Back from the States and with most jobs ticked off the list for his rare Porsche 928GT, Gary tackles the dreaded, noisy, rear wheel bearing. But which car will he decide to exhibit at this years eagerly awaited, upcoming Classic Restoration Show, at the Birmingham NEC?

Thanks Gary - a small tip - I'm sure you know but it might useful for some enthusiasts - when you drain axle and transmission fluid, always check you can undo the filler plug before you drain the oil. With regard buying tools - sometimes the tools seem expensive for a job you might never do again , but labour rates especially from main dealer premium brands like Porsche or MB could be £300 per hour . If your classic is a Ford or VW and the job could be done by a good garage or local specialist - it might not make financial sense - love the channel been a fan since the start
@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession 5 күн бұрын
Absolutely sound advice. I’ve seen people completely joshed by emptying the fluid then not being able to get the ceased filler cap. Total nightmare when it’s inaccessible. Yes. Always make sure you have adequate tools before starting the job. It’s a no brainer. Also some jobs you’re only going to do once so pointless buying super expensive tools for those. Cheaper versions will do. I think people get carried away with top brand gear. You can get great quality tools on a budget. I have a mixture of top brands, reasonable and cheap. I love machine mart!! Regards

Takes me back to my days at a Porsche dealership in the 80's! The 928 was not an easy car to sell new. From memory we had about 95 cars on allocation to sell each year. The 4cyl cars sold well (924, and 924S, 944 and 944Turbo), the 911 we could sell everyone 4 times over, but the 928's were a struggle to move. Always thought they were like the XJS, bikg cars with a cramped passenger compartment. Plus to me that wierd Weiussach rear axle always felt a bit odd at speed.
@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession 4 күн бұрын
Yes Steve. They’re defining acquired taste but really starting to be appreciated now more than ever. Beautifully designed car but unloved can bring on many problems…looked after an well maintained, an absolute joy! Like the XJS was meant to be the successor to the Etype, the 928 was also considered an unworthy replacement for the 911 but as time goes on, both of these cars have become worthy in their own right. I think the 928’s are better than the 911 at least in design, looks, interior and as a grand tourer…Albeit controversial!! Regards.

That kind of threaded puller is very good tool. But with bearings One must be really carefully where the pulller parts sits on the bearing and housing. Especially when pressing new bearing back in. It is very easily mis thought that you can press it back from the inner race when the outer race is thight fit and vice versa. When that happens, curse a lot and start again. I've been using for many my mechanic years, 12 corner tool when allen tool strips. Usually 12 corner or xyz etc tool is just a tad bigger than stripped allen. Hammer the 12corner in and it is tight fit. Great tinkering video.

Gary, Nice job - rear wheel bearings seem to be one of those tasks that always get put off. For the rotor removal, hammers are not needed. Porsche provides a couple of threaded holes for an M10 bolt that you can screw in and it leverages the rotor off the hub.

Nitpicking here Gary, but units of torque are 'pounds foot' and not 'pounds per foot'. It's effectively a multiplication rather than a division. Same for metric so 'newton metres' and not 'newtons per metre'. One more thing. I would suggest that starting a thread with an impact driver is a very bad idea. Get it slightly crossed and before you realise there's a problem, the thread is damaged, possibly irreparably. Always start a thread by hand and only once it is fully aligned and threading correctly, then use a power tool if you want to. Great videos though and help me justify not going out into a cold workshop to work on my own S4. 😀
@classic.obsession
@classic.obsession 2 күн бұрын
Yep appreciated. I almost said pound per square foot so could’ve been worse!! Yes, I always make sure the nut is started before impacting and never over torque, especially on wheel bolts. I had to cut two alloys of one of my cars that’d been over torqued up at a tyre place once. I always stand over them and watch them do it now. Sometimes I get messages accusing me of not putting copper grease on bolts when rebuilding suspension etc but you can’t film everything. Appreciate you tuning in and your kind intelligent comments. Lots of good episodes planned for this year! You coming the NEC classic restoration show end of March? Regards.

Hi Gary, another job ticked off. Ignore this if you like, but people are mentioning lifts. I had the same restraints as you, not a lot of roof height. I researched all the lifts to death and came up with this theory. 2 post lifts are available in reduced height format, but they are expensive and need a really strong concrete base, which I don't have. Also, all the cars I have restored have needed jacking point repairs which is not possible with a 2 post. The scissor lifts are good, but are very restrictive access wise. I bought a HAMER car lift, you'll need to Google it. The down side is that they are manually operated, using 4 farm jacks to do the lifting. But the up sides far outweigh. The lift can be dismantled in half an hour and stored out of the way if necessary. It can be set up outside on the one possible day a year in the north of England! I got the extra long ramps, so if you have the space the post positions can be placed to suit the job. HAMER made a wheel free attachment, but I have improvised my own. I don't think they are in business any more, but the lifts come up regularly second hand. Mine was about £2K new, expensive, but I had a near miss with a car coming off axle stands, so cheap compared to being killed. It is the most useful tool I have ever bought. I live in Huddersfield about 2 minutes from M62 junctions 23/24, if ever you're out and about you'd be very welcome to call in for a brew and take a look.

Just a note. Torque is force x distance so the unit is lb.ft NOT lb per ft

@@classic.obsession An added correction: Torque is vector quantity and is the cross product (not multiplication) of the radius and the force vectors. That order is important, and so the unit of torque is ft-lb

Don't mean to criticise but that axle hub nut is supposed to be torqued to 322 ft.lb I was curious to see what you were going to do because when I did this job I had to buy a huge long 3/4" torque wrench that would go up to the specified torque. That hub nut backing off could be problematic...
@duncanfuller9594
@duncanfuller9594 7 күн бұрын
Yes, the torque for those nuts is over 300lbft so they’re not tight enough. I used a torque multiplier when I did mine. And you probably shouldn’t be reusing the nut either.

I’ve read 148lb, 320, 207, 400, 250, 322….im just amazed they differ so much with no definitive answer. I’ve never known so many people to have such mixed settings on a car!! It’s like, how many RHD 928Gt’s were built? I was surrounded by Dick rights at the NEC each telling me conflicting numbers. I think I’ll settle for the 322. Regards.

The Porsche workshop manuals can be found online for free. The only ambiguity that I’ve ever seen is that the manual says 460Nm or 322ftlb and 460Nm converts to 339ftlb

It’s not going anywhere for a while anyway. I’ve got to sort the collapsing p/s hoses first. Do you know how many RHD GT’s were made? I read there were only 38 delivered new to the uk. Probably another conflicting number!! Regards.

@@classic.obsession I think you are correct...38 I drove around with that hub nut undertorqued for a few 100 miles while I looked for a garage that would do the job. Could not find one with a torque wrench of that spec. Not even the transport truck garages had one. I ended up buying one and have never used it again since...

I was never a fan of this Porsche red but on a damp overcast typical British day, which is most days usually in the year, it's probably the best colour as it's does pop in these conditions. Pirelli quality in this case leaves a lot to be desired, don't you get "tired" shelling out more for the lower quality we see nowadays from even the so called best manufactures 🙄17:12
