The saddest thing about Adam Levine is that his voice would probably be pretty impressive if he actually... DID anything with it. In all of his songs, he sings like a person who can’t actually sing. No runs, just talky-falsetto in chopped sentences. If the guy just released a single where he actually holds a note and has interesting lyrics, maybe even work a ballad or something equivalent, he could probably do it great. He just... doesn’t. There’s just no passion, no energy, it’s empty white noise. He’s the poster child for automated pop music. It’s like all of his work has been created by an algorithm and then produced through a filter.

if you want to see him DO something with it look up... like Songs About Jane or anything from Kara's Flowers. There is more fucking integrity and creativity... and just QUALITY in "Soap Disco" than everything they've released since "moves like jagger" combined. it's fucking night and day, he's gone the entire spectrum from completely undeservedly ignored and underrated to monstrously overhyped and overrated shit.

I think it's also important to bring up that one of the most successful metal bands of the last few years is Babymetal. A Japanese metal band that mixes in j-pop elements. This seems interesting to me because they spear more accessible to the k-pop crowd. Many of my friends are into k-pop and when I play a song like Starlight they can get behind it. It's such a shame. Their first album (Songs About Jane) actually showed some potential. I was playing some songs off of it a few weeks ago, and a younger coworker of mine came in, heard what was playing (I think it was Sunday Morning or The Sun), and asked "who is this?" "Maroon 5", I replied. He gave a sarcastic laugh and asked, "but seriously, who is this?" When I showed him that is was, indeed, Maroon 5, and explained that it was from their first album, he was absolutely stunned and almost shouted "THIS is Maroon 5?! What the hell happened to them?!" Anyone who hasn't heard some of the songs from their first album, I would say check them out. Yes, some are clear indications of the garbage that they would produce from then on out up until this very day, and the better ones actually make the shit generator that they became even more tragic, but there are some, in my opinion, pretty decent songs, and even one or two damn good ones, especially among those not released as singles at the time.

Even the singles off the album - which I disliked at the time - seem like masterpieces in retrospect when you know where Maroon 5 were ultimately going to end up. I’m not going to say it’s a waste of potential - with Levine as lead vocalist I don’t think they were ever going to be brilliant. That being said they did not have to be what they are now, which is in my opinion, one of the worst and most annoying bands to ever make it big.

There are certain songs by Maroon 5 that I actually enjoy outside Songs About Jane, like "Wake Up Call", "Makes Me Wonder", and even some of the more recent stuff like "Sugar" and "Moves Like Jagger". This song contains none of the stuff I like about those songs. Hell, I listened to a mashup of "Girls Like You" and a song from Cardcaptor Sakura that sounded more like a Maroon 5 song than the actual song.

But like....these songs lately feel just so uninspired and bland. And they're worse because they have the guy's voice in them. Girls Like You wouldn't make me so sad if it was sung by some guy I didn't recognize. But instead it's a voice I grew up associating with fun, upbeat songs. And now he's just...here, making garbage. It follows the trend of modern music just being shit for people to listen to when they're high. Modern Post Malone style hip hop is the same way, mellow and mumbly and easy to digest. No lie, I actually heard this song play on a public radio at a store a few days ago, and I suddenly felt really sad and wanted to cry. Was it because the song was beautiful, or emotional, or really spoke to me in some kind of deep or meaningful way? Not on your life. It was because something suddenly clicked in my mind..... I had sort of a subconscious epiphany that this is what music is now. This depressing, bland, sterilized load of complete and utter nothing that was coming out of the speakers and wafting through the air in a public place where people go to buy things. .........and I was participating in it just by being there and hearing it. There I was, in the middle of the store, and no joke... this song, before I even knew what I was feeling, triggered that "What is my life??" part of my brain and I was suddenly having to hold back tears. It wasn't just a reminder that this is a very soulless, depressing time in the country right now, this is just a very soulless, depressing recent culture, and I suddenly had this mini-revelation, smack dab in the middle of a Best Buy, hearing "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 playing on the radio while looking at the same "New Releases" as last month in the Blu-Ray section, that we've reached the point where the "human music" from Rick and Morty is real, with no irony or satire in the situation to be found.

I feel like calling Adam Levine a virtual singer at this point in his career is vaguely insulting to _actual virtual singers._ They might just be a syllable library strapped to a really fancy MIDI program, but a vocaloid can at least put some sense of artificial emotion into belting out a hook. The whole objective there is to *not* sound like a lifeless machine.

The stealth douches of the 70s used a lot of (no joke) James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, and Carole King in order to appear sensitive & sweet to my mom. The stealth douches of "my day" were all about (again, no joke) Lisa Loeb, Mariah Carey, and Boyz II Men's smooth R&B stuff. Laurie Ann Which is funny, because in “my day” (being 2004; I’m 22) Maroon 5 easily could fall under that...and I think it worked way better. There was one song from them that I thought was a nice song about cheering up a girl that only last WEEK did I realize it was about him manipulating a woman who’s barely an adult and emotionally unstable to have sex with him... This is nothing. If a man sings this to me I’m gonna think he’s the most uninteresting human on the planet.

@@metademetra - Yeah, there are so many Maroon 5 songs with that shady, manipulative subtext. Mayer & Levine both had/have a knack for writing songs that initially sound like they're just forlorn poets trying to find love in this painful old world. Then, after listening a few times, the hairs on the back of my neck stand up & I need a friggin' decontamination shower when I realize how manipulative & skeevy the lyrics actually are. Reminds me of "More Than Words" by Extreme in the 90s. That song is such guilt-trip horse shit, but I didn't realize for years. That was one of those go-to songs the d-bags would sing to potential conquests at bowling alley lounge karaoke. Ugh. Pretty late, Chicago didnt exactly sellout in a traditional sense. They just let Peter Cetera write music. Their first album (their best album) had zero no songs written by Cetera, and their second album had one Cetera song and it was bad and a super easy listening song. Robert Lamm wrote most of Chicago's best songs but eventually ran out of ideas. Terry Kath (performer of Hendrix's favorite guitar solo) was just happy to support the band in anyway. When Cetera's song started being hits the label kept pushing for him to be the main frontman (a position he formally shared with Kath and Lamm) and well, the rest is history. Kath's death cemented Chicago's direction.

Maroon 5's dominance and the demise of pop music makes me miss Taylor Swift. Not reputation-era Taylor Swift, but the real Taylor Swift we got until 2015. At least Nickelback has songs with actual meaning behind them. "Gotta be Somebody" says that even though you feel alone at the moment, there's somebody out there who's like you and will love you. "If Everyone Cared" says that we all swallowed our pride and cared for one another, the world would be a better place. "Feed the Machine" talks about how we're controlled by people in power and that we're manipulated by swallowing their lies. "Edge of Revolution" says that we should stand up and rebel against a government or force that's trying to control us. "When we Stand Together" says that we can build a better world if we work together. And even the songs that aren't very meaningful can still rock hard. I think Nickelback gets WAY TOO much hate! Especially since there exist hundreds of other bands and musicians that are far worse than they are. Maroon 5 being one of them.
