The Porsche 992 Carrera T is the 911 everybody is talking about. Here you'll learn what's great - and not so good - about Porsche's super hyped, driver focused 911. The question is should you buy one? Watch and find out.
Overall, this is a fantastic Porsche (quite possibly the best I've ever owned) but like anything else in life...it has some downsides along with a ton of positives.

Okay I've had my Carrera T for 48 hours now. Great car, but 2 things I hate: stock audio system is GARBAGE and rear camera is terrible. Both of those things seem like a slap in the face for how much money you're paying. But otherwise, the car is damn good

Awesome car, awesome vid. No surprise about you bonding instantly with the car. Having the good fortune to purchase a car brand new from a dealership is an experience in and of itself; but getting to spec a special order car, and having it roll out of that delivery truck exactly the way you wanted is on a whole other level. Now that the car exists, no matter how long you own it, no matter how many miles you put on it, no matter how many times it trades hands in the future; That car will always be the car that you “built”; and your name will always be the one on that first stamp in the owners manual.

Congrats on your new T. I also just got one and the best thing I've done so far was a stage two tune. It totally transforms the experience and that muted exhaust note you mentioned is now much deeper without being overwhelming. With the valves closed it sounds stock. I went with the M-engineering stage 2 remap, valved soul performance exhaust, soul 200 cell link pipes and a CSF intercooler, BMC air filer and DO88 inlets & pressure hoses. The car is now pushing about 540hp at the crank and to me it feels like this is how it was meant to be from the factory. I would highly recommend this set up to anyone who is considering doing mods. Flat 6 Motorsport in Orlando did the work and they did an amazing job. They made a video of how the car drives and sounds so if anyone is curious check it out. Again, congrats on your new T, the spec is awesome. Cheers!

I guess that would depend on what breaks and why, but personally I didn't buy the car to protect the warranty or resale value. Fun factor is my priority and so far it's been worth every penny. I'm also told this platform can take a lot more than 540 hp at the crank.@@berponteberponte3231

I bought a 991.2 T (ordered new) when a lot of folks were bashing it. Once they realized what it was, they shut up. That legacy has carried the 992T sales forward, but at the price, it's hard to justify. I jumped to the 992 GTS since it wasn't much more and gets you so much more (wheels, brakes, power, springs, sport design, etc.). Nice T and congrats.

Agreed, sport design is a must for the 992, the base bumper 🤢. I love my 991.2 T, was just over $100k, and a tune really woke the motor up (same for 992, absolute must do).

Isn’t the base power plenty for the street? I was thinking if I got the GTS I couldn’t really enjoy the power because in 3 seconds I’m a felon.
@iKone911
@iKone911 4 ай бұрын
@@Westcoastrocksduh I mean, having another second before becoming a felon won't change much. ;) I would have gone with the T again if the price difference was a lot more than it really is. Once you add the options up, the T really gets very close to the GTS. Most of the reasons are not because of the extra power but the extra items you get (bumpers, brakes, etc.). I also wondered if the GTS would be too much power but I drove one at PEC and felt it was totally fine. Under normal driving you'll feel the torque more than anything else, and to me that makes a huge difference. The T is totally more than one would need under normal driving, but so is a GTI. Whenever I hear someone say 'It's all you need', I think to myself 'Why am I paying in excess of 100K for 'all I need'?' I want a bit more. ;) lol

Glad you are enjoying the new car. The 992 is really amazing. Regarding allocation, when I pulled the trigger from my 992 Turbo S, I got a 23 allocation immediately, but waited a month for the 24's for a specific option I wanted, No games, no ADM. That has been my experience with all three Porsche I have brought from them starting with my 993, but really depend on the dealer. I tried to by my Taycan at a new dealer in my local town and was a waste of time, 9 mo to be exact. BTW - I find that if I pop the sun roof vent it really helps with the buffeting, but also keeping both open an even amount helps and really wish there was a mode sync them when you crack them.

I haven’t been blessed to drive an air-cooled 911. So I was happy when you liked and enjoyed your new 992. When I watch most of the videos or read articles about 911, I feel that my 992 is not a 911 rather something else that was made by Porsche. BTW, I like that you spec’d the car the way you liked and didn’t listen to what most people say “if you want to add options, you’d better get 992 S”. Congratulations, and I’ll be waiting for your video on similarities between air-cooled and the 992 T 911s.

Enjoyed the perspective. I've had my 992 Carrera for 8 months now, spec'd from the factory. I too am very glad I didn't hold back checking options. These cars really are $150k GT cars that have been de-contented to allow a lower entry price, they don't feel right with rubber dash boards or corolla-level stereos. You gotta spec them up to the price point they sell at. Now I had the opposite opinion in my GT4, as a hard core track car it felt fine with almost no options. The one issue you didn't discuss about RAS is the whole lithium battery issue, they have an issue where they die and they cost a fortune to replace.

Great video, thanks. So Wife and I went to the Dealer South of Boston to shop a 911T for her (I'm an aircooled guy-993). Long story short; prices start at 10% over sticker, ~6 mos wait and unsure if she can order the Paint to Sample(Irish Green) because Porsche is pretty much at capacity..... Glad for Porsche, but the PTS is really frustrating her. Can grimace and bear the rest...yeah, 1st world problems. Enjoy your car!

What is the deal with PTS only being available on the GT and Special models? The PTS catalog was how I initially got my wife interested in my Porsche pursuit. She _LOVED_ building different specs and models. Unfortunately, the Porsche (US) website seems to be temporarily inoperable at times. At least on my end. Specifically, the 'New & Used Inventory' option continually gives me a 403 ERROR, regardless of the model. On numerous occasions the 'Build Your Porsche' page simply would not function properly for several days on end. They say misery loves company. Well, we feel that same frustration brother. Stay classy my friend.

Honestely, great review and great spec! Congrats on this masterpiece of a car! RAS, in the end, comes down to a matter of taste. You spec it or you don't - the experience of driving the car will be both equally exceptional. After weeks of dilemma, I ended up not opting for RAS, simply because I wanted a more natural, raw and authentic steering feel for the car. However, I did test drive a 992 GTS with RAS and I loved how nimble it felt, but also a bit too agitated and sometimes lacking the plantedness (that even a word? haha) of how I love a 911 to feel. But I might go with RAS for any other future 911. As I'm a PDK lover all the way, I went with PDK on my T. For some this may be sacrilege not opting for stick in the T, but I just love the way it makes me feel like I'm in a race car game in real life. Again, congrats!!

The Carrera T dosen't really make sense to a lot of people - its basically a run out parts bin model, they used to do this with the Carrera "black". I know several people that bought the T and regretted it fairly quickly - they work out instantaneously its not a budget GT3 as some try to claim, equally its not particularly good round a track particularly if it doesn't have RAS. Overall and in general, the 992 isn't that well liked - its not small and the interior, although well made, is very german taxi cab black and could have come from any mid-range german car. I have owned 20+ Porsche sports cars and the 992 series is the first that hasn't really interested me - in fact I gave up a 992 GT3 RS slot for a 296 GTB.

I've had no whistling, interestingly enough. Love the manual and no RAS, but in no way I was able to compare with one that did have RAS, so nothing for me to miss, I love it as is. I have a basic spec (no RAS, no 18-ways, no sunroof), but a few options that I needed (folding mirrors, heated steering wheel), shark blue seat belts and gentian blue interior accents (aka my exterior color) in lieu of piano black. Porsche Tysons was able to do my order MSRP for me and it worked out faster than expected. 2500 miles now in 2.5 months (1000 the first week drivng from ATL to DC via Tail of the Dragon, etc).

My thoughts when specing my T were similar to yours. No RAS (although I had been in a dilemma for weeks, but went for the more raw and predictable steering), no sunroof (in want the car to feel as stiff and sporty as possible, and in my opinion, a sun roof takes away that feeling a bit), no 18way seats, but I did opt for PDK (although a manual is awesome, I'm all about that race car game feeling of the PDK), race tex / alcantara all the way wherever possible (wheel, roof etc.), and I did opt for the rear seats as I have kids to sometimes fit in the back ;) But no matter how you spec it... you can't go wrong.

I liked the sport design pack but built the car in black (looks killer w/ the gray trim and wheels) … I thought the extra $7K for the SD pack would disappear, and I think the horizontal front face nods to the bigger GT cars. Some of the “luxury” options you added do actually elevate the experience. But there is one I definitely don’t agree with. That would be the 18-ways. They obviously have an enormous number of motors and mechanisms inside that add quite a lot of weight, which goes against the philosophy of the T. Ideally, the seat option to go with is the full bucket seats, but if this is a DD and the FBS are a bit too extreme, the 4-ways are a great alternative and won’t add too much weight over the FBS. Secondary to that if I was to really nitpick would be the retractable roof, which adds what, like 20-30 lbs, and in the worst spot, which is the highest part of the car. Other than that, you really nailed this build. I love that there is almost no visible plastic. You even got leather on the steering column. Big ups to that.

Even in the oppressive heat of the summer, and the 40 degree mornings like my glorious drive yesterday, the windows are always down. Not a daily, so it's a bit easier, but still. I need those flat six noises with the windows down! I think the T would suit me perfectly. I love everything about it, but I don't think I could handle any of the 992 generation wind buffeting issues. I really hope this is an issue the 992.2 solves. The idea my "lowly" 996 glides through the air without a whistle or rattle while a brand new 150k 992 buffets and squeals is genuinely shocking to me. I have a 991.1 base Carrera ( tolerable noise levels) and a 982 GT4 ( often intolerable) thinking about a 992 T to replace the 991 but worried that it may be too loud. Any thoughts or comparisons on this? Thanks!

Porsche improved the responiveness of the 992 3.0 turbo over the 991.2 3.0 turbo engine. It's subtle but noticeable.

T is for touring but many people associate it with lightness because of the history of the T spec. However, having a glass roof adds so much weight (?) that the sum of tiny weight losses elsewhere is probably negated. If you have 1500 kg car you will not notice 15 kg difference ( d/D = 1%) in road drive. If you are a sensitive driver you might notice about 5% difference. Of course driving at the margin at a race track and a lap time might tell it sooner but then you have to be already very very very fast driver. The buffeting - have you tried having the windows open differently between left and right. Many cars get at resonation speed buffeting one window open which then vanishes if you open the other window just a little. The other window needs to act like a damper, just like bleeding. I have 996 and if I remember correctly the windows need to be open differently at certain speeds. I rarely have the windows open - living in not that warm country. The buffeting is not only about the inside volume and the hole like Helmholz resonator but also about the von Kharmann wake buffeting which is down to the overall shape of the car and the Reynolds number ( a non dimensional scale number representing the inertial and viscous forces ratio in flow). As a phenomenom wake buffeting is related to the screws you sometimes see around high industrial chimneys. Sometimes if you shoot with a tripod when windy you will find the tripod starts to vibrate at certain wind speeds if it has round legs and center pillar. Then you take off your coat and wrap it around the tripod and it vanishes. You can also try rope or somekinda net around the tubes - bit like the golf ball, you try to manipulate the wake formation. What I would like to know is how do you find the size of the car compared to anything before 991. And also overall sensation between the older models and the 992. One point of view is that e.g. I dont like when the car makes the decisions. I even hate the comfy turn signals. I want to decide how many blinks I message. I dont want Porsche’s of Bosch’ engineers to decide it for me. Like I said, I “only” have a 996 but the deep gratitude you experience when driving or even looking at the car is amazing. Sometimes you are on a beautiful road in this car that goes forward so efficiently and with ease - all the troubles and uphills are forgotten and life just feels good and you realize that it is gift of life, that what ever the history, you are still lucky. The amount of gratitude is earth shattering.

Nice car! I had a 2017 911S (also black), and while I thought it was a good car, it was a little too insulated and GT like vs pure sports car. I had a 2009 base carrera before that and I had more fun driving it than the 2017. I agree the T has plenty of power. To me, the 911S almost had too much. I have a Lotus Emira at the dealer as we speak (waiting for CARB certification), and look forward to that and I am also in the line for the 911 T. I think it is a good mix of power/weight and driving fun. I also think the quality of 911's is really good. I think they have nailed the interiors with the right mix of tech and physical buttons and integrated so well both ergonomically and aesthetically. I can't stand the new BMW M's where everything is on a big screen that looks like a skate board sitting on a dash. Enjoy your ride!

I drive a 992 T and since the first minute It reminded me of my first drive in a Porsche 911 964 30 years ago. This car brings really back some of this analogue feeling, although the balance of the chassis and the traction on the rear axle is so unbelievably good, that it takes all little bit of the thrill away. But me maybe this is for good. I enjoy my Carrera T very much because it brings back the emotions back to a car that maybe just got a little bit to perfect.

Only thing irritating me is the dang P zero tires. They are borderline dangerous when even slightly cold and worthless in the wet. So, hard to hammer on the T coming out of a sharp turn bc the back end breaks loose (bc of the phenomenal torque) and the traction control comes on.
@diegodivers
@diegodivers 3 ай бұрын
Interesting. Mine was delivered with Goodyear F1. In wet and cold conditions I made a similar experience. The tires were quite unpredictable and tend to loose grip all of sudden, especially in tight corners (no ras). I am quite sure that I will change them very soon for the Michelins. There should be less sound from tire roll with the french rubbers, as I heard.

Thanks! My hope is never to have to make that choice bc they are both so good 😄 But…if I could keep only one I would likely keep the T because it has greater utility meaning is easier to daily drive, run errands in, etc. I dailied my Spyder all spring and summer and it was GREAT but climbing in and out of the buckets got old. If you’re asking for a model to model comparison (not my specific 981 Spyder example vs my specific T) I can’t answer that yet. I need to live with the T longer. I absolutely love my Spyder. Love it. I feel it’s one of the most under appreciated modern Porsche by much of the Porsche community.

I’m on my 3rd 911 which is a 2023 Carrera T. I’ve also had an 1986 944 (262+K miles) 2008 M3 manual, 2018 M550 & 2019 M5 Competition. I didn’t spec my Carrera T but took ownership when the original customer backed out. I would say the car is what I expected, biggest disappointment is the base stereo. I had the base in my 991.1. (Other 911’s I ordered) and it was fine, but I intend on doing an aftermarket swap on the stereo. I probably will also do a tune to increase the horsepower and may also put larger turbos on it from Flat Six Motorsports. I will say I am happy to have front axle lift on the car.

Exhaust note is underwhelming because the exhaust valves partially close between 1-4k rpm even with PSE set to ‘on’ in order to meet sound regulations. M-Engineering can fix this for you by making PSE a true on/off button. They throw in GTS power and eliminate cold start and stop/start for free. 😃

It’s not that the base 992 doesn’t have enough power, but that the rest of the car is so overbuilt/overengineered that it makes the driving experience feel a bit soulless/dead.
