I have a legal question. Are pop-up mechanisms subject to copyright protection? Many of them (like various types of folds, basic boxes) are simple and it is obvious that they cannot be anyone's intellectual property. What about quite original constructions, like this one? Am I allowed do make a commercial project, with my original graphic design, but based on the solution created by someone else?

I'm not aware of any copyright issues. Paper engineers have always been learning from each other - copying, adapting, varying, improving and building on newly devised mechanisms. Mostly it seems the inventors of new mechanisms are happy to show new ideas and explain how they work so that other people can enjoy them and even expand the field even further.
