Their new albums just came out today. Been a very long time for them. The drummer, Gavin Harrison, is crazy amazing. And the work he does on the new album does not disappoint.

Porcupine Tree is a very deep well and this is a moment worth revisiting. Ten songs will yield forty new flavors. Yeah, their new album, Closure/Continuation dropped today; their first since '09! What's next Hate Song live in Chicago, Bonnie the Cat, Russia on Ice and Cheating the Polygraph live in Tilburg. Cheers.

You said they remind you of Opeth. The lead singer (Steven Wilson) produced Blackwater Park, Damnation and Deliverance (and playing guitar, keyboards, singing).

This is prog not metal. Small amounts of metal elements pop up in some of their songs but for most of their catalogue they are the descendants of Pink Floyd , Yes and ELP rather than Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Steven Wilson is a Prog officianado and has remastered most of the Yes discography as well as albums for Jethro Tull, King crimson and other 70s and 80s bands. For heavier songs from PT check out ‘Open Car’ or ‘Wedding Nails’

The whole concert is epic. Played in 013 Tilburg, my hometown. The drummer also plays in the band Pineapple Thief; I can recommend them. The latest three albums are great.

Absolute joy hearing you digest this for the first time….you are spot on in my opinion! It has in recent years become my favorite all time song! And it gets better in time! The complexity and musicianship are simply exquisite! The passion and execution in this live performance is,I believe, unmatched…

This kind of music is meant to be savored in its entirety. It's not about waiting for "the drop". The album this comes from is a masterpiece, IMO. One of those rare albums that I can kick back in my living room and let it wash over me from start to finish on the hi-fi. It doesn't hurt that Steven Wilson produces one of the cleanest and most balanced recordings around today. Other bands covet him just for this purpose, like on the recent Tears for Fears Blu-Ray release of their new album "The Tipping Point".

About some of the members, Gavin Harrison is one of my favorite drummers (Steven Wilson - vocals, also plays with Craig Blundell - other favorite of mine). And the guiar player, John Wesley, he's also a very good singer. He sings the choruses to Way out of here, but also has some good solo material ( like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gX3MfIWEhdFgpsU )

Glad to see you jump down the PT rabbit hole! Lots of good stuff and a wide variety of styles all blended together under the progressive rock umbrella. Next suggestions would be Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (another 12+ minute song), Half Light (to see truly how emotional they can be), Trains (folky and upbeat), Dark Matter (moody and atmospheric), and Hatesong (groovy and experimental)

Well...I've therorized you succesfully. :-)) Finallly ! You've touched almost all points that make this song/band special. Some call them "the best band in the world that nobody knows". I think the mix they offer is unique. You've noticed their intelligent way of writing music...which is an expression of their high intelect of course. Steven Wilson is a fkn genius. Songwriter, vocalist, guitar player, keyboard player...thank God he doesn"t dance as well. If you watch some of his interviews you'll notice he's a very smart guy. The drummer is officially one of the best in the world if you're looking for some "best drummer in the world" charts. He' seems like knitting with his hands. Although the music is not as heavy soundlike, the atmosphere is quite heavy, moody, spooky, ghostly. The lirycs are heavy as well (is worth looking those up). Th bassist brings heaviness to the song when he comes up exactly at the right moment. When the vocalist starts playing the piano, you also hear the sounds played by the main keyboard player wich are ghost like sounds. Indeed..I never feel like this song has 17 minutes. So many things are happening, soothing, heavy, bluesy, moody, takes you on a journey. The sound engineer for this concert deserves a prize of it's own. Impecable live sound. You already feel the need to hear the song again just to discover different sounds, I know the feeling. You'll listen to it many many times, I'm sure of it. . You've felt the Opeth sound in this song, in fact is somehow the other way round, Steven Wilson produced one of the Opeth's albums, they collaborated closely because they are fans of each other's music. "Wilson produced and contributed backing vocals, guitar and keyboards for Opeth on the albums Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation, also contributing lyrics for one song (Death Whispered a Lullaby) in Damnation."Thank you very much for reacting to this song ! :-)

My final (I promise !)obsession remains "Beyond the horizon" by Insomnium. It would be your first reaction to what you don't normaly do, a reaction to an instrumental song ( the fan made video ). Was I ever wrong about a song? That song is pure beauty ! :-)

poccupine tree is definitely a more atmospheric band and generally take time to set mood up though not always- check out songs like blackest eyes or the album lightbulb sun which are shorter

Very Pink Floyd, and yeah Rush, and a bit of Queensryche? Yet it's unique. All the instrumentals are damn near perfect. The drummer definitely reminds me of Neal Peart(I mean look at that kit!) . I don't know if it's my go to, time will tell. But it's very well written and performed and I enjoy it Great reaction!

this was more progressive rock than classic rock. Great song and amazing band, you can feel the influence on older prog rock bands like Pink Floyd, Rush or even some Genesis and Yes

You are correct, PT is not metal, they are prog rock much like Rush or Dream Theater. All of the band members are extremely proficient at their craft but drummer Gavin Harrison and singer Steven Wilson are top tier talent and leaders in their craft. They have a really nice catalog with albums so well produced that it's easy to start on track one and listen straight through just like you would for Pink Floyd or Dream Theater, only to find yourself restarting it again.
