This is my favourite Hannibal, nowhere near as sadistic as the TV version, nowhere near as spiteful as the brian cox version, and far less emotional than the hannibal rising version. This version is someone who seems genuinely like someone who delights in being a guide to will and Clarice through cryptic messages, really dislikes discourtesy and has a soft spot for females and children that is endearing. And really when you think about it, Will should've decrypted the message first, then let it run, then set a trap for Dolarhyde with his family safely barricaded.

When Hannibal says he has other resources, could someone help me understand what he's referring to especially as his cell is empty?

It's not such a complex thing. When he says that he's telling you that even if you take his books away he has an incredible knowledge which can give him fun inside that cell as good as one physical book would be. Until where I know Hannibal Lecter knows by heart the information of about 300.000 books. So, they don't hurt him taking his books away, he has a whole library is his brain.
