This performance is the gold standard for these two arias, the greatest in the Mozart repertoire for sopranos depicting women wronged. Better than Fleming even, I wish we had more of her on You tube!

To my untrained ear, this is a wonderful performance, full of emotion and passion and I will returm to it time and time again, as I will Fleming's version ! FWIW I also think her eyes are really lovely.

Oh my, I saw this on TV when it aired. If I remember correctly, this was supposed to be just a concert and for some reason they added in Roschmann at the last minute. This was my first time ever hearing her. And I remember my father kept saying "This sounds too sad" (throughout both arias. Lol.) I tried to explain to him what she was singing. Ah, good times! And a surprise soprano. Loved it. She is wonderful.

I'm a Trump Deplorable and think an aria is the parameter of a firing range and Alma Gluck the newest most advanced firearm, but I am brought to tears each time I hear Dorothea Röschmann sing these two arias from Le nozze di Figaro. Sure, it ain't Achy Breaky Heart or Stand By Your Man, but down here in flyover country, it comes close.

For those who don't think Dorothea Röschmann can't sing. Rosina is particularly difficult as she is so reticent and never wears her heart on the sleave. In "Nozze di Figaro" Rosina is the mysterious one. Susanna is fairly simple, Figaro is the practical one, Almaviva is a jerk and so is Cherubino. There are the emotions Rosina dare s to admit to herself. The obo-declares what she thinks of Almaviva. In Mozart there is a lot of things going on in the woodwind. Note the lot of A's and O's in the text - that fits the overtones of the oboe.

Perchè mai, se in pianti e in pene Per me tutto si cangiò, La memoria di quel bene Dal mio sen non trapassò? I always had a problem with Janowitz on recording. Her vibrato was terribly goaty and her tone very boyish. In the theatre I have heard that these qualities were less annoying than on recording . Dorthea has less vibrato issues and a slightly more womanly sound than Janowitz.

Gracias.

I really liked her in the Magic Flute and considers her probably the best Pamina I've heard, but here I think both arias are a bit too high for her so it feels like she's forcing some of it and you can hear little cracks, Renee Fleming is better for these two arias; For example listen to Fleming's 1999 Met version, in the second "Dove... Sono" she literally sang it in a whisper, even as the pitch slides upward, which is an indication of superior technique--higher frequency pitch is incredibly difficult to sing softly, but she sang it effortlessly with (and amazingly) continuous even breath and sound. And she even changed it up to scale a even even higher for an emphasis. Here Roschmann had to scale up the loudness as she goes up in pitch which means that she doesn't have as good technique. Fleming also had far better controlled vibrato. One way you can tell quality of singing is by the vibrato, better controlled vibrato which does not compromise the pitch as much (because if you vibrato too much you can sound off-pitch, but lesser singers use that to compensate the effort) and makes their vibrato even, are usually better singers with better technique.
@MusikPiratCH9 жыл бұрын
Just listen to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in those two arias. Even better than Fleming or Te Kanawa! Best Contessa ever - also best Pamina ever! A true Mozart and Richard Strauss singer! No one has ever reached Schwarzkopf in those roles! :D

***** "That being said I don't think volume has that much to do with technique." LOL, just talk to a wind-instrument musician, it follows the same principle. Ask how difficult it is to play a high-pitched sound in pianissimo mode.
@AstriaICOW9 жыл бұрын
***** www.singing-tips-with-barbara-lewis.com/singing-high-notes.html "Singing high notes that are well-controlled and NOT always SHOUTED is a skill that many singers find difficult to acquire. For those vocalists who only use the belting voice, the highest notes will usually have to be loud or louder! To sing high notes with control - so that you can CHOOSE your volume level - requires that you use the right MIX of sound. In other words, you must know how to use your head voice."
