I actually was arguing about this topic on twitter. this video really helped me to answer
@Secret_Moon5 жыл бұрын
@@sadegh6khan543 The arguments in this video aren't adequate though. 1st, not every change in body structure need to be of use for it to be retained. As long as the change doesn't considerably hinder the survivability and ability of the creature to have offsprings, it can be retained and passed down to next generations, until a change in the environment facilitates its usefulness and it becomes dominant. So, it's totally possible for the animal kingdom to have a bunch of species with wheel body structures of different roundness, even if they don't actually use them. 2nd, there are examples of road like structure in nature, such as ant nest or cave like structure, very popular in insect and rodent kingdom. 3rd, human is not the only species that has communist society. Ants, bees and a lot of other animals have social structures in which they voluntarily do their labour (a kind of tax, sometimes even to a deadly cost) to contribute to the wellness of the whole community.

Pretty sure in one of the books from the golden compass series there was a fictional species of animals who used the seed pods of a tree that they co-evolved with as a type of wheel. They were round seed/nut things and they had a hole in the middle where the animals could put a claw through to act as a axle. They lived on an open grassland area so the road thing was not an issue. They were also removable and replaceable as they were not technically part of the animal which solves a lot of the other issues with this idea. Always thought that was a really cool concept and the closest to what it might actually look like for an animal to use wheels.

@Kevin_Street6 жыл бұрын
If roads lasted long enough to count in evolutionary time scales, then some animals may evolve to use them. As mammals, deer probably evolve over time scales of tens of thousands of years, so they probably won't get a chance to make crazy physical adaptations like fur-lined wheels unless we're still making roads that far in the future. But adaptation can happen a lot faster in other ways. For example I've seen coyotes that sit by the side of the road and look for traffic before crossing. Maybe our roads are encouraging animals that live beside them to be smarter so they can learn our ways and avoid being hit. The dumber ones end up as roadkill, while the smarter ones more capable of learning new behaviors live to breed another day.

Wait a second I have made a discovery! According to my calculations, the majority of animals should be able to pick up a pen(and possibly even a pencil). This in theory should make it possible for an animal to take a driver's test. This will change everything, especially when talking about space travel. Think about it. A space crew could consist entirely of turtles, who have a much longer lifespan than a human. They would also have a camera attached to their head so they'd be able to broadcast it and shit. Wait there's an advantage! If you have wheels instead of limbs then your knees can't be weak and your arms won't be heavy. Less time spent complaining and more time spent making babies.
@ianji6 жыл бұрын
In Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy there was a species, the Mulefa who had evolved a symbiotic relationship with the wheel tree. The tree produced large round seed pods and the Mulefa, on reaching puberty, fitted seed pods onto spurs on two of their four limbs, allowing them to roll. For roads they used some kind of smooth solidified lava flows.
@FavvvvazM16 күн бұрын
The real answer is in 3:10, it is because of the lack of road. To make it simpler, the lack of flexibility and adaptability

I know that this is an old video but I'm REALLY disappointed that the "His Dark Materials" trilogy wasn't mentioned. It literally has fictional wheeled animals in it.
@LivingParadox876 жыл бұрын
I agree! I thought the solution in the case of the Mulefa using a wheel-shaped seed pod as a wheel that could hook onto a horizontally-sprouting joint was pretty ingenious. It wouldn't require the animal to actually grow and maintain wheels as part of their anatomy but equip them from other life forms. Together the trees that produced these seed pods and the Mulefa created a symbiotic relationship.
@Temp0raryName5 жыл бұрын
@@LivingParadox87 But did they also build roads? Or, I'm guessing, they evolved in an environment with nice flat ground?
@kittyandtiny91595 жыл бұрын
@@Temp0raryName It's shown that the area in which they live has large stretches of solidified magma flows which the Mulefa use as roads. It's really interesting how their species has evolved to suit the world, I'd really recommend the books (or the BBC series supposedly starting this year).

Why don't animals have jet engines
@hmhmhmlol325211 жыл бұрын
Hmm, or do they? After all, jet propulsion is merely built up fluid expelled backwards, and an engine is any machine that converts energy to motion. Some Cephalopods use pressurized water for locomotion, thus they are technically "jet propelled animals" hahaha. Combustion jet engines, maybe not, since those are just a bunch of wheels anyway.

They went over this in one of the Terry Pratchet books. It posits(in between all the silly fantasy writing) that the reason that dragons or other fire breathing creatures don't exist because the chemical processes required are just too complex, and such a creature has to be small and stupid and will have a tendency to explode at random.

This guy needs to read The Golden Compass trilogy. In a parallel universe there are these animals that use seeds as wheels because the tree adds chemicals that make the animals self aware as a lure. The animals then developed to rely on the entheogenic seed wheels and road-like terrain.

Nature does "make roads", in forests animals use hunting paths they tread on for hundreds of years. Moose make them, remember them and use them to the point that in Scandinavian countries they build roads around them now.
@daniellane85174 жыл бұрын
Indeed, and even more roadlike are the highways of leafcutter ants, which are cleared of vegetation so workers can carry leaves back to the nest effeciently. These are perhaps the closest thing in the Animal Kingdom to human roads!
