I used to work in a K-Tel warehouse waaaay back in the early 70s. Mostly signing in shipments and fork lifting crates of records and tape boxes from place to place. I have to say - boxes of albums am heavy!, and I don’t mean groovy. Luckily I was young enough to take it. Nowadays it would kill me. A perk: they let us have free records. In general K-Tel wasn’t my go to record company, but there were some pearls amongst the clams. Anyway.. hope things are going well for you… Have a nice day, Matt. Best to you…

@@jonvought700 Well, it was was - for a short while. Shipping and receiving was mainly counting incoming pallets of records, and keeping paper records of the ins and outs. And a little forklift work loading and unloading the trucks. But when it closed in on winter the shipping and receiving part really dried up, and I spent days standing in a circle with other workers, opening returned product and tossing the packaging into a bin, so the product would be repacked and sent out again. That was beyond tedium! A couple of days and I told them I was quitting. In all honesty - as an old hippie - I had no problem ever walking out on a job if it suddenly "wasn't my thing." But I did come out of it with some serious muscle buildup from the truck loading/unloading. K'Tel made a man of me!!!

I had a few K-Tel albums and other compilations, and they spoiled me. I came to expect every song to be a hit and didn't have patience for an album that had only one or two songs I recognized- (or none! Horrors!). So, I delayed getting into albums until the very late '70s. Even then, my favorite albums were compilations by Wings, Steve Miller Band, and ELO. Of course, we had the Saturday Night Fever and Grease soundtracks, but they were more my mother's thing. I have to say, Matt, you have quite a comprehensive collection of '70s albums--a veritable sonic museum!

Fun fact about K-Tel, much of their music was not mastered from original tapes, but from the actual 45 singles thus the compressed sound. And they supposedly flattened the signals so they could put like 10 songs on each side, which of course made the Fidelity awful.

We had a stack of those K-Tel compilations. Now there`s a shining example of Canadian creativity ! Even as young teenagers, we thought they sounded like absolute crap but we could rarely afford "real" albums. I love the idea of learning to dance to disco music from a record. That`s right up there with audio swimming lessons ! The Krofft Bros`. H.R. Pufnstuf was extremely weird for me as a 12 year-old. I understood later that they must have been "puffin` the good stuff". Fun video Matt. All the best to you in the new year !

Hi, Matt: Happy New Year. When I first saw this video, I got interested in looking at your 60s collection because of the K-Tel albums. I didn't see any but I did see you very quickly flip through the Young Girl album which, along with my Brooklyn Bridge album, were the first two I ever had at around age 12 or so. I loved almost every song on Young Girl. I'm in Canada and our K-Tel records started out as 'Syndicate' albums from a company in Winnipeg. I have all seven of those and they were superb other than the slightly lesser quality. My two favourites are the 24 Solid Hits and 24 Power Hits. I used to have a 240 approximately album collection but sold them way back. This was a fun video; thank you.

My younger brother had that "Lenny & the Squigtones" album, also "The Great White North" by Bob & Doug McKenzie. The only album I ever bought from a TV ad was "The Rolling Stones Greatest Hits" also called "30 Greatest Hits" from Abkco. Never regretted it, all those early '60s classics up through "Sticky Fingers". It had the original 5 members' faces on the cover and Mick Taylor as well.

This is a fun video. Some of the albums surprised me, but I shouldn't be, since records were a way of both promoting and cashing in on popular TV shows. I remember when I was a kid, the local library had the Sandford and Son album. Back in the 60s and 70s, comedy albums were extremely popular. Bob Newhart and Bill Cosby had some gold records. Steve Martin was one of the writers on the Smothers Brothers show, and occasionally appeared in a skit with them. Somehow he started doing standup comedy, and became a star.

Hi Matt: Being born in 1956, I and others of my generation lived through some seminal periods of music and some very interesting and very different musical genres. At 8 years old, I watched The Beatles’ debut performance on the Ed Sullivan Show and subsequently became a fan of the British Invasion bands as well as artists like The Byrds, The Association, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, Simon & Garfunkel, The Mamas & Papas, The Turtles, and so many more. By the time I was in high school in the early 1970s, the major artists of the day were Led Zeppelin, Chicago, Santana, The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Yes, Elton John, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, America, Gordon Lightfoot, and Joni Mitchell. Then by the time I could legally drink and go to nightclubs in the late ‘70s, Disco was all the rage, and my girlfriend and our friends used to dance the night away to the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack. By 1979, Disco was giving way to New Wave, so we continued to go to dance clubs, but we were dancing to The Police, Blondie, Gary Newman, The Flying Lizards, The Knack, Devo, and The B-52’s. So people of my generation - the mid-Boomers - in many ways enjoyed probably the greatest variety of music of any generation, from The Beatles to Folk-Rock to Jazz-Rock to Blues Rock to Disco and finally to New Wave. I don’t exactly relish being 68 now, but I and so many others of us who were born in the mid-‘50s were exposed to an incredibly varied and eclectic mix of musical styles. I have to say that in retrospect, I wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Some of my critics who are younger music fans (younger meaning born post 1989) explain to me that "I'm all wrong" and that there is music today being created that is every bit as good as the era you describe and that I talk about on this channel. I believe the time frame you identified will be seen in the future as a 20th century art movement much like the renaissance or post impressionism. Being 68 is a good thing.

Despite being into rock music and mainstream lps Monkees, Beatles, Stones, Hendrix, McCoys, which had one neighbors mom bar me from brining them over, ha ha, I had some youth oriented records. Disney’s Haunted Mansion story book/ album was a favorite. I also had/have some sports oriented records detailing sports highlights and great teams on the Fleetwood label. We just used our imagination to make still photos come to life. That K-Tel “Music Express” and its purple cover was a huge favorite getting many plays in my bedroom- There are some GREAT songs on that release. Jackie Blue, Sky High,I’m Not in Love, etc. “Hit Machine”, and “ Star Power” were ones I also cherished. And what child of the 70’s didn’t sneak listens to other Parents’ Richard Pryor, and Red Fox albums with hilarious laughter ensuing

Jackie Blue has always been a fave of mine and Music Express was the first place I heard it.

When I saw the title, I figured Elton John, Eagles, Zeppelin, Steely Dan, etc. But then I remembered you also have a collection of rare albums that have good-looking women on the cover, so I couldn't expect the ordinary. All these obscure and ephemeral albums make a much more interesting presentation. Cheryl Ladd and John Travolta's albums actually charted on Billboard. I also am into orchestral film scores and have a large collection from Max Steiner forward. Happy New Year, Matt!

I remember ads for K-Tel and I really wanted a bunch of them. My parents said try one and we'll see how you like them. I was so excited to play the album and then started to notice "hey, they cut off one of the verses" or "they cut the guitar solo." You learned that cheap is not always better and sometimes your parents really are smarter than you.

I own 22 different bellydance / Turkish albums - it's all acoustic music so like folk, blugrass and acoustic jazz the sonics can be astonishing. Jeff Conaway was in the stage play of 'Grease' in the lead role - singing is is thing!

Hey Matt, sure loved this video! I still own my original Sesame Street album including the booklet...GREAT record and just like you, I played it constantly. My father got smart after a while and taped it onto cassette. I also had the same fire hat too because my mother was a fire Marshal in the 70's. Happy New Years Brother and sure hope it's off to a good start! Peace ...

Scott Baio also had a record album out. Although he’s not a great singer, the material was actually pretty good because he was a big fan of 60s music.

Enjoyed seeing and hearing about some of your 1970s albums, Matt! You've got quite the collection. Although I was aware of and occasionally watched Sesame Street and the Electric Company, was really more into Captain Kangaroo. In our household, my parents pretty much decided when and what could be watched by the kids. Of the three networks, CBS was the favorite (Which Captain Kangaroo was on). Fondly remember both the K-tel and Ronco record labels, and seeing television ads for their numerous compilation albums. My first 45s (Bought by my Mom for myself) were Archies singles (Jingle Jangle was one of the songs). These were bought at a Tempo department store (Did you know about the Tempo store chain)? Tempo was operated by the same company which had the Gambles/hardware stores. Remember the big Disco craze/budget albums in the mid to late 1970s. Also the Fonzie craze, when he became really popular with kids/his sayings, "Aaaaaay!" You didn't mention this, but there was also disc jockey Rick Dees, with his "Disco Duck" song. My first album (Which I bought myself, also at Tempo) was a 1976 budget record put out on the Pickwick label, called Today's T.V. Hits, as done by Kings Road, which had Kings Road recording their own versions of the themes for Happy Days, Welcome Back, Kotter, Baretta, etc.

Someone gave me a compilation album in the 60's (pre K-tel). The only song I can remember on it was The Bristol Stomp by the Dovels.

You could laugh all you want, but Savalas had a couple of number one hits in the UK! One of them was a spoken word version of the bread song “If.”
