To me am I a girl is more about masculinity and femininity rather then gender expression and how shes confused because society says men have to be a certain way and women have to be this way. But I think she wants and believes we should be able to express ourselves however we want no matter our gender, you could be a feminine boy or a masculine girl and that’s fine but society says you can’t and it causes so much confusion and frustration

There was a small time where I thought “I don’t feel like a boy” and I questioned why I didn’t feel like I was and I realized it’s because I don’t do things that are “traditionally” male but I came to realize the reason why I didn’t feel like I was a boy was cuz of society but I new deep down that I’m still a boy… regardless of what I do and what I like. You can be a boy and be feminine

I love the satirical nature of a lot of poppy’s lyrics and the tongue in cheek content of it. I’m also JUST realizing that the progression into metal music and X with its genre and mood jumping qualities is the depiction of Poppy as a robot gaining emotion

I am glad to be alive in the time of Poppy as I know no one just like her. Everything she does is interesting and often very removed from the boring mainstream and with each new thing she does I am continually surprised by the high level of creativity. This album is a transitional work and what would come after it is some of the best music and songs I have heard to date in this still new century. Poppy has had my ear for nearly 5 years now and it is my hope people will stop sleeping on her as they do not know what they are missing but at least you Fern know just how excellent Poppy actually is and a great reaction to Poppy's 2nd LP. Poppy rocks!!!

Ugh, I love this album so much. This was my peak Poppy stanning - the full on metal sound of her records after this are not really for me so I haven't paid them much attention. However, this album is a TOP TIER pop masterpiece for me. The production is so crisp, lyrically it's camp with some hidden messages, and it has an experimental sound while still being an easy listen (even the pop-metal sounding tracks towards the end)!

I’ve always been drawn to Poppy’s pop music and when I listened Am I A Girl for the first time I had just smoked and the last part of the album was so, so unexpected for me. At the moment I wasn’t on social media anymore so I didn’t expect that transition at all (been following Poppy since just before her first album) but I always been here for it😮😂 I was more than mindblowed that night it was the perfect moment to listen it😂 (im french sorry for my english)

Hey Fern! I know you get a lot of reaction requests, but it would be so interesting to see you react to Tori Amos. She was the embodiment of alternative female singer-songwriter music in the 90’s. I would recommend either Boys for Pele, which is her most experimental album, or her debut album Little Earthquakes. However, the latter might be triggering, as it has one song about sexual abuse, so I think it is appropriate for me to place a warning there. I understand if you have too many reaction requests already tho😅. I just think Tori Amos is an artist you would really vibe with. Her music is super emotional and her first four albums are all classics, so I would definetly recommend trying one out.🙂

Naww I don't see it as sad at all in 'Am I a Girl' where she says she wants to be a girl. Like she feels she is a gender nonconforming girl. Which is pretty rad itself, even tho it can cause confusion sometimes for some people who are in that situation.

I think it's on purpose. it's to depict the superficiality of the kind of feminism depicted on the album. the whole thing is a critique on liberal feminism and slapping a little shout out to queer culture meanwhile doing nothing to actually help these communities. at least that's what I took from it!
