What's the difference between all these different labels for experimental pop? Why does everyone call everything "hyperpop?" Where do all these terms come from? All these questions answered and more... hopefully

Woo! ok ya'll, my longest video by a mile. I really put a lot of work into this, but its my first time making a sort of video essay type video so, I'm sorry if its not really that great. I try to fit a few jokes in there as much as possible. Please let me know what you think. If you watched the whole video, I love you so much :). Ok bye!

Escape Room from what I know isn't a real genre. It's a clusterfuck of music that apparently spotify's algorithm created because it found a pattern of music people listen to. This does not mean it's an actual musical genre though, but rather a computer generated category for people's music preferences. A good example of this ^ is how Lizzo, SALEM, Pussy Riot, Little Simz, etc.. Don't have a lot of common with eachother but all of them are a part of escape room.

nah, it's real music. it's a little hazy, but usually you can tell who is actually escape room music or who is just spotify's attempt at comparing music.

@@belltoadfearless6747 a data engineer at Spotify literally said in an interview that Escape Room was a 'genre' he made up as an attempt to solidify listening patterns in certain people into a single genre. "Escape Room" wasn't a term anybody used to describe any kind of music until it showed up in peoples Wrapped lists telling them it was their favorite genre

good vid, glad you made it. i feel like "escape room's" new existence and significance is something particularly indicative of the state of music rn; you mentioned hyperpop was popularized thru spotify's playlist, and now we're starting to use a term created for the algorithm by spotify that has no previous existence in any sort of music criticism / genre IDs. most people, myself included, found out about the "genre" when they did their Year in Review thing. the creator's idea behind the term feels vague and transparent, like me when i name my spotify playlist "Highway Drugs" or something

Sophie actually is one of the pioneers of bubblegum bass - if you listen to the Product compilation, that is peak bubblegum bass (msmsmsm & l.o.v.e. may be the only exceptions). Then also some tracks from Oil of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides are also bubblegum bass, like Immaterial

Motown is a genre and a label. The genre is named for the label, even though the label is based on Detriot's nickname as the motor city.

Sophie is PC music and Hyperpop and Bubblegum bass... but she also did stuff which was NOT bubblegum (tended towards deconstructed or former uk bass). She was so great at it :’(

Try the lists at Rateyourmusic. You can work on the time scale which is very important on any genre scope analysis. Just trying to help your methodology which is a little inconsistent. You are missing a lot of labels that pioneered this stuff for what I hear... you need that time scale and exercise influences, commonalities and borrows.

Pc Music = an internet label of the early 2010’s where AG Cook started it all. Bubblegum bass = a spin-off or sub genre of edm trap and future bass. Big Japanese blog with free eps from the late blog era... many many to listen. This genre developed very fast and gained a ton of attention due to the EDM coverage it got. So there is very little outside the full mainstream or deep underground. Hyperpop: a style of pop music of the mid to late 2010’s with a heavy influence from electronic music production and a big quality of “bedroom” production. It also uses a lot in arrangements and has some special features on the vocal production. I honestly don’t know where the term was coined but this is the deepest of all the categories as hyperpop (like any other pop genre) borrows from its predecessors and contemporaries, but just to be clear pop artists and producers influence and work together so rather than an island hyperpop sits between many things of its time. Escape room: a joke. Nothing else

I think its Art-[fill in the blank w/ traditional genre or genre thats more established] (kind of like Art- Pop) because the most frequent characteristic of music under the "escape room" title is simply genre-bending/ blending, pushing boundaries, or has a sort of avant-garde essence to it. It seems to me that Spotify is categorizing this music based more on a cultural movement rather than a musical genre because its listeners have eclectic taste and belong to a larger (but harder to pinpoint) group of outsiders/ underground art-scene kids around the world & online. Also Soundcloud has A LOT to do with the development of this cultural "phenomena". The democratization of distribution has had a butterfly effect; introducing the world to an infinite number of micro-genres. The most left-field sound today could influence the next mainstream hit tomorrow.

@@hahayes2345 honestly try the lists and charts at rateyourmusic. I know a bunch of hiphopheads use it and even Fontano and Resident Advisor consulta this database. It just got better with the ordering by date on the charts and what’s new brother! Appreciate the video and openness in opinions. Using the time scale makes the whole difference even by a one year difference, this is specially important on shoegaze and emo or crust and hardcore ... so much there brother! I wish you a safe trip on your musical adventure =D
