I like to do a slower scouting run for cyclists, road debris, etc, then you can take note of any cars passing you on your way back down which can let you adjust the timing part if you have a good gap or skip it entirely if you don't see anyone at all. But his way is ok for a car I guess. I'm riding canyons on a motorcycle so road debris is a big deal. Small patch of fine gravel in the wrong place can be baaad news. The Cayman has so much more potential than the 911 and Porsche understandably is scared of giving it what it actually deserves. A cayman with shorter ratios and a 9000rpm redline would be the best sports car on the planet, especially better than the GT3...
@orbitaljunkie3 жыл бұрын
Was just about to comment this as well. If 2nd in the GT4 tops out around 70/80, that's the problem right there. Above the speed limit in most of the United States. Miata's second tops out at what... 55 or barely 60? For this kind of road I'd honestly prefer a Miata, but to each their own.
@gky30193 жыл бұрын
@Alaberti That cannot be the case, because the GT3 Touring has a 6 speed manual with a shorter final drive ratio, which shortens every single gear. Not to mention that the 4.0 of the GT3 is a different engine which produces a whole lot more torque compared to the 4.0 in the GT4. Ironically the shorter final drive should be for the GT4 instead. It's quite obvious that Porsche tries to hinder the GT4's potential, which makes sense because the Cayman would outperform the 911 any day, with the same power.
@gky30193 жыл бұрын
@Alaberti So what is your point ? They know they can sell more if they improve it...They keep improving the 911 but neer work on the cayman, while there would actually be a huge market for the GT4 if it would be quicker than the GT3. Most people owning GT3's just buy it because of the hype, they would buy the GT4 instead if it would be quicker. And since it can be quicker why is Porsche not improving it...Because of the reason i said earlier.
@jamaisvu26643 жыл бұрын
@@gky3019 Agree with this statement. The cayman has a lot more potential being lighter, shorter wheelbase, and better dynamics. It should have a 2nd gear top at 60. I have a GTS manual and there isn’t a gearing issue, it pulls from 40mph easily in 6th and if you want it to go quickly you drop to 2nd. Matt, since 2017 PDK has been almost telepathic in Sport Plus (no more redline shifts), you could have just left it in Sport Plus auto and let the car decide when to shift, that would have been helpful comparison on this video. Maybe with it would have decided there is enough torque to use 3rd more often and with lightening fast shifts it might have. I have dozens of friends with Porsches I go on drives with often, most have PDK and I can tell you they never use the paddles. I've started using mine recently just to experience something different on drives. Another comparison to this video would be to drive a 991.1 (i.e. non-turbo charged) 911 on the same road, see if you ever left 2nd gear.

I feel like the long gear ratios don't really matter that much in an automatic car. The reason why long gear ratios are a problem in the manual Cayman is because part of the fun of driving a manual car is running through the gears on accelleration and having to shift before and after corners. Having to stay in 2nd gear most of the time on spirited drives and twisty tracks defeats the purpose of owning a manual car. But with an automatic the experience of shifting is not as important. If it were that important to someone, they would just get a manual car. So personally, I don't really mind the fact that they haven't changed the gear ratios that much in the PDK version.

Looking forward to Shark Werks releasing their gearing update for the PDK as well. Hopefully that will make the PDK not just a great canyon carver, but track day weapon as well.

Joe. I don’t understand what the issue is with long gears. You’re driving a very special car. I love the way it’s doing it’s thing. You want a car that’ll hold its gears to give you more torque when your doing the business. I’d hate it if it switched gears when I want to leave a curve really fast. You want a car that shifts, go get grand dad’s car. This one is for the gas heads. Well done Porsche. You know your people. Drove the MK1 Spyder along the craddle of human kind in South Africa. That car was a beaut. Long gears perfect. Balance par excellance

What an amazing road!!! Also the car really shines on that road. After watching your video I really should be considering a Porsche Cayman GT4 for my next car, though I think I would still prefer the stick

Such a great video, Matt. Tx! At one point up in the twisties your comments made me think that you were eating a bucket of fried chicken! The road is THAT good! I'll be down that way late summer (Sept?) in a new 718 PTS Spyder and have ear-marked the road. T Thanks again so much.

I kept my $3,200 and went MT. Used the $ to get an aftermarket cage and some other goodies. Gear ratio nonsense is overblown. I have had zero issues with the gearing on this car.

That GT4 handles so good, looks like Matt is driving in fast forward>>> Wish I had a job like that. What. a. treat.

I have a 3.8 C4S PDK and run the Dragon mostly in second, with a little third. So given the amount of curves you've got there, 2nd and 3rd sound right. You should paddle shift though. It's SO fun! Instant power is intoxicating

I mean if you are driving a manual car but the gearing is so long that you pretty much stay in one gear and don't get to enjoy rowing through the gears what's the point of having the manual version? For the cayman gt4 I don't think this is simply a matter of if you want a manual if you want a manual. That said Matt 100% answered the question of if the pdk solves the gearing issue with the GT4, small improvement but still not perfect. Tangent aside that was a crazy drive Matt thanks for sharing.

The only slightly not perfect is the exhaust placement. The old center exit was perfection!

Strangely enough....as much as I’d prefer the 6-speed this PDK is heavenly!!! I’d probably just go with the automatic. I’m seriously considering one - I’ve been ramping up to buy a 911 by year end but the Cayman has really got my attention. No sunroof available, which might be a deal breaker for me. Guess I’ll have to think about it a little bit more.

In my humble opinion, one of the most beautiful sports cars ever put on the road, and that's saying a lot given all the competition it gets from within it's own brand. Utterly gorgeous car!!

Awesome, I own a early cayman and the GT4 is like my little croc turned up to 20! Lovely spec with club sport buckets and ceramics in gentian blue. My heart aches ...

Tell it how it is. If you want stick, get a stick. But I am tired about hearing about the gearing. Dope video. These are the roads these cars are meant for.

Can't drive the 4.0 around town. I'd give my left arm for the turbo 4 cayman S. Tons of low-mid range grunt great for passing, and some of the most sublime susp, steering, balance, cornering that make it one of the best sports cars period.

The PDK adds 30kg to the kerb weight, but has 10Nm more torque, is 1/2 sec faster than the manual 0-100kph and has launch control. So for my needs, i'd go for the PDK for sure, but with after market mods to further improve the gearbox and clutch.
