id tape up the screen and then get into as much as you can see to see if the impact / extent of the rust you can access... If it's holed, pretty much for sure you'll need to have the screen removed to correct what's there, and potentially check for more .. either way to be really sure, the glass needs to come out.. Aluminium can oxidize and if contact with steel can corrode - only way to check is to get it to metal. I've never seen such a use of a drill powered nibbler..maybe some small grinders and cutters... it'll make life easier. Keep up the good work

Yeah will take the screen out, it’s hardly held in as it is! … the nibbler is just a cheap solution, works on most things metal. I’ll probably use a grinder to chop out a square patch

Try using paint stripper on the Bonnet/hood/shut lines and a plastic scraper to remove the paint, being a flat surface it shouldn't take long to remove. As for the colour, try using a Porsche colour that's similar to the Mocha but more pleasing to look at.

Thanks Paul. I’m thinking of doing that. For colour…. Will reveal soon, but it is a Porsche colour

Great work Todd. Weird to see a new view of your house from when you're moving the car about, but looks like you've got the room to add an extension to the garage on the side so you can get a 3rd 928.... or maybe just dedicated workshop space ;) Also loving the car archaeology as you're stripping the paint.

lol I _could_ build sideways…. If I were building my own tomb, if you get my meaning.

Can’t remember which you tube channel it was, but saw a very effective method for removing paint with paint stripper. Seem to remember that the guy applied the paint stripper and then covered it in cling film to keep the air out and left it 24 hours. Paint just lifted off real easy. Going to be a long job getting it back to bare metal.

Hi Martin. I think I’ve seen him. Will try to find again for reference. I only have one rear wing left to do really since I will get someone to chemically strip all the aluminium panels. Oh and I need to do the recesses

Big job Todd,you could media blast? Keep up the great work✅ Cheers Frank
@MrToddgibbsАй бұрын
I don’t have the resource to blast it (or the will power to remove everything). But it’s a decent idea :)

I would definitely recommend protecting the front and door windows to avoid sanding scratches. 😅 otherwise, good job!😊

Thanks Eugene, I think I’ve been good, no scratches yet (afaik).

Retro Power are stripping an aluminum bodied Aston currently and they used a heat gun and putty knife.

Thank John, will take a look

@@MrToddgibbs I have learned a lot from watching their channel to see their tools and techniques. They do some of the best work I have ever seen. I have a ‘79 928 with a terrible cheap black paint job sitting here waiting for me to strip paint :-)

Nice work! Still planning mine out, will probably do it in the spring as it's getting a bit cold now. Good to watch someone go though this process :)
@MrToddgibbs2 ай бұрын
Hey Nick, I’m happy to run ahead :) it’s not too bed, allow 2-3 hours per panel. Stop every 10 mins to avoid HVS (look it up) and wear a decent mask.

Seems like using a Dremel with a reinforced cutoff wheel might be quicker and easier.
@MrToddgibbs2 ай бұрын
Would that damage the metal? These pads only remove paint so I can go at it as much as I like :)
@jeffhammond89692 ай бұрын
@ I was referring to where you cut out the rusted metal with the nibbling adapter. For paint removal, with care you might be able to use a knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder, or at least a flap wheel.
@MrToddgibbsАй бұрын
Ah I see, yes - I’ll actually disc cut out a square so it’s easy to patch. Just got a knotted wheel, will try that - thanks

I thought all of the steel parts of the car were galvanized which you would want to leave undisturbed if possible. Not sure what protective coating would have been on aluminum panels?
@MrToddgibbsАй бұрын
No ides tbh, just following what others have said :)
@MrToddgibbsАй бұрын
Semi-tempted to just strip the entire thing - it’s lived 45 years in the rain and dirty, once I finish with it it will live its life in a warm/dry garage.
@jensmeier49492 ай бұрын
Hard Work, but it will be rusty soon if you don‘t prepare the bare Metal!
@MrToddgibbs2 ай бұрын
Hi Jens, yes it will be etch primed soon
@markfoster49482 ай бұрын
Not an expert by any stretch, but my hunch would be you’ll need to take the windscreen off to confidently tackle the rust and ensure it doesn’t come back in those areas….. MF
@MrToddgibbsАй бұрын
Hi Mark, yes screen will be coming out. Just curious if the experts thing it’s bad or not :)
