Porsche 914 vs. Fiat X1/9

Begin jaren zeventig waren ze een kleine hype: cabrio's met targadaken. Een vroege vertegenwoordiger van dit genre was de VoPo, ofwel de Volkswagen-Porsche 914, die op het moment steeds populairder aan het worden is. We zetten de 914 tegenover een andere iconische targa-ster uit die tijd, de Fiat X1/9. Een rijdende ode aan de seventies!

The Fiat really has the 914 in every area, it is far better handling with a far more modern suspension system. The 914 had to use torsion bars on its suspension. The X1/9 also has a far more rigid frame then the 914. Engine was the 914 uses a bug engine increased to 2L to match what the Fiat could do with a 1.5 L. Today the X1/9 is a solid autocross performer, 914s are not. The simple fact is the X1/9 is far more fun to drive if you sample both. They both rusted with the morning dew.

Both cars were rust prone, not just the Fiat. Karmann did not do a great job in rust protecting the 914 body and a design flaw allowed rain water to mix with battery acid and drip down to what we now refer to as the hell hole. This also explains why almost no 914 are left in Western Europe. Luckily many 914s were exported to the US and lots of them survived.

I would rather it was a lengthier comparison: daily long-term vs sporty driving on fun weekends - slalom / road track. I bet the crowd is with Porsche but wouldn't be surprised that the baby Ferrari pulls a surprise. In any case the X 1/9 wins the beauty contest - she's an Italian hottie of course!

@@marcchavez6658 The 4 cylinder version of the Porsche had about the same hp and the same weight of the X1/9, other than being the closest in pricing, so it would be a fair comparison. Especially thinking that both had been made to be rational "everyday car" too, with ample space for luggage.

They are both fun and sporty cars, albeit rather under powered....which one would you rather be seen in, the vw or the fiat??

Ich habe den gleichen 77er exklusiv Serie arancio metallic mit Cromodora.... Bei mir wird dir allerdings nur bei trockener Strasse gefahren und der ist seit 1979 in der Familie. Der wird nicht verkauft, sondern vererbt😂😂😂

I'm a huge Porsche fan, but always thought the X1/9 looked a lot better than the 914. The Fiat was styled beautifully.

the x1/9 looks like it goes faster, even standing still compared to the 914. Unfortunately the reality is, for the most part it just rusts faster :D

lol Don't you know... In 1979, a track test between sport cars in french magazine had these results : 1st place in 2'00' Golf gti 110hp, 2nd : X1/9 85 hpat only 2 sec behind with 50kg more (100 pounds)...

@Rohantha Jayakuru Of course you don't know that in 1972 Giorgetto Giugiaro, while visiting the VW factory (the german management had asked him to design the Golf) found a disassembled Fiat 128. He asked why they had a 128 there, and the VW men answered "We aren't able to make so a spacy and well engineered car" (they were studying the modern Fiat 128 to copy many technical arrangements). Therefore, please, don't argue about Fiat if you don't know the history. Before the Golf, VW hardly built the Beetle and the van. The Fiat X1/9 is a cheap sportscar with a very modern technology for the period. Its 128 sport 1.3 engine had been designed by Aurelio Lampredi, former Ferrari engineer who designed many 1950s and 1960s F1 engines and cars for the Cavallino. In Fiat he designed the SOHC (the 128) and the DOHC (the 124 sport), two reliable and performing engines, real icons for three decades.

Yeah, it's offensive for the X 1/9. The X 1/9 was designed by the same guy that designed the Lancia Stratos (Marcello Gandini), but the Stratos had been designed in a hurry, and with an engine he didn't really like. With the X 1/9 he had the time to do everything as he wanted. The result was that, tested by the same guys, the Fiat X 1/9 Abarth was judged to be a better rally car than the Stratos. After having already been homologated for the 1975 world rally season, the project was aborted to favour the 131 instead, but the X 1/9 are still among the most effective cars for uphill racing.
