Fucking hell nice one mate, when we were doing arch formers in college getting my joinery nvq,s I could not get my head round how to find the centre of a circle at all. All the spiel the teachers came out with and spent an hour trying to explain to us that just confused me more and you have just bloody shown it in a way that I can understand in less than two minutes. Nice one, it's always done my head in knowing that I didn't know how to do that as I pride myself on knowing the inns and outs of carpentry, not that I've ever actually needed to be able to do it up to now but now I can. Sweet, your a legend. 👍🙂

😂😂 I know what you mean, sometimes it's really annoying not knowing, I did metal work & tech drawing at school so already knew some of these ways of figuring things out but some from college, previous school knowledge prob helped when at college or it could've been the teachers, mine was a nice old man that hated leky drills that were just becoming available then, 😊

Nice brackets. Traditionally the top joint would have been mortice and tenon, pulled together with a draw bored dowel, as would the joints on the brace. Particularly with modern glues there would be no need for the coach Screws. They do look nice though.

Yep, i think i mentioned the top joint but i didn't want to create weakness in that top piece of wood by chopping in a mortice, The coach bolts were just easy/overkill n the draw bored dowels - i didn't want to, couldn't be bothered...I wasn't happy with the size those tenons came out.. I don't really have an answer, 🙃😏 lots of glue n a big screw 😊 Thanks 👍

Traditionally, presumably for hundreds of years, the curves would have been done on a bandsaw (tool history, anyone?). And that would have had to be freehand? So you make use of the new technology, the router -- accurate but taking much, much more time? And instead of screws, would they have used deeper tenons with misaligned holes for dowels to pinch the joint tight? Can anyone help me here? Thanks!

Hi, this is U-pol body filler, it's a fine skim filler tho so is a bit runny. I've a massive 3.5L tub so i can be generous with it n it's cheaper than wood filler, Thanks Peter 👍

Hi. I use a clear treatment, Everbuild Lumberjack clear is the one i have but have had different brands over the yrs, without going into the specs n science you have to trust they'll do the job over time, most wood will last a long time as long as it can dry out after getting wet, I made a small gate a long time ago, blathered it in clear treatment but the owners never bothered painting it, it's still working 10yrs+ later, it goes on like water & i've never had an issue with any type of paint not sticking or reacting with it, it does feather the wood up a little just like water would, but just needs a light sand before painting, Thanks 👍

😁 I've only been putting effort into filming my work for about 18mths but I've been a joiner for 36yrs, this is my job & i'll carry on filming to share as much as i can, I discuss with clients the design & options for materials but in the end it's their choice, & i have to get the job done within time n budget so sometimes not 'perfect', There's gaps between my vids sometimes, i film my work not work to make vids for YT if that makes sense, so sometimes i can't film, the job's done before the camera comes out or i just have to crack on n get the job done, but i'll film & upload as often as i can 👍 Thanks 👍

Thanks 👍 I did have a look at the curved pieces online, mainly for the price but they were a bit crap & finding one the correct size might have been awkward but to be honest i didn't look much, It wasn't/isn't about saving time, I'm a joiner, why pay someone else to make what i can.

I did consider that, the wood that goes on the wall is 4" wide or the planed version of that 90mm, so the dowel would have to be quite long, if the tenons had turned out as wide as i intended it would have been more of a consideration but not with these skinny ones, i think i would feel like i was compromising their integrity. The top piece that is going to have the cross beam sat on it would have a hole drilled through it along with a mortice where strength is needed, Fair question Zuber but for an outside project no was the decision, Thanks, 👍

When you use PU glue do you bother to dampen the other surface or does it stick fine without?

yep but he tenons weren't very big, they were only about 1" 25mm long, the dowel would have been only about ½" 12mm from the end of the tenon or the face of the mortice piece, so i think it might have split out the tenon or the timber around the mortice, i also wanted the screw to be part of the support too.

@@Gidjoiner I often wondered if wedged tendons on the bracket would be a sufficient joint. I like using as little screws as possible.

yeah i understand that & normally i agree but there was a lot of weight & this is outside stuff, it's open to the elements so fat chunky solid fixes was the safer choice.

What filler do you use?

It depends, if it's interior or exterior, whether i want it to go off very quickly or can i leave it over night, the two part fillers go off quick but can be harder to sand & the white 'polly fillers' sand easy but deep holes take time to dry. 😊👍 I'm sure In time 👍 Set your standards high. I try to build something as if it is on my house & would i be happy with it, In my head i put my expectations high, but as you know when building these sorts of things you can't build something perfect, conditions, materials & the structure/house it's going against aren't perfect so when i fall short because I'm rushing to get it done within a time schedule, quality of materials or budget... at least the lower quality than I'd like is at least acceptable.

Could you not have just taken the template off to route the remaining timber? Rather than dropping the cutter

Yep I could have 👍 I do use the trimmer bearing to work against the side of the cut I've just made now n again but not normally to this depth, I'll keep that in mind, try to, afterthought is a marvellous thing 😉
