Todd's back from vacation, and warming up on an innocuous but weirdly persistent sad-rap song. Death Bed: The Song That Eats

I mean, traditionally putting a sample's credit in the title is optional; look at previous Todd entry "Whatcha Say" by Jason DeRulo for instance. But then, that was released on an actual album with printed liner notes. Not on a website where they only give you a space to enter the title.

Before this video i didn't realise there was a tik tok trend with this as a sample. When I saw the video title i was confused, because I know the song as just 'coffee' by beabadoobee. Now there was a whole other artist, did beabadoobee make a song about coffe again and feature in it? But no, same song. Funny how todd didn't know her and classified her as 'ukelele girl' just like the rest of tiktok probably did. I guess I listen to her music so much that I forget it's not that well known or something. When you hear something everywhere, you just assume people know it, but then again I didn't even know powfu and just assumed it was the coffee song.

I heard that MAYBE Sit Next to Me from their third album got a bit of exposure, but I certainly didn't really hear it on the radio. This has been a thing for years. Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life," a song about some drug addict trying not to die of a heroin overdose, was the official song of Carnival Cruise Lines for years. I've seen chocolate commercials use Modern English's "I Melt With You," a song about dying in a nuclear explosion with the melting referring to people's flesh. You know, melting flesh is exactly the image I want to associate with chocolate. If it sounds pleasant and has a catchy chorus, ad executives will use it, regardless of how messed up the lyrics are.

I actually interpreted the hook of the song differently, as in his girlfriend trying to hold on to him by "making another cup of coffee for his head" as he opens with not wanting to go to sleep, aka pass away. She wants to hold on the idea that everything will be OK and she's still in denial and his lyrics are basically him comforting her to deal with his loss before he actually is gone. I don't think the 01:03 is that weird. I can remember when I was with my GF in my teens I wanted to go away as late as humanly possible, and I would literally time it to the minute. Because nobody travels from a to b in discrete increments of 15 minutes and 01:03 just happened to be the time for him. For this specific song, the dreary monotone raps kinda work for me. It's just like you said ironically: he sounds like he's about to die. And that works beautifully in the context of this song. If this is his plateau in rapping then I wholeheartedly agree that he will never be big, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work in the song. This dude just bumped into a happy accident, and I think he can have it. It's a beautiful song that just sticks and if I look at the person himself, I don't see him claiming to be any kind of big famous rapper. Just a kid doing what he likes so personally I'm glad for him.

The sound this song for it is perfect in my opinion. It feels like he’s just talking and trying to downplay what he’s losing and is just talking about happy memories so that he doesn’t have to face the fact this is his last moment. His girlfriend is in the denial stage of grief and he’s trying to comfort her the best he can. Letting her make him coffee even though that won’t fix him.

Technically Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is too. Face Down went to #24 and nothing else went in the Top 40. There's a bunch of mid-2000s pop punk/emo bands that were overshadowed by My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Paramore, Panic!, and All American Rejects.

Big takeaway for everybody: LISTEN TO BEABADOOBEE Her music is very good, she's a great writer and her album Loveworm (bedroom sessions) is fantastic. Her new singles are also very good, and her new album comes out next month. Shes a very exciting artist to follow right now. Completely recommend. She's playing with a lot of contemporary indie stuff , but her newest singles are a lot more like mid-late 90s female-fronted alt-rock. Very worth the listen

When in was in a creative writing class in college I wrote a poem that had pretty much the EXACT same flow as this and was also a simple cutesy story (although it was a happy poem about hanging out with my best friend.) I just want to mention this here because the original thread of comments died regarding comparing Circles and Roses: The Roses song from 2016 and its remix from 2019 can and should be treated as two separate songs. The point in some ways is that this is the TikTok effect: Roses remix is a perfect example of a song that became popular because of a catchy beat that is very interesting within the 30 second timespan of a tiktok video, but lacks substance when extended through its entire duration. Go check out the comments section of the remix of the song and you’ll see a lot of people mentioning they don’t understand the lyrics. I’m not arguing that the original song didn’t have interesting lyrics, but the reason people were attracted to the remix has nothing to do with the lyrics of the original or its substance in any form. So I think it’s a bit contrived to treat Roses as a song that’s been charting since 2016, just like you wouldn’t claim the terrible Black Eyed Peas song RITMO is technically the same as Corona’s Rhythm of the Night

Singing with the right emotional tone would have helped the song. Reminds me of when Johnny Cash did a cover of NIN's "Hurt", the NIN's version is good, but Cash's version is an emotional sledge hammer and the video is a gut punch of feelings.
@MelMelodyWerner
@MelMelodyWerner 3 жыл бұрын
I still don't understand why people always want to compare the two versions of Hurt. Cash may have covered it, but he turned it into a completely different song because it was him singing it and he changed a lyric to reflect his persona ("I wear this crown of shit" -> "I wear this crown of thorns"). NIN's Hurt is also an album closer, whereas Johnny's functions well as a single. they're both perfect in their own ways. NIN's is topping off one of the best metal concept albums of the 90's, with the narrator of the album killing himself, and the bullet being represented by the crushing wall of noise at the end. it's a harrowing listen that grapples with themes of suicidal ideation, and is just as much an emotional cut as Johnny's take. Johnny's is like David Bowie's Blackstar in that you have this living legend staring death in the face, but for Cash, he's lived a life so long that all of the people he loved have died. that lyrical alteration recontextualizes the song; instead of it being about a narrator who feels worthless, it's deepening Cash's status at the time as a musical god. no need to knock NIN's to elevate Cash's; they're apples to oranges.

I've known the song Coffee for a couple years now because it was one of the songs featured on this free lofi music app that had a library of like 25 songs that could be played offline, so that was what I listened to any time I needed music but was away from wifi. Was fuckin stunned the first time I heard death bed because at first I thought this song I knew had magically become popular and then the rapping started and that threw me for a whole different loop.

Re-upload of my original comment: I knew he was going to mention the Dido sample from “Stan”. To think this is the Eminem of this generation which... is the definition of a back-handed compliment because Eminem is still releasing music.

I actually thought Em's new album this year was really good. There are a few duds but the album has plenty of great songs with a classic Slim Shady feel to them.

I still feel like this song's clunkiness is it's charm. There's something about it that just feels really genuine, especially compared to the polish on so many other pop songs. Like yeah, his flow is basic and his lyrics are uninspired, but it fits the mood of someone laying delirious in their bed just trying to put their thoughts together. It's not dramatic or profound, but it conveys this raw feeling of bittersweet melancholy that it's difficult to find these days.

Yeah that comment of Todd surprised me. I can understand ERB being considered the whitest thing ever, but lamest? They manage to grasp complex historical events in a modern art form, their flow is decent and their lyrics are actually really good. Honestly I prefer that way over the basic “ I am rich look at me” rap or Drake’s whiny “sad boi but still hot” rap.
