The guitar world is way too snobby. I think it takes courage for a singer to attempt to play guitar and sing in front of a huge crowd. Elvis wasn't a guitar player, he used it as a comfort thing. Good for him for strapping up, at whatever level his playing was at.
@SWarren9584 жыл бұрын
Elvis always played the humble country boy act when the subject of his guitar playing was brought up, but in fact Elvis could play. Carl Perkins said that Elvis was a good rhythm guitar player. You also have to remember that when Elvis started out his group consisted of Scotty Moore (Lead Guitar), Bill Black (Stand Up Bass) and Himself Elvis (Rhythm Guitar). That's it. There is no place to hide when your a member of a 3 piece band. They toured for about a year to a year and a half doing one night stands before Elvis started making movies and being drafted into the Army. If you want to see and hear Elvis play guitar pull up the in the round section of the 68 Comeback Special. He's not Eric Clapton by any stretch, but he is solid. My bet is that he was a better guitar player than what he shows in the 68 Special but there was no way he was going to take any chances performing in front of a nationally televised audience.

@@rumpledxkn Well obviously however the problem comes when people treat all music as the same thing and expects everyone to be heavy metal speed shredding and has no respect for any other type or genre. This is a huge issue with mostly the heavy metal community. Also this has to do with guitar playing, not music in general. Yes bands compete all the time however they don't compete with "who can play the fastest", they compete on who can get the most unique sound that stands out. In fact most people would consider jimi hendrix as the best guitarist but hes not even that great when it comes to actual speed.

@xjunkxyrdxdog895 жыл бұрын
I felt like that for a long time. I could play riffs, but hadn't really learned any full songs. I learned chords, but only read tabs, and didnt know the fretboard. It was the way I was learning. I would look up the tabs for songs I wanted to learn, or watch a video if I couldnt figure out how to play it from tabs alone. I realized I was learning mimicry and didnt actually understand the guitar. I went back to the basics, and forced myself to learn scales, unusual chords, and basic music theory. It took a long time but I started to learn and understand the fretboard. Instead of just copying songs, I started to understand them and why they "work". Also, you have to make sure that you actually practice. Even the boring stuff. If your "practice" consists of running through a compilation of assorted riffs, you're not really practicing. 20 minutes of focused practice is better than an hour of blind noodling. Finally, reach outside of your comfort zone. Physically and musically. Play things that hurt your hands.(every breath you take- the police) Play things that hurt your ears. ;) That's the fastest way to improve. Good luck, and happy playing.

@gh877164 жыл бұрын
@@xjunkxyrdxdog89 I think it depends on what you play. You can learn an extreme amount by just studying the transposed tabs for a classical music peace. If you're observant and learn multiple classical songs, you'll begin to develop an understanding of scale patterns, keys without even having any prior knowledge of them. There's also a lot of technical metal songs that one can learn a great deal from just by practicing and playing along to them. Of course, learning music theory is advisable as well. But I believe playing along to the songs one likes properly is more crucial to one's progression; theory will make it just simpler, and it also helps one write one's own songs faster. It's true, though, what you say. The average pop or rock song is very simplistic and so can't offer much in the way of improvement just by playing them over and over again. But there's better music out there. This is just my take, of course.

When I was just turning 10......(43 years ago) a Brazilian man lived down my street and would sit on his sisters porch and play a nylon string guitar that looked like it fell off a hundred trucks....I just would sit on the sidewalk and watch n listen... eventually we struck up a friendship and I became to kno that he was very ill and not doing so well....I mowed his lawn , shoveled his snow and raked leaves just to get a few lessons and also he taught me to play Chess (which came in handy later when I won a few tournaments that afforded me the opportunity to buy an amp and another electric guitar in my late teens)........I was mesmerized by the sound n beauty of an acoustic guitar that I begged n begged for my own but times were rough and my parents had 3 boys who were costly just in clothes n shoes and my own father had heart disease and soon would pass ....... ....they couldn't afford much - let alone a guitar for a 11-12 yearold ....(my daughter is now 11 and has 5 guitars and plays them all incredibly!! ...but piano is definitely her thing in her young life - she even gives lessons at her school!...).............I learned a lot in a short period of time from this kind neighbor and when he passed away I was devastated cuz I considered this 70yrold man to be my friend besides a mentor. His sister sold the house and quickly moved away because she was than all alone in her life , no guitar playing on the porch to fill the air ...she wrote a letter and gave the letter and the beaten down old acoustic to my father to give to me. It was the greatest gift EVER!!!....the letter was heartfelt and that the man and his sister looked forward to me coming by all the time just to hang out and play chess or guitar................my brother had a party without my parents knowledge and his friends broke my guitar to pieces and than hid it from me........when I found it a pc of my heart was ripped away and never was to be replaced...I smashed my brothers hands with a ballpeen hammer , he as 7 years older than me and still to this day he is frightened of me and I still hate him for the damage he caused in my life and memories- he's human garbage!!!!................fast forward....I'm 16-20 and play in a hardcore punk band and a thrash band with couple guitars n amps at my disposal and actually made a run at trying to be famous but it didn't work itself out.....now decades later I teach neighborhood kids guitar for free , I own 33 guitars and a large assortment of Amps n pedals ....I build guitars as a hobby ( I am retired from a severe work related accident in 2006) ....I have given 17 guitars away to my son and daughters friends over the years and I promised myself I would reach 25 soon..........I gave a sweet vintage tele to my special Dr who is my pain specialist(I suffer with a high amount of daily pain and discomfort) this to be given to his son who will be born this holiday season and the feeling it gave overwhelmed me and reminded me of the long summer days n nights here in Chicago playing guitar on my own porch...........at 15 I had torn my knee to shreds skateboarding and was on crutches all summer so I woodshedded for months upon months and played guitar 10-12 hours per day!!!.....it made me the player I am today , along with the kindness of an elderly gentleman , I have never put the guitar down in nearly four and half decades!!!........... music is the artwork of the soul.....play ANYTHING !!!!......teach and learn guitar or piano or ?????..........make music more than just a way to kill time ......make it your lifes identity!!!!.......and try your best - stay in tune - push yourself!!!!!........the rewards surpass the efforts ten fold!!!!........... Mary- push yourself harder !!!!.......your talent is a gift and iv seen and heard a lifetime of players n artists .......you stand well above many of them but your so entrapped in duplicating another artists creations and compositions that it diminishes the ability you have to write and record for yourself.........Time is so so fleeting and prescious!!!!!!.......use it wisely before one day its gone .......when I give my 25th guitar away to a young lady or young man - I will think only of Mr Juarez and the prescious moments in his life that he took to teach and mentor me, all while he was very ill ................... without him , I would never love the guitar and music the way I do each and every day!!........peace to all!!!! - best of luck-love and grand health to you and all your loved ones!!!!........pick up a guitar today!!!!.....

I want Fender to re-release the Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar as the Taylor Swift Signature Jaguar. The video of her playing "Wildest Dreams" with just her Jaguar at the Grammy Museum is everything that made me originally fall in love with Taylor Swift in the first place. I'm so glad you included a clip of it, because it's just perfection. If I'm being perfectly honest, as someone who grew up with a guitarist father but played keyboards until about age 20, it was musicians like Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donnelly of Throwing Muses, Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson of Lush, Bilinda Butcher of My Bloody Valentine, Meriel Barham of Pale Saints, and Rachel Goswell of Slowdive who gave me the final push to switch from keyboards to guitar in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Around 1993, I ended up switching to bass, and served as the vocalist/bassist in my band from then until 2009, when I finally moved on. So yes, I can tell you that singing and playing bass simultaneously is monstrously difficult.

Love your videos and your perspective, Mary! I think part of the issue here is how we define things. First, we have pop stars who "rise" as musicians from the get-go, like John Mayer, or Prince, or Bobbie Gentry, or Ed Sheeran are people who found music important enough to study, and learn, and devote themselves to BEFORE they made it big because it was important and meaningful to them. They didn't know at the time of their learning exactly where it might take them, but they did it because they loved the music. The second type are people who become pop stars generally as singers and NOT musicians. It is when these people - after they have become big names, and mega wealthy, and super-celebrities benefitting from sitting on the the musical talent "shoulders" of others (not to disparage the talent required to sing in a way that makes an emotional, expressive connection with an audience either though because that is definitely a highly-honed art as well) - suddenly decide, "You know what, I can do that too..." and then presume to amaze huge audiences with their grand instrumental skill - but can actually only perform at the level of a third grade PTA recital. It smacks as disrespectful of the talent, skill, discipline, devotion , and most often many years of practice that instrumental musicians put in to attain their professional level skill set. That's why it is perceived as offensive to many people. But that said, I think the WAY the singer makes the attempt can also play a big part in how it is received. If it is done with an air of "step aside, I'm the big name, I can do it better" Um, no. But if it is done in a spirit of sharing of music , with at least some measure of deference, respect and appreciation of the actual musicians they are working with - I could actually see something like that going over pretty well. Great topic for a video! Thanks for really making me think about why my instincts hit as hard as they did as I watched this. And thanks for the work that you do, for being super "real" and for sharing your talents with all of us. :D

I think that as long as they inspire someone to pick up the guitar, I'm all for it. The guitar community is full of jerks and bullies on all levels. --You have the internet trolls who swear they are better than everyone else and go on peoples pages and say "your tone sucks" or "you suck" etc..... How do you know that your mean comments didn't just uninspire maybe the next great artists and now the world may never know there music or worse, it was someone who just was hoping to share some of their progress because they don't get support from their immediate family? Also, tone is subjective to what you are into. Not everyone is into the same style or kind of music and sounds. That's what makes music so great. I listen to a lot of genres because of the great players, I may not like all their music but I can appreciate their technique, I.e. I never got into jazz guitar but I love watching Joe Pass play. Ed O'brien may not be a technical master compared to some but that dude is a sonic terror machine that has created music that continues to inspire. --The other thing is when a professional musician replies, you aren't a true musician because you don't gig regularly or have never gigged....I recently saw a person considered a living legend say this. It bothered me because maybe he doesn't realize not everyone has had the same opportunity, or had to give up because of other responsibilities. Also, I thought that a lot of his revenue comes from people that follow him just because he is good and they aspire to be that but never will. It's a 2 way street, professionals count on the hardcore guitar fans for income and the fans just want to watch and be inspired in their homes or around friends. Both sides need to just have some respect. --Lastly, in my small rant, I hate the who's better argument.....When did the guitar or music in general become a competition? Again, the best to you is because that person INSPIRES YOU the most...What inspires you is what is important

He's passively tried to get me into music and I'm very thankful he did because music is powerful and I honestly believe that without music humans wouldn't be human. My grandfather gave me a cheap but decent guitar to see if I was even interested. Then after he saw I was in it for the long haul he gave me a beautiful 1992 Fender Telecaster that I love dearly. I'm still a newer guitarist and don't know many songs but somehow I know a hefty amount of theory and can improvise relatively well.

wurstgitarre What do I want? An answer to my question, basically...which you covered already. Bass is an easy instrument, especially a 4 string...and it's an easy instrument to play while singing, that's all. Tuba...now *thats* an instrument that's tough to play while singing.

@@AZ-kr6ff Yeah okay, if you play it like say Sid Vicious it might be easy. ;) What I meant was as a bass player you have to keep it together because along with the drums it's the rhythmic foundation. And I think that's pretty hard, when you have to sing as well. Drums and vocals at the same time, that's even tougher, I guess.

among the guitar players , I've noticed a snobbery against electronic music in general, as a guitar player I've always embraced electronic music, it can get a bit frustrating taking the grief from the guitar community when it comes to that

i think a mix of electronic and guitar can produce outstanding results, why not have the best of both worlds, synth can really compliment a good solo

John Mayer and his performance of ain't no sunshine inspired me to pick up guitar again. Now I wish I would've more belief in learning guitar earlier. During pandemic I made incredible progress on guitar. It's such a great instrument. I guess it's never too late to work on your dreams.

I hope Joni Mitchell is on your radar too, I always forget what an amazingly technical musician she is-- those chord progressions!
