In this video we have the 2021 Porsche Cayman GT4 with the PDK gearbox. We also compare it to the manual version. How different are they??

I drive a 718 gt4 manual as my daily and my only car. The fact that it’s not as ‘easy’ as the PDK is exactly the point.

The 718 GT4 is a great car, in manual or PDK format. The lighter clutch in the 718 GT4 makes it a lot easier to use as a daily over the 981 GT4.

@@888mf4 yep, good point - probably so. Certainly, I’ve never had a sore calf from working the clutch, even in the heavy traffic I contend with daily in Southern California.

I had a pdk gt3 before they made em in manual. Then bought a manual 981 gt4 and barely ever drove the gt3 again. Unless you live on the track and live for numbers then buy the manual. My .2 cents.

Both gearboxes have their place. If you are only about speed get the PDK. If you are after the pure driving pleasure and the involvement of shifting your own gears get the manual.

I agree and don't agree. If I want pure driving pleasure I will buy the 981 GT4 or 981 Spyder. The car is more involving and sounds better. As a daily driver the PDK is the one for me.

Agreed that is why it is manual for me all the way! Actually I recently picked up a FK8 Civic Type R because of that sweet shifting 6 speed manual. In the all electric future, all EVs are automatics in practice and they are quicker than any automatic out there but you will never be able to get that driver involvement you get with a manual. For me, if it runs on gas it has to be a manual. BTW, on a side note, I love how Porsche is investing in e-fuel research and development. Way to go Porsche!

@@888mf4 no, only the manual. But for the way I drive none of the things you liked better about the pdk would be of any advantage to me and from what I hear the gear ratio advantage is only a couple mph.

I’ve always liked getting a DCT/PDK bc of the performance proposition .. but in reality I’ve always ditched it and come back to manual. drove a 718 spyder today and ordered my 718GT4 in manual. for me it’ll always be my preference.

I love my 981 GTS with PDK. I had been searching for a manual, but could only find PDK ones, so reluctantly opted for that. I am so glad that I did. My daily driver is a manual VW and that is a real pain in city traffic. Nice review, thanks!

I’m collecting my brand new 718 Spyder at the end of June. I opted for PDK as I already have a 997 GT2RS Evocation that is manual. My main reasons for choosing PDK were the long gearing in the manual and I had a 981 Boxster S which I sold recently and really enjoyed driving that car. The idea there is no driver interaction is not true at least not for me.

I feel the same way, I drove manual all my life, I couldn’t stand with an automatic, but when I bought a 981S with PDK I realized that this is not an automatic. It’s dual clutch, I feel as much connected to my car as with a manual, but with a different way of shifting gears and pulling the right paddle when I get over 6000rmp gives me the feeling of driving a motorcycle 🏍

I own and drive the manual 718 GT4, hard to admit but yes manual in traffic is a nightmare. But still engagement is sublime unlike PDK which feels boring after a month of 2 on street use. It will go down to your most uses and goal. With manual it will make you smile even if you’re slower than your PDK rival

I live in London and owning a manual GT4 is a nightmare. I think the PDK allows owners who live in cities around the world to own a GT4 and use it as a daily. If I wanted a manual GT4 and use it for weekends I would stick with the 981 Spyder. I owned one for 18 months and loved it.

Got manual 718 Spyder with Kline inconel exhaust , superior noise and mind bending experience. GT3 on order , first was PDK and after a week I change it to manual . I think PDK will get boring to drive on the back roads , no track for me. Cool video !

I currently own a 911Turbo S. This is my 17th Porsche. The first 14 were all manuals, the last 3 have been PDK. I never drive the PDK in just automatic. Everyday I use PDK manual mode. The only thing that I am not doing is using my other leg to clutch but instead I brake with my left foot and never let up on the gas with my right foot. Driving this way is so much faster and I shift the gears with the console gear handle. Once the Washington DC traffic is crazy then I back off but in nine years I haven’t ever used the automatic choice of the PDK, not even on the track. I will order a SPYDER with the PDK. In your video you listed the advantages but until you drive like I do with PDK there will always be those who say the manual is more engaging; but only a very small difference is noticed. My other sports cars are manual and yet I have more fun in the PDK manual option of driving.

Thanks for the feedback. I had this GT4 PDK for 3 days and thoroughly enjoyed using it, especially in PDK sport. I tested it against a manual version when we filmed and didn't enjoy it as much. That said, I love the manual box in my 997 GT3 RS 4.0 but that is not a daily runabout.

Glad the GT4 now come with PDK, however, I’ll keep my manual 2020 GT4. Plan on keeping my GT4 for a long time and if you look at cars from 10 years ago the manuals always are worth more than the auto-boxes (Ferrari F430 with 6spd vs F1 comes to mind).

Ferrari stopped producing a manual gearbox after the F430, however Porsche have listened to their customers and continued to put a manual box in both the 911 and the GT4. Therefore I don't see values increasing over time of the manual version. With traffic increasing significantly in Cities I think the PDK will become more popular. I do think that classic Porsches like the 964 will continue to see good demand due to the air cooled engine and incredible build quality.

To each their own, but to me...this isn’t a car designed for straight line specs, but an analog purist driving experience with a naturally aspirated engine which begs ‘manual’ to evoke the connection between man & machine. In my opinion, the tall gearing issue exists even with PDK...you’ll still be doing over 70+ mph in 2nd gear w/ PDK and breaking most speed limits (PDK save 5-7 mph). Also, the aftermarket exhaust fixes all the downshift and sound issues and arguably makes it sound better than the 981 due to the 4L engine. If Porsche had their way (no EU regs), that’s not the exhaust they ever would have meant for this car...it was a necessity and you need to uncork that glorious engine and it will scream like a GT3.

I agree, an after market exhaust fixes the sound issue but they are £5000 on top of an already expensive sticker price. Once you add PCCB, carbon seats and PDK you are over £90,000! I like the gearing in the new PDK gearbox.

@@888mf4 Certainly not cheap, but arguably the ‘best sports car’ (as you said) and compared to a GT3 or other cars that offers all that this car does...it’s truly a bargain at that price.

An After market does not really fix the sound probs, it fixes a lot of warranty claims doe ;)

@@NoName-qp1op I've been told that the JCR exhaust is very good but it is quite expensive. I used to own a 981 Spyder and that didn't need any aftermarket tweaks.

have a 718 Spyder with the manual.. forget what they say about the long gearing.. plenty of torque to enable use out of all the gears on the road.. one tip.. get a Cargraphic valve control unit.. now get the full range of flat 6 noises below 4K.. Cargraphic touring exhaust will be the next and only mod..

I love the Spyder version of the 981 and 718. Thanks for the tip on the valve control unit. How much did that cost? Does it affect the Porsche warranty?

@@888mf4 I was part of a group purchase but even then it'll only cost you about £300. It uses Porsche connectors and it pretty easy to install once you've managed to get into the engine bay. There are plenty of install videos on KZbin. I have the two mode unit (either valve open or closed). All it does is control the exhaust valve, nothing more and it can be removed very easily. You really get so much more out of the standard exhaust and most will find it's more than enough. During motorway driving you would have the valve closed as it will drone quite a bit, apart from that I leave it open. Not sure if it affects the warranty as such as it simply concerns the exhaust valve, nothing more.

I was surprised at how good the PDK version was once the PDK Sport button was engaged. The owner kindly lent it to me for two days so I got to experience it on all types of roads.

Good luck buying one with dealer markups. I wish you would have included a couple of soundclips of those downshifts you were referring to in the 981. I wanted to buy a GT4 Spyder (AKA 718 Spyder), but went with an R8 spyder because the manual top would have drove me crazy. Either way, the GT4 Spyder is still one of my favorite cars ever.

Yes the PDK is faster but the manual makes more challenging, more engaging and thus, more rewarding. The sound compared the 981 can be solved by installing over the axle pipes. You light not meet regulations in the UK, but if you can circumvent that, I would highly recommend it.

Totally agree. The 718 GT4 needs an after market exhaust. Just not sure I would want to fit one to a new Porsche and they cost over £5000 in the UK. That's on top of the £98000 sticker price!

@@ambersykes1419 We did a review of the 981 GT4 v 718 GT4 and concluded that the 981 was a more fun car but that the heavy clutch meant it wasn't a better daily.

@@888mf4totally agree, I had the same feelings with the Bmw M3 4.0 V8. Due to the high revving nature of the engine it just suits the double clutch transmission better. I think I’ve decided, PDK it is 😀

just finished a 600 mile wee trip in my 718 spyder comfortable and entertaining even the wife didn’t complain!! Previous gt3 pdk 991 which you couldn’t really explore legally on the British roads .Even travelling sedately spyder is more fun with the roof down .Ps roads in the Isle of Skye littered with pot holes and imperfections terrible to travel over mainland Scotland much more compliant

Just bought my 1st Porsche and its a GT4, coming from a DCT BMW M2, and after going for drives in my dads manual 997 GTS when I was younger I always dreamed of a Manual GT car, for me personally you cannot beat the experience, even in the M2 the DCT just made everything too easy, and it was less interactive. i'd personally go for PDK in the 992 rather then the GT cars. as for the sound, i've ordered a JCR system which for me makes it sound better then the 981.

If I wanted a manual GT4 I would buy the previous generation 981 model as I think it is more engaging and sounds so much better. For me the 718 GT4 PDK allows you to use the car more often.

@@888mf4 totally agree i dont even own a porsche but an Rcz which is tweaked and stiffer than the stock ones and love it as a manual its such a good drive. deffo though porsche have totally sorted their cars i have driven a manual cayman s which was wonderful and also had a drive of a friends aston martin v12 vantage which was also amazing but i was thinking ok now my rcz is going to feel crap compared to those and both times i was pleasantly surprised it still makes me smile when i drive it. not as powerful but as fun and engaging as tonnes of grip and mental brakes

I totally get why you prefer the PDK. For me though, I want a car like this to be an event. I want to get out of it feeling and thinking that I have had enough, until next time. I don't want it to be comfy enough for me to start driving it everyday. Cars that I have felt that way about have all been gone within a year because I got too used to them and bored of them (hopefully car manufacturers' sales departments aren't reading this and using it as a business case to push automatics only). So now I keep a daily with an automatic and a weekend with a manual. As a single car though, yes, I would probably get the PDK, then trade it in a year for a manual lol.

I drove a PDK GT4 a few months ago & thought the GT4 was overhyped.. drove the manual a couple of weeks ago & that car is sitting in my garage right now.. if you enjoy driving, get the manual.. if you want to go fast, get the PDK..

I maintain that most of y'all haven't driven a PDK Porsche GT car, so arguing about it is pointless. Unless you've experienced the thrill of perfect up and down shifts, effortless stop-and-go driving in the city, and the focus you get from keeping your hands on the wheel, you really don't know. I'm glad Mark made this video, he's really explained why the PDK GT4 is the ultimate version of the car - everyone seems to find the gearing on the manual to be too tall, but not many of us want a 7-speed manual!

The option of PDK allows you to use it as a daily driver. Try one, I think you will surprised at how good it is.

Agree both gearboxes are brilliant. But when it comes to resale, manual cars are better at holding up their values. In fact, the top speed of the second gear in the manual is not that much higher than the PDk

I agree, both are great. With regard to resale there has been a manual GT4 around since 2015 so they are in less demand. The new PDK gearbox is in high demand and I think over time will become more popular.

@@888mf4 I'm not sure chap. I think in the not too distant future gear changes of any type will be replaced with the linear and rather dull electric motors coupled to even greater ‘smart’ vehicles that automate or, shall we say, take away more driver/human involvement and essentially reducing cars to an A to B vehicle. I think therefore the enthusiast will be looking for the polar opposite found in a manual box with a PDK coming in as the alternative. Either way, PDK or Manual, the GT4 is, if not the best, very nearly the best small sports car on the market today and will be remembered and cherished as such in the years to come.

Th pdk in the gt4 makes sense. But on the spyder.. dont think so. Since the 987 spyder had the pdk option and these are not sought after as the manuals. In the end the gt4 is a track device.

The 987 Spyder with PDK is a great car. They are also excellent value at around £40,000 in the UK. The roof is a little complicated but that aside it is wonderful value for money now.

@@888mf4 the 987 spyder pdk no debate about how great it is and that for 40,00£ its a great car. But from what I have seen the manuals are more sought after. The drawback was the roof.

So here's my dilemma, I own a 992 Carrera S PDK. I am considering switching over to a 718 GT4 PDK. Do you think it is a wise decision? Will I be more thrilled?

The PDK is faster and easier to live with. Can be as engaging as an F1 gearbox ,if you chose. Current 981 CS PDK. Have owned multiple manual Porsche, can't see going back to pedaling again. Cheers.

I bought a 718 GT4 manual with buckets last year and it was an amazing, amazing machine BUT it was too much for the roads here in Ireland. It’s only good at full attack as you say so I agree entirely😎 I traded mine in for PDK Carrera T and find it a far better road car. That’s not to take anything away from the GT4 though it’s an absolute animal. Great review and I’d love to know your thoughts on the T as I had dismissed them at launch but they’re a great package.

I haven't tested a Carrera T but the owner of the GT Silver 718 GT4 PDK we tested here used to own a manual Carrera T and loved it. Said the 7 speed gearbox was great and that the car was perfectly balanced.

@@888mf4 I agree. I also was intrigued by python green. However after seeing many examples in different lighting conditions, I decided it had too much of a yellow hue. Now I am looking at Chalk or Metallic Carrera White with red deviated stitching

Don't blame the car for tire noise, change the tires instead if you don't like it. Conti are noisy on all cars, it's a matter of priorities.

If it's your daily get a PDK. For a track and canyon car for fun the Manual is the way to go. As far as on track a F8 or Huracan would wreck the Cayman.

I would still buy a 981 Gt4 or 981 Spyder if I want the manual version. It will be interesting to see the 718 GT4 PDK go round the Ring. I think it will be rapid.

This is not even a debate! This Icon of an internal combustion engine cars needs to be manual. It's a historical issue. Anything else at this time on Earth is just wrong.

Manual Transmission a Half Second Slower ! That's it.... well I prefer driving the car not it driving me.... I take the Manual I don't need to be the fastest. I prefer enjoying the driving experience. I went from a 2004 Lotus Elise 6 speed manual transmission for 11 years to a 2016 Mustang with the Automatic Paddle Shifter 6 Speed Transmission. Went with Automatic, because I thought if it's good enough for Formula 1 drivers. .and faster. Boy this was my biggest mistake, and I was bored after a month of ownership. I dread the day the Manual Transmission will not be an option.. I enjoyed throwing gears on road course tracks. 👦🏻👍🏻🏎🏁

The magic of the GT4 is still being a old-school formula, so manual fits better in my view. PDK clearly a technically better gearbox, but not the engaging one for me.

@@888mf4 Only very short; a longer drive planned in 2 weeks. PDK is a better package, but I still like to be involved more, hence flawed package would still be my choice. I might be one of the very few who might still prefer the manual. But I should also say that driving the 981.GT4 daily is totally fine with me. I sit very close to the steering wheel and the clutch is totally fine with me. I even prefer the harder clutch to the GT3 Touring’s lighter clutch - it is easier for me to use. Re the video - again top job

I am a big fan of PCCB as they are light and therefore reduce the overall weight of the car and also the mass at each wheel. They also don't spit out brake dust!!

Be warned potential buyers. Although the gear ratios are shorter in the PDK, 2nd is still 79 mph; 3rd gear is 108. Compared to 83 and 114 respectively. Just boils down to what type of sportscar experience you want.

The 718 GT4 PDK accelerates to 60mph 0.5 seconds quicker than the manual. That is a huge difference and you really feel it.

That’s from a standing start due to launch control. 99% of the time when you’re rolling it doesn’t make a difference

Add headers and the over-axle link pipes you reduce the 0-60 time another half second to 3.0. That’s every day no matter the temperature with PDK and two mods. Plus you make it sound like a 964 911 Porsche which is better sounding than the 981 GT-4.

For two reasons. 1. Your warranty may become invalid when Porsche find out you've fitted non OEM parts and 2. They can be quite expensive. The JCR titanium valved race pipe costs £4,695. That would take the car we tested over £100,000!!

@@888mf4 Not all racing car drivers know how to drive! If you tell us his name I can look up his success. The gt4 is too slow to need pdk and is probably the best application for one of the best gearboxes in the world. Perhaps if used solely on the ring with a relatively inexperienced ring driver a pdk might be better suited.

@@floatingingravity You are entitled to your opinion. I own a 997 GT3 RS 4.0 which was only sold with a manual gearbox and I love it. I also love the GT4 with the PDK gearbox. Try driving one and see what you think.

@@rscholey85 Not if they are fictitious racing car drivers!😂 My point was based on numerous motoring journalists who expressed their preference. Those that really understand cars and how to drive them properly generally preferred the manual. Both are amazing but the manual is much harder and hence far more rewarding to drive on the limit.

718 seems to lack the character of the 981 models. It should have been given more power which its 4.0 engine could easily handle and the aural sensation. I cant help but feel it is compromised and not given the opportunity to reach its full mid-engine potential.

The 718 GT4 PDK doesn't need more power. It hits 0 - 62mph in 3.9s which is 0.5s quicker than the manual version and goes on to a top speed of 188mph! What is lacking is the wonderful engine noise of the 981 GT4 and 981 Spyder. This can be solved with an after market exhaust.

The manual 718 is already old ? My god . Both manual and pdk are exceptional. It depends on your utility . I don’t understand why you want to compare both . it goes faster ? Are you a race driver ? No. So this is not so important. Only the pleasure counts. Secondly, you just have to delete the opf for the noises . I can guarantee you that it sounds amazing after that . We understood that you prefer the pdk but this is subjective. There is no versus . Only for the views I guess . Let’s be more professional and don’t consider this great manual car as old only because you prefer the pdk. I won’t say that the pdk is for pussies and the manual for real men. You got it ? I did a comparison between the two, and yes, when you get back into the manual after driving the PDK the former feels a little 'old fashioned'. It's still a good car but the PDK really lifts the limits of the car and in PDK Sport it is very entertaining.

@@davidalexandreg I was trying to convey the message that I have a manual GT3 RS and therefore appreciate the 'old school' cars from Porsche. However, I also appreciate the advantages that the PDK gearbox brings to the GT4 and I think if you drive both back to back you will see the benefits too.

@@888mf4 Wow that’s a difficult question. For fun in a sports car it has to be a manual as the first choice. As an every day car and fun car PDK. I once did I a Porsche experience day at Silverstone and drove both the 911 991.2 manual and PDK. I was determined to prefer the manual, however after driving both was very conflicted. The PDK is very good.

@@julianadams2206 I never thought I would prefer PDK over manual but in the 718 GT4 they've got the gear ratios right and it just works. The PDK really suits the car. I would not own a manual GT4 as a daily, but would own a PDK as a daily. The only thing putting me off is the price! I don't think a 718 GT4 PDK (with PCCB, 918 bucket seats and a few more options) is worth close to £100,000.

@@888mf4 Having started driving automatics in the early 90’s which included my father’s 3 speed auto Range Rover Vogue and XJ 12, I’m just staggered by the progress in automatic transmissions in the last 25 years. Is a 718 GT4 with options worth 100k? Very tricky as 981 GT4’s still seem to be around the 70k mark which might suggest that 100k for the newer car is entirely reasonable.

As sad as it is the Manual gearbox is in its final death throws. When all new cars are BEV. The gearbox will be obsolete..

You are right. I know 17 year old kids who are not taking their driving test on a manual car as they see no need. However, there will always be a demand from hard core enthusiasts and that's why Porsche still offer a manual option in the GT3 and the GT4. The problem with the 718 GT4 is that the manual gearing is too long. The PDK fixes this issue and is therefore the better car. I still think that the 981 GT4 is a more involving car if you want a manual gearbox and that 3.8 Litre flat six is a gem.

@@888mf4 admittedly that was in a 718 Cayman, all of which, coupled with the PDK, made me decide to see it through on my search for a manual Cayman R …which I now proudly own. The search took two years! But yep, there is no right or wrong answer to Manual vs PDK, whatever works I guess! Other then when it comes to resale, then it seems manuals command a slightly higher premium, perhaps a sweeping statement, but that’s what I have observed with the used Porsche market.

@@julian987r4 At the moment the PDK gearbox is in high demand and over time I see it becoming more popular. The problem with the GT4 is the long gearing and this is now resolved with the addition of another gear and gives the GT4 a completely different feel. I highly recommend going to Porsche and trying to take one for a long test drive.

Perhaps for the foreseeable future PDK popularity will continue/grow but with Porsches there will always be an ever increasing ratio of higher demand for manual vs the low availability stock of manual. The PDK market is saturated, the manual market is a drought. Take the Cayman R, when comparing mileage and spec as comparative as possible, as Apples to Apples as it can be, a Manual R commands and achieves £7k to £10k more to its PDK counterpart. There is a reason why the Carrera T manual, not PDK, but manual T is going up in value.

@@888mf4 4-5 mph less with PDK does not 'resolve' the long gearing when you are still breaking the speed limit in most places in 2nd gear at the red line. Also agree with Julian around future demand, especially when everything is rapidly moving to EV...purists will be seeking the most analog experience and willing to pay more for it.

It's not a real sports car if an automatic. Lose the gear box and lose 50% of the driving fun and engagement. That's why I got the manual spyder. When I want to relax and have my car drive me around I'll get into my quiet, boring tesla (even though it's fast).

I had a 981 Spyder for 18 months and loved it. The perfect sports car. However the 718 GT4 with PDK is a very tempting package for people that have to sit in traffic as part of their weekly driving schedule. Don't judge until you've tried one....

I would not recommend a 981 or 718 Spyder as a daily driver. Excellent 2nd or 3rd car. Most of the world's best sports cars are terrible daily drivers.

I would only go for a manual with this car because the resale value for PDK sucks. Take the manual R8 v10 or F360 for example these cars are worth more than their automatic counterparts. Especially when the car industry is moving to electric, a flat 6 MR manual will be more desirable, rare, and collectible in the future.

You are wrong. There is huge demand for the 718 GT4 PDK and 718 Spyder. You cannot get a 718 Spyder PDK this year and there is a waiting list for 2022. I know as my brother tried to order one. There is an issue with the gearing on the manual 718 GT4 and this has been fixed with the addition of PDK.
