Agreed. I used to own one, still miss it for several reasons. I now dream of getting another one with a good body but sad engine and transmission, and then electrifying it. Would keep it until I die.

Ever since I saw the 928 in Weird Science as a kid, I became almost obsessed with it. I used to ogle my neighbor's 928 almost all day, and when I wasn't doing that, I would study the Chilton 924/928 manual cover to cover. I used to read Excellence magazine all day at school. And I still want nothing more than a 928 S4.

When I saw it in the movies Scarface and Looker as a kid, I was hooked and other movies that followed, Risky Business, etc. Also, back then, Porsche had quite the lineup. The 911, 924 and 928.

The 928 has to be one of the greatest automobiles ever made. It never fit the Porsche mold so it never really got the respect it truly deserves on the world stage. I believe if an unknown German company built the exact car, it would have more respect. When it came out it just was not what a Porsche was supposed to be so lots of people discounted it. That is sad but good at the same time because enthusasts can get a world class car for average car prices.
@fleuger99
@fleuger99 Ай бұрын
@shananagans5 one might say the same thing about the Cayenne when it was launched, not appreciated by Porsche faithful but it was the vehicle that saved the company from bankruptcy. I also think part of the lack of mass adoption was the price, they started at $50K in 1985. To compare, a BMW 635CSI was $40K in 1985.

wow, this is fascinating. The car is so old, yet very modern as well. Even in the design, you just dont see many cars from the early eighties that still look like they could be sold today. Much better looking than the Cayenne, Cayman, or Panamera, hell, even better looking than a modern 911 with all the go fast bits porsche now sticks on them. This video is so weird. I am guessing Porsche delivered this piece to country clubs on Beta Max. Thanks for posting!

I delivered newspapers as a kid and was nearly run over by a beautiful teal coloured 928 on a sunny Sunday morning in 1979! It was common for kids to ogle any supercar that passed through our poor neighbourhood only huge engraved ‘PORSCHE’ name on the rear bumper gave it away. I was already a fan of the 911 because of its stunning Le Mans 24H performances. so I knew 4this was a car like no other. This was how my love affair with the 928 began. I the car of my dreams 23 years later, a gorgeous jet black 928 S4. Some years she could be a high maintenance mistress, but for many years a faultless long distance gentleman’s carriage and companion. A 928 really is more than a car as they say in this excellent promotional video. I still check the National car registry to see if she’s still on the road and I’m pleased that in 2022 she still gives its new owners pleasure’s over 30 years since she was born, a testament to Porsches formidable engineering quality ❤️🙏🏽

4m48s? anti corrosion warranty? I have owned a 1989 928GT, it has covered 280,000 KM & has never needed welding,nor does it need any now. Bought in Bristol 2004 & I have just driven around the far north of Scotland averaging 27MPG, (10.4L @100KM). Nothing about these cars is hugely expensive unless you get the franchised dealer to do the clutch. This one was a bit awkward on the single track roads though, & the only "disaster" I have suffered has been a front wheel bearing. Not bad at all!

That soft side trim strip always looks out of place. But I suppose that it is either that thing - or door dings. Seems a shame that the rotor-dial wheels seemed to have been dropped from the option list after the car's premier. Along with the 928, BMW's E31 is also on my bucket list. Beautiful and "tuff" looking at the same time. Not unlike the Messerschmidt 262.

Not driving to work is a fine advantage. I live in Perth Western Australia 2 kms from the CBD... 2 traffic lights. Plus short trips in cars are not good medicine for the engine. Maybe I will leave the car to my g'daughter who will be 18 in 11 years time.. what is the female equivalent of a chick magnet?

bigjuliedive Uhh, a guy magnet, I am not too sure if there is an equivalency to be honest. Just make sure she appreciates old cars and doesn't not want it just because it's old. That would be a shame.

I have a black 88 s4 and a 79 aqua blue. I love them both. for different kinds of driving. The older is a beast with a 5 speed. The s4 is a different kind of beast. I can set the cruise control at 160mph and still try and calm my wife down without having to yell over the road or engine noise. Depending on how loud her screaming is. I have a bunch of 914s too. They are like go carts. If you had one 928 and a 914 youd have the best of both worlds.

I can fit just about anything in the "greenhouse". Its a huge trunk and the back seats go down too. I have taken my children, my wife and myself with BASIC overnight bags all to the bay area from salem Oregon and everyone arrives ready to do something instead of grumpy and tired like they are when we take our Ford Excursion. The trick is, your kids have to be like 12 years old and you have to follow the seat adjustment procedure in the manual to adjust your seat properly. (germans...)

Not just a mode of transport emblematic of a quality of life with all due regard to the seat design it was quite racy at the moment of presentation and would've had been something one would have had to experienced then and appealed to conservative buyers the 928 was a Grand Tour vehicle with high performance. Credentials I experienced the interior at that moment and to this day has a nostalgic place of admiration

I had a 1984 Porsche 944, paid $1600, dumped $7000 into it, and sold it for $2000. Loved it... but there's something about the styling (interior, etc) of the older late 70s Porsche 928s.

They would all have to LIE to have commercials like these. Nothing like a Landshark. They really have no equal. Everything about them is unique. Even between the models. My 78 and 88 are two entirely different yet remarkably similar vehicles. You know your in a 928, that is unmistakable, but the two are also very different. The early model is a stick and very sparse on luxury type items, but it is a MONSTER. The 88 is like driving a Mercedes that canabalises other Mercedes.

If I didn't have a 911....my second choice was a 928, but here in Australia the 928 is virtually impossible to get it as a manual & there's no way I'm getting an automatic Porsche !

The automatic was the correct transmission for this car. It was made to be GT rather than a sports car. Having own one myself, they are not small cars.

Interestingly the S2 auto starts in 1st, but in the S4 it starts in second, supposedly to control the additional power to the wheels when taking off. Fits the GT genre rather than the go cart feeling of the 911. Although the auto sucks some of the power I always found it such a pleasure to drive and the transmission was rock solid. On both my 928s have never touched the transmission even after 170Ks on the clock

@drouin916 Don't sell it. It is a great car. Just stay on top of the maintenance and it will last for a long, long time.

I have a '79 928 that I traded my '73 Mercedes Benz 460SE which ran for it. I have no idea if this 928 runs or not.....I don't even have a key to it. I do have the paperwork to it but I'm in no position right now to try and get it running. It's been sitting for 3 years or so in my garage with my equally challenged '83 944.
