half the time instead of listening I was busy staring at the bro's back end and crotchular regions.

I honestly can't believe that bro country is still kinda lingering around. "I'm just a good Ole sterotypical southern accent bell bottom country dude that sings constantly about trucks and women and dirt roads and beer although I'm not really country and grew up in a city". Personally, I'm not 90s. However, listening to the 90's and the 00's country, say what you want about those 2 decades, but if you really look back and compare it to now, just look at the more diversity that went in. And say what you want about Rap or Pop today, but at least those are genres that can really capture the modern trends and something that sounds acceptable and more in diversity. Country Music to me just dosen't work as a genre that's supposed to capture just whatever the latest fad is (especially not in 2017), good country music is supposed to be a genre that expresses itself and keeps itself timeless. I can already see us looking back at this decade 20 year's from now cringing about Bro Country. I don't have a problem with bro country persay, it's the singers and the people that sold out. There are artists who try in but look at the many in this decade that have sold out. Blake Shelton, Deirks Bentley, Keith Urban, Toby Keith, Kenney Chesney, Tim McGraw, heck even Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan sold out. Then again, the 2010's have hits, but a lot of it I agree is in a spree of random mess. The point above all is that this song is just a big mess of nothingness. It's dull, boring, uninspired, and comparing a woman's body to a backroad is more offemsive then people realize. Say that to the wrong person and you better hope to god you don't get smacked right across the face. This is one of the worst country song's I've ever heard and It's easily one of the worst song's this year. I have no doubt that this will be a contender on your worst list this year.

Im revisiting old Todd vids and something i find amusing about the back road analogy is that from my experience as a southerner, no body really loves taking them. We just do it when we have to outside of scenarios like mud bogging and stuff

Possible meanings of the lyric Body Like a Back Road: - Full of holes...I mean, she has a few you can use, but otherwise....what? - Full of shit...that's certainly not a compliment or romantic - Overgrown...if she's from the 70's, sure - Not used by anybody...a nice way of saying she's not a slut? - There's a better route...he's cheating on her

Her body is like a back road: it’s swampy, unkempt, the rear is covered in something that looks like mud, and everybody I know has been on it at some point. Wow what a compliment

I lime this. Todd is a good music critic and makes good videos. So if the pop charts aren't giving him good material and the top 40 stations aren't playing the top 40 (which, what?) going into more specialized charts is a solid call.
@searchingformyself53196 жыл бұрын
What's your point? THIS song is way high on the pop charts, is played on the top 40 stations. This is not going into a "more specialized chart".
