Pope praises Indonesians for choosing children over pets

During a visit to Indonesia, Pope Francis suggested people in other countries choose pets over having children as he praised Indonesians for having large families. The pontiff’s remarks on September 4, 2024, also focused on global demographics and sustainable growth policies in the Asian region. In May, Francis raised similar concerns when he said a “democratic winter” affected Europe and he warned leaders that declining fertility rates would have dire consequences in the future.

As my friend there explained, Indonesian people, especially the older generations, tend to push their kids to get married quickly, citing various reasons (grandkids, for example). Unfortunately, while those coming from well-to-do families would be okay by that, many from low-income and poverish segment also adopt the same mindset without having the balanced financial security to support it. So while birth number is high, the number of social issues are growing at the same rate. My friend works for an NGO for kids, so he is well aware about child abandoments cases or situations where parents cannot support their kids. While I respect Pope Francis' opinion, he still came from Italy where healthcare is available for all. A country where even if you only do random odd jobs, you can still enjoy a decent life. That may be a bit of contrast compared to Indonesians.

Why is other country make the cost of living so high for their own citizens? Even poor people have a cellphone and can still eat three times a day here in Indonesia, why can’t another country also implement a system like that? I was shocked when people said fresh vegetables, or tofu, or tempeh are so expensive in the west (even for their own people) to the point people choose to eat mcdonalds because it is cheaper than healthy food

I think it's not because they are rich, but the difference in the standard of living, I wouldn't call Indonesia a "Family Making Heaven" either since recently the Indonesian middle-upper-class population has been decreasing due to poor labor laws, increasing taxes, and other small factors that contribute to the problem, I've lived in Indonesia for my whole life so something like this is kinda normal since seeing the economy decreases in a decade or two, but it will prob recover in the next 2 or 5 years depending on the rules placed by the president or congress
