I'm enjoying your series, thank you. I also have a US 1979 Porsche 928 black on black 5 speed... with engine out due to blown head gasket. I'm trying to get it back together.

Hey G Man - oh wow, pretty similar situation (my head gasket was ok I think, but I had bigger issues with that spark plug). Hoping to get the engine in soon, although I can imagine playing around with the suspension for a while.... Thanks for watching!

@@MrToddgibbs Hi Todd. Thanks for the reply. I am in the process of rebuilding the front suspension on my 928. I opted to upgrade the cross member to an 83 or later one so that I could use the newer, cheaper and easier to find solid rubber motor mounts from 928 performance. You may want to consider this, too. Im going with aftermarket polyurethane front a-arm bushings (upper and lower) from powerflex. I also have lowering springs and Koni adjustable shocks. The S3 exhaust manifolds are also nice if you can find them. I am upgrading my heads by doing some mild pocket porting on them. Also, some unshrouding in the combustion chamber a bit. David Vizard has a great book on this. Im also adding a 1980 euro s cam set from a 4.7S. New upgraded valve springs, too. Your project has inspired me to finish our 928. I gave it to my son years ago, and its just sat in the garage. It's actually in very good shape. I also have a 1984 928 Euro S that is in about the same shape as your car. Its black, too, but with an auto transmission. Anyhow, cheers from Sunny Florida, USA.

Sorry for slow reply - just back from holiday. Wow, you are doing the full job! Nice idea about switching for the later cross member, I didn't think of that. My engine mounts seem pretty solid so I'll probably stick with those (and the original cross member, its looking pretty good now) I am considering the power flex antiroll bar bushes, but Im waiting until I have he suspension apart so I can order everything in one go. Ive left the engine stock, and I kind of like it that way. Im not looking for any performance increase (my 996tt covers that) and I want to restore with as many of the original parts as possible (Im trying to only replace where I have to, or where the part is hard to get to once all reassembled. For example, I wouldn't mind using the original shocks as I know they are easy to replace should I later find out I need to. Really glad you are back on the project though, it will be a beast once complete! Maybe you will then move on to restoring the black beauty.... Thanks for watching :)

@@MrToddgibbs I can understand keeping your 928 stock. Once you start upgrading parts, it's hard to stop. Yeah, that 996 Turbo of yours is a rocket for sure. Those air-cooled turbo models are going for insane prices here in the USA; they are just untouchable for most of us. I wish the 928 prices would follow suit. Anyhow, thanks again for putting out such useful videos. PS: It would be so cool to have a right hand drive 928 here. I've never seen one in person.

Just found this .... Great work!! - I have spent endless hours on my 928 and there is still so much more to do.... never took the engine out but would love to have done a rebuild on that - fingers crossed that wont be forced on me at some point 😀👍 Format and content is excellent keep them coming....

I am probably at the end my journey with still lots to do and will pass my car on very soon but have learn’t a huge amount along the way..... looking forward to watching.....👍😀

I think that "goopy stuff" in your water jacket was some type of stop leak thats poured in to stop a radiator or head gasket leak. It looked to me like that 1 cylinder that was black had a bad connection at the fuel injector or a bad spark plug or wire.

Ah maybe that’s what it was…. It certainly wasn’t what I expected!

Where would I be without my weekly fix of this! Another good progress step, well done Todd. You must feel that things are gathering pace now? I'm looking forward to seeing how they fix the scored bore as at one time I thought they were classed as unrepairable but I believe that isn't the case any more? Thanks for another enjoyable episode and keep up the great work. All the best, Mike 👍
@MrToddgibbs3 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, thanks :) ... yes, to be honest I was a little deflated when I saw the cylinder scoring, but my attitude is that everything is possible, so I'll just get it fixed. Taking the block (actually block, heads and cam carriers) over to a company on Monday for them to look at. Depending on my bravery I will either leave it all there for them to resolve or bring it home to disassemble the bottom end, then return just the heads&block for repairs. As far as I understand they can line these cylinders. Worst case scenario is that the block is beyond repair, in which case I have already sized up a used 4.5L small block. Will just add a few delays and expenses, but I am in no hurry. Anyway, enjoy the weekend and keep watching! Todd.

Always amazes me that nuts and bolts with exactly the same history corrode and sieze differently, looks like the head gasket was allowing water into the cylinders with corrosion.Honing those cylinders is very specialised so make sure your engineering company knows their stuff
@MrToddgibbs3 жыл бұрын
Hi Gary, yes it appears no two nuts are the same. And those that feel like they are turning are really just sheering.... I find it strangely enjoyable removing stuck nuts/studs. Could the head gasket cause the scoring in cylinder 4? I assumed the spark plug had failed but it was still receiving fuel, which was washing the oil away and allowing friction damage? The engineering company are very familiar with 928s, so hopefully things will be ok.... my gut feeling is that I will need to replace the block :( Thanks for watching!

Hey Chad, thanks! Yes, plan on doing _everything_ ... well, as much as I know. I'll resolve this cylinder scoring, clean everything properly, new gaskets/seals/fixings, new water pump, rebuild alternator and starter, new filter/oil/timing belt/plugs. Probably new distributor and HT leads. Various part of the wiring loom need replacing, along with ignition coil and both radiators.... ... wait a minute... thats basically the whole car ;) Hope you subscribe and continue to enjoy !

I’ve searched online and can’t find an explanation- I assume it’s just calcium and antifreeze, maybe mixed with a bit of engine flush... it’s not now either way :). Yes please stay with me on the journey. It’s only you guys that will get me through the hard times (which I’m sure are coming soon!)
@themessenger58683 жыл бұрын
Hey Todd, my guess is the residue in the water jackets is calcium. Those bolts are really soft...treat every bolt and nut as your enemy mate.
@MrToddgibbs3 жыл бұрын
Hey - yes, I think its a combination of calcium and anti-freeze. Its the first engine I've opened up so I didn't know what to expect, but I certainly wasn't expecting this sand-like stuff! It rumbles between your fingers, but thick enough to block the waterways. Those nuts at 8:56 and again at 14:41 really didn't want to come out, and an older me would have just snapped them off.... Im learning ;) Thanks for watching!
@bendangofonterra95083 жыл бұрын
Wow - this is awesome watching my favorite vehicle getting disassembled. You’ve completed this task now but what would your feelings be on an impact driver for some of these fixings? Would the short sharp shock help or do you think it could damage?? I missed out on a 928 prototype back in 2019 as I had just got my 86 S3 on the road and did not need money into another 928 at the time. Big regrets on not jumping on that. Thanks for taking the time to make the channel.
@MrToddgibbs3 жыл бұрын
Hey Ben, I actually have an impact driver but didn't use it. My experience is that it tends to sheer off bolts without me 'feeling' it. With a spanner/socket I can feel if its the nut turning or the stud twisting. 928 prototype would be awesome! would love to see that... Thanks for watching, be sure to subscribe and shout if there is anything you want to see.

I have low compression on the same cylinder that you broke the plug on. I'm probably going down the same road. I wonder if it's coincidence or something about cylinder 4? I'm keeping watching.... :-D
@MrToddgibbs3 жыл бұрын
Hi again Howard :). ... my suspicion is that the spark plug failed. (potentially was snapped by someone earlier) and that cylinder suffered fuel/piston wash. That caused the piston to score the lining. I might be wrong of course. ...

I'd be tempted to bosch a 32v used engine in it! :o That residue doesn't look ideal :(

Ah yes, I did consider it... but there is a lot more wiring etc that I would need to sort, and I don’t know if that’s wise for project #1

Is the 32 valve engine better than the 16v ?
@MrToddgibbs3 жыл бұрын
Hey Gaz - to be honest Im not the man to ask, but one advantage of the early 16v engine is that its non-interference, meaning if the cam belt snaps the valves won't hit the pistons :)
@MGRracing3 жыл бұрын
@@MrToddgibbs cheers! Does that include the 4.7 16 valve too?
@martinbenson76523 жыл бұрын
@@MGRracing NO NO NO the 4.7 is an interference motor. If the timing belt snaps your engine becomes a coffee table.
