if micheal made popcorn from 8-year-old corn, it's safe because he stored it the right way. (from what I see) when corn is dried, it doesn't spoil easily since there's no moisture for bacteria or mold to grow. plus, popping the corn with high heat kills any germs. as long as the corn was kept dry and away from pests, it's perfectly fine to eat.
