Restoring a Porsche 914 LE in my home garage. In this episode we'll tear the CVs down, powder coat the axles, reassemble everything, safety-wire the bolts and go through rolls of shop towels. Bonus: how to easily remove a roll pin.

That tip about using an old chuck on the roll pins is great! I had never thought of that. I strongly suggest safety wire on the inboard CV joints as well. They are easier to see, but if they let go the joint will do a *lot* more damage flailing around. The outboard ones will generally stay in the hole through the trailing arm, but there is nothing to restrain the axle if the inboard joint lets loose. There are a lot of ways to safety wire stuff; I'm sure there are a few dozen tutorials here on KZbin. I usually see the wire go around the bolt head instead of just out the side; it would start on the inside and go through to the outside, then loop around in the "tighten" direction, then down the other way around the other bolt, and through to the center. There are reasons for this, but I don't know them. I do know that's the typical way for aircraft style safety wire, though.

Thanks, Dave. As usual, you've added great info. Will definitely consider wiring the inside. How common is it that CV bolts back out? I always use clean bolts and new schnoor washers and have never had it happen on any of my cars. Am I tempting fate? Wiring the inners would make engine drops a PITA.
@davedarling4316

It's not common, but it's not unheard of. And they can do a lot of damage, especially the left-side inboard CV. The starter is right there, and it can get beat all to heck and break the transmission case.

@@IanKarr on a hi performance car, I have lost the bolts at least twice. once the axle dropped. the other times, the bolts were just loose. its too easy not to wire all bolts. good job!

The safety wiring of the bolts is brilliant, especially the pattern in which one loosens and the next tightens. Thank you for your these highly detailed videos! My background is VW, but I just got a 914 2.0 and your videos have been extremely helpful. Quickest I have ever hit the subscribe button!

Ha. Yeah, I hear that powder coating even once renders ovens unsuitable for food forever. Go figure. The PC oven I have is made by Eastwood and it's juuuuuust big enough for an axle. Would love to have the space for something bigger. Thanks for watching...and the kind words.

Awesome! Was considering doing a CV joint rebuild on my 2006 Mini Cooper S but hadn’t found the steps. Great step by step - . I can probably use my oven for the powder-coating as my wife never uses the big oven. Seriously we picked up a Breville Air Fry counter top oven and we have never looked back - over a year. The big oven never gets used. Thanks!

Glad you find the video helpful! Remember, once you use an oven for powder coating, it can't be used for food...supposedly ever again. Though I get it with the air fryer ;)

A couple questions and comments coming from 914-6. 1. It sounds like you didn't put anything between the boot flange and the joint. The manual says "seal with sealing compound Curil k". 3. Is there any reason to clock the joints one side to the other? Meaning orient the joint on the splines relative to each other? Maybe that is just off road vehicles to maximize travel? :)

I'm not familiar with -6's (unfortunately). Not sure if clocking them would help

You need to inspect the balls as closely as the races & cage. They will often be found to be out of round & or have the hard chroming given it up.

Ian, I had a question on how easy or hard the cv join slid back on the axel? I have one side that slide on and the other that needs to be taped on with a hammer and drift - your thoughts
@IanKarr
@IanKarr 4 ай бұрын
If the splines are clean, they go on with a bit of force. If they're not spotless, more force is needed. I also use a hammer and drift to ensure the washer is set.
