Porch Canopy Build Final - Installation on the house

I'm building a canopy over the front door of a house supported on curved braced gallows brackets, the roof will be double roman tiles on 3x2 timber rafters, from below the the rafters will be seen but matchboarding will obscure the tiles & battening

👍 best of luck, just remember there's a lot of weight there, i considered the condition of the wall first, the holes i put in for the brackets weren't right under the window, they're to the side with the full weight of the 1st floor bricks right up to the roof on top 👍😊

Good stuff Gid. This work was part of my line when I was at it. Code 4 lead goes to about 4ft , then another piece with 6" overlap.This is for the expansion. The long lead Apron looks better but may crack ( could take 30 years) I always used lead bats for wedging the lead in with my hardwood bolster, but I know they are selling those spring clips now. My method was to put a half inch fold in the lead at forward edge and dress it back down towards you. Your claw hammer is actually good for folding it, or dress off over scaffold batten. This gives your "drip return" that stops capilliary rain driving up past lead and into your cut wall groove. If job was on an exposed S/W elevation, I put Butyl sealant well back into the groove, then offer the lead in there. Bat it up with folded lead wedges and dress to tiles. That sealant never dries out so makes it storm proof. Point up remainder of gap with mortar. I liked your nifty thick Diamond blade. Back in my day we put 2 carborundum blades on the 9" grinder to give the extra groove width. The bit at the eave for the felt is called a tilting fillet. Old way was a 6"x2" cut diagonal corner to corner to give that profile. Sometimes I did the cheeks of the porch in sheet lead, other times I wire lathed over the plywood and roughcast the same as the house. The knees I made similar to yours. If the roof was going to be heavy, ie Rosemary tile or heavy slate, I made triangular mono truss up and fixed them in with screwed rod and chemical grout at 600 mm centres. Then I just put the 2 knees in for show. Yip........you could have done with a hand on that, and even a wee scaffold lol. Looks good anyway ..........and watertight.

Thanks James, Van passed !! 😁 a couple of bits to sort out but I'm still on the road. 👍 I'm never out of work because people know I'll do a good job as correct as poss, a lot better than some out there anyway 😉 I don't think they will ever realise what it does take to do something like this, watching the telly on a night but not concentrating because i drift off into my work, It's always been satisfaction for me that I've done a good job i can feel proud enough to photos in the end. People who have painted the work by themselves or who've got a shit painter in, most of the time don't get photos taken after because it looks crap, one reason i spray stuff 😂

i totally agree with you badly painted work can and will ruin even the finest job and its brilliant your van has passed the test i had to put my car throught the nct {national car test in ireland} and the only fault they could find was a small little cut in a dust cover over a ball joint that you could hardly see 😒 the ball joint it self was perfect 😒 a lot of the time the tests are a money making racket as we have to pay for the retest but i suppose it was not too bad in a 10 year old car its the joy of motoring🙂🙂 looking forward to your next project 👍👍👍👍 regards james

Just about to do a pitch roof myself as a DIY’er. Watched this a few times to get the technique for the birds mouth and pitch. Really helpful vids. Nice one 👍

Thanks Adam 👍 sorry haven't been on line recently so if you haven't already built your roof there's one thing i can't remember if i mentioned in the vid, that is about the seat of the birdsmouth cut, i said 1/3 of the rafter but the seat cut of the birdsmouth shouldn't be wider than the wall plate, In Figure 2-15 of this link it shows the cut, If the cut is wider than the width of the wall plate the underside of the rafter isn't supported properly, If you go 1/3 & the cut is wider than the wall plate then change to 1/4 width of the rafter or even 1/5 or 1/6 until the seat cut is no wider than the wall plate. Ok I managed to get the roof done. It wasn’t as easy as it looks but your method was good to follow. My bird’s mouth wasn’t perfect but a bit of tweeking and I got there. I’m no tradesman so that just shows the method works 👍

Thanks 👍 I draw it then simply add up the materials, the hardest part is working out how long it would take to build it, so i break it down into parts & try to work out what i can get done in a day, In the end the price is an agreement with the client, at the end I stick to that orig quote, it's up to me to get it done within that time-ish, I don't add on more if it takes longer so like i say that's the hardest part.

👍 Some people have mentioned the head go pros, camera gimbals etc.. prob give a better shot but to be honest I video my work, i don't make videos if that makes sense, filming is secondary to my work, just setting up the tripod is a time consuming sometimes pain in the arse, my phone is in my pocket, if i had to film with a vid camera i wouldn't be filming it, sorry, Thanks tho n yeah i get work because people say it's hard to find someone, esp someone with experience, Glad you enjoy them, Thanks 👍

Nice job m8, the only thing that I would have done differently would have been to use lead mate sealant rather than sand and cement, it tends to flex and expand and contract with the lead better than cement and I know that your all about using the best products. Nice one gid

@@Gidjoiner each to their own we all have the different little things and ways we go about things. I just trialled the lead mate originally and found it to be just as solid as cement but it will also flex when the lead expands and contracts so it avoids the cracking you inevitable get with cement. There's nothing at all wrong with pointing them in though -- for anyone else who bar read this.

How would i calculate how far from the house I’m able to extend the overhang while still having it be able to support itself free floating, (without using supports to the ground) and how would i determine the proper pitch required for the maximum length and/or does it have to do with weight. Don’t want it to come crashing down on grannie ya know.....or do i? LOL. Just joking. I want to get the most coverage as the basement Walk out entry faced direct west which is where the storms and driven rain come from so i want as long of one as possible yet would Ike to eliminate support posts to the ground. As a a roofer i wouldent have pointed the tiles,you can buy dry verge units and there alot better than coming back to re point it every year

Thanks, i know these people wanted no plastic, as traditional as poss, they wanted the wood fascia even if that means some maintenance but thanks again i'l keep those in mind & although the house roof is pointed i'm sure they prob wouldn't have noticed if i'd used them, 👍👍

Hi, not an easy one t answer that, every job is different, i would poss change everything for another job, The main timbers for the brackets were 4x3, the wall plate i think was a 6x2 & the rafters were 3x2, I can't remember the size of the main beam that went across on the front, Sorry for being vague, 👍

Thankyou, much appreciated, 👍 everything is Pine or Ply, the white faced board, (Fascia) is pine, it's over 8ft long so a strip of ply would've had to be joined at some point but also ply can start to delaminate over time, 👍

Hi, Thanks 👍 That's not an easy one to explain, I charge materials + my labour, Building suppliers & tradesmen will charge a different price depending on which part of the country & I'm sorry but i don't share my labour prices online The materials came to about £400 + I quoted 5 days of my time 👍 it prob took me longer but at the end of the job i charge what i quoted in the beginning 😏

Hi, most of the wood should be ok painted,I put clear treatment on the most prone of the pieces, As long as wood can dry out it's ok if it gets a bit wet but design should be made so that there's no flat surfaces, water runs off instead & not allowed to sit/stay n soak in, on the bottom of the braces, in the little V where they meet the uprights on the wall i put some filler so water runs out, it doesn't sit in the V, that got painted.

Gid joiner could you recommend a clear treatment to use? Does this just go on before a primer? Also if I just prime the timber with standard white primer before fitting it should be ok to go?

Hi, it's not easy to explain in writing but the birdsmouth cut is roughly 1/3, of the width, (not always tho, you don't want the cut so big that the inner part of the seat cut is hanging off the wall plate not supported) anyway that piece of 2x1 is roughly 2/3 of the 3" rafter, up on the wall plate I'd taped it to the level at the bottom to get the true angle with the level sitting on the top wall plate at the top, imagine if i removed that piece of wood, didn't change the angle of the level but moved the level down vertically, basically the timber represents the remaining wood above where the birds mouth gets cut, I've put a picture on Facebook for you 👍 facebook.com/photo/?fbid=6287679351318378&set=a.153123471440694 Ps if you look at this time in the vid 'kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6LOdqaImrOjbbM' I use the 2x1 to make the line to cut to,

Yeah you can pretty much use it on most roofs, I've put quite a few on that's what I use, it's only for determining the angle, you might already have the angle if you're working to a specific tile that has to go on a roof with a certain pitch. or like this one i was sort of trying to match the main roof, the tile specs were also taken into account. but if you're going to do roofing more often you might be better learning rafter rules n calculations .... blah blah 🤣 Google - size of birdsmouth cut, 1/3 will come up often but like i say you don't want the seat cut any bigger than the width of the top of the wall plate it's sitting on. I'm a general joiner & don't want to give you false info, - On a bigger roof use a string line instead of the level when trying to get the angle.

The 2x1 taped to the level is to get the angle for the plumb cut at the top of the rafter, I do mention it in the vid but i understand it isn't easy or obvious if you're not used to this, I think watched a few times n maybe more understanding of roofing then come back to this n it'll be an "ah" moment 👍 sorry can't explain more 😊

Not easy to put a price on labour, it took longer than a younger man would 😃 & filming adds time, I built it over the last couple of weeks, not 8hr days, plenty of Tea 😎 what i charged & how long it took doesn't relate. Materials came to about £350, inc guttering bits, bought n waiting for painting to be done, some stuff i had, some like the 9x3 i had to buy more than needed, the Lead alone cost nearly £70.
