'Tomtit'.... sounds like I need to change my channel name haha. Anyway... in all seriousness, if you want to grow you need to branch out a little. The RC niche is tiny in the grand scheme of things, and you have 'niched down' even further to racing. You both have the right humour/personalities, you just need to find something a little more generic to throw in the mix that will bring in more viewers. As for Kev, he aims at a young audience (whether that's on purpose, or just how he is), and a lot of his viewers probably don't even have RC Cars. He doesn't serve the RC Community, he uses RC for entertainment for a wider audience. That's the difference he has on most RC Channels. 99% of the people that don't like him are people within the RC Community. I try to balance in the middle... doing stuff that is interesting enough for the RC community, but can also bring new people in. But with everything I do... most of the time I just wing it, give it a try, see if it works. Hence my video library is so varied :) As for the Raffles, when I started doing them, not many people new about it... then everyone jumped on the bandwagon. The upside is I've raised thousands for a charity very close to me, as well as obviously increasing my revenue to allow me to do some bigger more expensive stuff. I try not to ram them down peoples throats, and just let them tick over a lot of the time. It's easy to get greedy on KZbin once you have a big following. Keep doing what you are doing, and try to add some slightly different stuff in to see what works.

I think you guys are the only rc channel that not only shows the vintage racing side of things, but also that it’s a hobby. We get the cars, support them, keep them going, have fun with them. Most channels these days are just onto the next rtr, onto the next rtr, onto the next, break it, forget about it, new this, sponsored cheapo that. It’s good to see guys posting videos the same way they experience rc’s. Very well done presentation and action shots aside, it’s like talking to some mates about their passions

Don't change a things lads. This is one of the most relatable RC channels on KZbin. I think the only other channel that isn't pumping their audience for subscriptions with raffles or give-a ways is Essential RC. And to be honest, I lost some respect for K Talb when he put that F1 into a barrier. Money is money, its made and spent. But totaling one of those cars for views like that, nope.

You guys rock and I love the content and as you can see from the comments below, I'm not alone. Unfortunately and I am sure I will get some flack for this, most have no clue how much time, money and effort goes into making content for KZbin and just how little money you get in return when small. It's all good and well saying keep doing what you are doing, keep it real but that doesn't change the situation that you are in, working basically two jobs as well as trying to spend time with family. Also, that level of commitment and cost is way above what most would class as a fun hobby, especially over a few years and at some point you start coming to the conclusion, can we really carry on like this. Now a large chunk of viewers expect no adverts, no sponsorships, no income-generating aspects like Raffall but when the rubber hits the road, you have to do what you can to keep the studio lights going, even if people complain about it. My channel made £700 last month on KZbin and 20% goes to the tax man. I am currently building a £900 NIB Dyna kit on the show for just one project series of a few videos. How the hell do you think this level of content is possible without Patreons, Raffalls and sponsorships? I would urge viewers of any RC channel to be a little bit more sympathetic to creators when it comes down to trying to make it viable, especially RC channels that cover areas other than RTR. If you love watching Popalong RC videos and watch them consistently, why not give them £2.00 a year? Images what that would do for them if all Popalong subs did that and is it really too much to give for hundreds of RC videos a year? As that doesn't happen, don't complain about how the content is funded. When all is said and done, am I wrong?

Well said Gav 👏 one of the biggest reasons smaller channels also die is due to not being able to sustain such an expense of a running a channel. People have no idea the level of our own money that gets invested. I’m a firm believer in being true to yourself so I get that popalong and other channels don’t want to become “all about the money” but unfortunately those channels don’t last very long. You have to do whatever it takes to make it work. Either that or one day those studio lights will be turned off for good. I was against the raffles for ages then figured I’ll give them a go as KZbin simply doesn’t make enough on its own through ads to justify all the work involved. Done a fair few now and have to say although they didn’t go down well at first people have grown to like them. Just keep your options open fellow creators and keep up the good work ❤

I’ve been into this hobby for over three decades and in this KZbin game for almost six years, grassroots growth is difficult. I subscribe to very few big name channels and there’s only one I still consider watching still and that’s Oval RC, he’s a personal friend and he’s always been extremely supportive of my channel and extremely humble for a guy who has 1,4 million subscribers. You guys are good at what you do, you got a good fan base. There’s no clickbait and no nonsense bs with your work. As someone who watches massive amounts of KZbin rc channels I would make this simple recommendation, cars, cars, and more cars, new cars, old cars, upgraded, stock, etc! I watch Tomlin because he's always got something different and that's the main reason I watch, is to see if I'm interested in purchasing something. I 109% agree about Talbot, his nonstop yelling mixed with the total destruction of everything as well as referring to everything as "cheap" just drives me crazy. I genuinely felt this amusing banter, all I was missing was a pint. I’ve sat late after work as a mechanic to specifically listen to the older techs have talks just like this. 1. Back handed comments 2. Name calling 3. The ol’ “he’s not doing it out of passion” said in multiple different variations 4. And my favorite “I’m not going anywhere” Reality is you blokes complain (at least that’s what this came off as) about society, exposure to a broader audience and what others are doing for it. But reality is you should stop worrying. You are the balance the hobby needs. “Tomtit” his content got me into the hobby at ripe age of 30. And when I was tired of destroying my belongings the talbot way I started to pay attention to you guys for the experience of the good ol days and learn more about racing and actually being a part of the community. All in all chin up fellas it can always be worse. It’s could’ve been your F1 nitro car!😂😂 I’ll be staying in tune for more gripes like this. 🍻 cheers!

I'm on the other side of the world (NZ) and watch, but I think your show is highly tailored to those in the UK as you look for places to race there. I watch as your videos are good for tips on racing and such, but a lot of content is about your local scene and how and where you can race, this is great for those that can go and helps this hobby as it informs and hopefully brings new people to clubs they didn't know about. You provide a service to all that watch, but a much bigger one to those locally. If there were more tubers like you in more countries, the hobby and clubs would probably grow. So, as Tomley says, niche perhaps, but that gains loyalty generally, although not necessarily big numbers. Keep going boys, it may not be your job (yet), but it's an outlet for you and we enjoy it too.

Haha brilliant vid. One of the only ways to make KZbin a fairly well paid side job/full time is to incorporate as many income streams as possible. Your time isn’t free and people are not forced to enter raffles or anything else it’s a personal option. Raffles give people the chance to win something expensive which they might not be able to afford normally whilst also giving back to the channel and helping to support it. They are controversial just like ads on KZbin and I was against them for a long time. They can big money makers (depending on what you are raffling) and that can be used on better equipment, new cars and free giveaways (again giving back) but of course it’s something you have to try and although some subscribers will unsub and claim “you are only in it for the money” the majority will respect the decision to try and generate something extra in the interest of the channel. Just do what’s best for you guys. Personally having multiple income streams from KZbin has helped sustain my channel. I’m even planning on going part time at my day job next year to do it full time. Just don’t miss out on opportunities lads just to try and please People. If people like you which clearly they do as 12k is a good subscriber base then they will support you rather than go against you and if they don’t support you they weren’t right for your channel. Got to be a little ruthless to make that money (if you want a KZbin career) otherwise stay as you are and I love the honesty. In regards to Kev yeah that last vid showed how much of a child he really is. I think that video has made a massive impact and no doubt lots of people unsubbed. Kev is Kev and I doubt he will change it’s how he’s grown his channel with endless destruction and kids love that but it’s incredibly damaging to the hobby in my opinion and a bad look to the young kids getting into the hobby. Enjoy lads and I’m sure no one is offended by any comments in the vid (poor old Rckicks gav got it good haha) Gav is a top bloke!! Just remember it’s your channel your decisions ❤

kevin is a wild man and has influenced a lot of content creators, even here stateside. he does more than RC cars too, boats, planes, drones, monster trucks, how to sell stuff on ebay etc. sometimes i cringe a bit when he destroys an RC, but he also shows us they can almost always be repaired. mostly he just has an energetic and excited attitude about everything he approaches. tomley is more nuanced and detailed with his breakdowns and explanations than kevin, who eschews the techno babble. its good there are so many content creators that offer something for everyone you just need to find something that makes you stand out. maybe mr. beast style giveaways to random people, idk but these days there are so many youtube channels its hard to to stand out, IMO. i even liked and subscribed to your channel, even though this is the first time seeing you guys and i couldnt tell if this was supposed to be tongue in cheek or sour grapes, but it was an interesting perspective and i know i couldnt figure out how to build and run a successful youtube channel, so hats off for giving it a go.

I still have my first Tamiya Fighterbuggy DT-01 from 1998. It was such a pleasure screwing it together... as a kid... Now I'm 37 years old and my little son got infected by the hobby too, so as I did, now he has someone who can show him how it should go. Not buying one RC after another like crazy and throwing them in the corner after a while, no it's important too keep them alive and whatch after them as long as possible, reminders of a funnier and better times, before the internet 😅 This overconsumption is crazy and it has nothing to do with the hobby anymore, it became soulless these days. u guys are on the positive side on the internet! thx guy's

Yeah Kev does what Kev does. I still watch him. I think they broke the mould when they made him. I honestly watch through the different RC channels for the differences they offer. I like the general feeling you guys put into your content, it's friendly, open and all about fun more than anything else. Some of Tomley's crawling vids are like RC ASMR, so I like his work too. I watch Gav to see what ever he is up to, which changes from vid to vid really. Seriously, I'm kind of spoiled for RC content here. Now, I'd be absolutely fine with you guys raffling cars or whatever off on Raffal. Some lucky sod gets a prize, you guys get to make a bit of knicker to help the channel keep going. I'd hazard a guess most of your viewers would be the same. Lastly, yeah, do the only fans thing, or become Insta-hoes. You know, photo's of you two in tasteful yet revealing atire while using your RC's. Titles like, Feeling cute, might run my Hornet later-what do you think? I'm sure there are thousands of repressed Japanese businessmen hungering for that kind of thing.

I like what you guys do. It is fairly unique in the RC YT community. But to get a larger audience will require far more diversity in your content. Which I understand you may not want to do. I'll continue watching either way. In regard to raffles...I have no issue with them. YT (as you know) is hard work. If cheap raffles help creators get paid and no one gets hurt I see no harm. Same with sponsorships. YT is a job and you should get paid for what you do. To denigrate others for simply making a living when your own stated goal is to become FT YT'ers is a bit hypocritical is it not? I wish you much success and hope you one day reach your goals, whatever they may be.

The reason your channel isn't getting much attention is that the content you're producing focuses on Tamiyas and other RC brands, as well as an RC scene that aren't as popular in the US. A significant portion of Kevin's audience is from the US, and he showcases the RC culture in America. While Tamiya is a known brand in the US, it's not as prominent, and the new generation of hobbyists doesn't pay much attention to it. To be fair, you both are amazing, and I believe you have better cinematography than other RC KZbinrs. I'm not sure what the secret is to attracting more subscribers, but you should consider covering the RC culture overseas, not just in America, and produce material about it. Good luck, and I wish you all the best.

My personal view is that there is enough room on KZbin for all kinds of RC channel. Kev's is predominantly an entertainment channel within the context of RC. He is trying to appeal to a wider audience than just RC specific fans. He clearly knew that his last video would be controversial as he even said "feel free to unsubscribe". I prefer it when the RC community support each other and find the squabbling a little bit of a turn off. That said, I do like you guys too, so no offence meant. Just subscribed here, i usually am on the lookout after bargains & for some abandoned rc's in the electronics container in the recycling facility since i got this job. As we swing by there almost daily I've found a few of them that's been worth salvaging & fixing up, though a bit slowly perhaps heh. Like an original 1986 Tamiya boomerang, needs a new chassis & front bumper, which is a common failure point because of the design of the chassis & front bumper mounting points. A new bodyshell, wing, wheels & tires maybe as well for making it a bit nicer then the orange bodyshell, green wheels & yellow rear wing. (Yep that was the colors the original owner picked for this with a paintbrush & i believe model paint or perhaps just regular oil paint, its properly thick on there & difficult to remove, but it does stick too it.) A pair of HBX TL01 clones, which I've kind of combined too build a bit of an onroad/rally car build with, upper links are slightly too short though, dunno if I've messed up putting something together the wrong way around or if it was like that already. And recently a kyosho raider based Citroen ZX rally raid car, from their " scale car series " missing driveshaft on one side, electronics, servo saver, servo & steering linkage. And the thing with kev is he probably didn't know how low of a charge that random battery he picked had, but he honestly should have checked. Plenty of those lithium ion packs have a cutoff voltage at like 5.4 - 5.6v so under load that just shut itself off causing the car to take off by itself. I also have a Traxxas 1:16 brushless ken block rally that was about too be thrown out as well. Just needed a charger & a reprogram on the ESC to get reverse working again, currently waiting on the post to find a lost package with a new micro servo that i ordered after a nasty crash at around 70 km/h that killed it. And my first find from there, which is a Traxxas stampede 2wd, Grave Digger version which i never found the bodyshell for unfortunately, but i have put some money towards a brushless esc, servo saver, servo & found a 3s lipo for it, which had a cracked casing but works perfectly still.

Stick with it guys. I went in for that raffle thing once, for one shot at it to see how it all worked. I was inundated with mails, upsell and more mails to suggest I spent more money because only X number of tickets were sold. etc, etc.. Despite all the options for mails to be off I was getting them, several a day. You can't even deactivate your own account either, they have to do it for you! I contacted the firm behind it and they said there was nothing they could do, so I sent a report to the gaming commission and then they finally deleted me from their database. If the business model is getting stuff for free and then coining in big time like that, nope. Not sustainable, people will get fed up with that and stop sending stuff if it's not at all valued. A fair few channels do it, not just in the RC world and I just skim over all that now. As for smashing up things fro 'laughs' no. Pathetic. I'd rather be skint than look like a bellend.

It’s just the way KZbin is guys. You either need to play the game how it needs to be played which’ll give you rapid growth, but means you’re not gonna do things how you want to. Or you do want you want to do and hopefully grow a niche audience over a much longer period of time. If you’re doing it for cash, do the former, if it’s just for fun, do the latter. There’s nothing wrong with people optimising their content for KZbin and viewers, if anything it’s something we all should be doing as we want people to watch our videos. Channels that perform well aren’t taking views from you. We’re only in competition with ourselves to continue to make great content and improve what we do

If I'm honest, I unfollowed your channel at the beginning of this year. I'd been a subscriber for over two years at that point. When I got back into the hobby in 2021, yours was one of the first channels I followed. What I loved about you two was that you raced for fun, low-cost budget RC cars that were not really designed to go racing, in a field and looked like you were enjoying yourselves. I really enjoyed the RB10 vids, the FTX vids. Then you both went higher end buggy racing at a similar time and it appeared like you were putting out vids more often than before to 'chase' views. I kind of lost interest when you did a vid talking about potentially doing some raffle comps. I'd much rather watch a video of you two setting up a track in a field and racing DR8's against each other than you going racing with a Team Associated RC10 or similar. I appreciate that isn't probably the best template to follow to gain a larger audience though. I recently unsubscribed from Talbots channels. Every vid he does now follows the same template. Get expensive RC, add a load of expensive 'upgrades', smash it to bits and then say win this car on raffle. He is basically creating content to do raffles now for the most part. I'm sure that is a fantastic business model for him and he continues to grow his channel which is what he does it for. I fully expect Kev to end up on GB News at some point wearing a tin foil hat though. So basically, what I am saying is don’t chase views, popularity or financial security through your KZbin channel. Or I’ll unfollow you. I have re subscribed today.

Keep doing what your doing, allways great to watch your video’s. You both bounce off each other and no other channel has that. If you want to make money, you need to cover everything RC, i just cover the vintage side, with a smattering of modern tat 😁

Well done guys. Keep doing what you're doing. You are just nice guys and very respectful to the hobby. When I met Mark he was genuinely interested in the people at local clubs and a nice guy to chat to. Hope to see you popalong to wycombe again soon
