The Ugly Truth About Boxster Ownership: You're Gonna Get Hate From 911 Owners.

It's time to talk about something that pisses Boxster owners off: 911 owners who ridicule the Boxster/Cayman and the ones who simply ignore these cars and the people who drive them.
I asked the Porsche community to tell me what's going on with this aspect of Boxster ownership and I got some fascinating information. Some Boxster and Cayman owners don't care while others lashed out at the 911 people, saying that without the mid-engine cars Porsche wouldn't exist.
In the world of Porsche culture, Boxster ownership is a mixed bag. There are staunch supporters of the mid-engine Boxster and Cayman, there are those who can't stand 911 snobs and those (like me) who own mid engine cars that park alongside a 911 in the garage.
So, is the joy of Boxster ownership worth all of the grief that owners can get?
You can be the judge of that.

This is hilarious. I've owned a Boxster and when I drove a 991, I felt it drove almost identical to my Boxster. It was then I realized a Boxster is 80% identical to a 911 except the engine and transmission positions are simply reversed and the throttle actuator is smaller on the Boxster.

The only shade I ever get, as a launch year 986 owner, is from non P-car owners. People who haven’t experienced the brand but have opinions on it don’t matter to me. If you own a p-car, cool, your opinion is valid, if not, keep walking 🤣👍 I’ll add to this One personal opinion. If your friends or car guy group look down on your car, you need new friends or a new car group. Doesn’t matter what car you’re driving if you’re part of a passion. They need to respect that. That goes for Porsche as well as any other brand. Some people in the car community can be toxic and there needs to be more of a bro code because most non-car people hate all of us. 👍

I’m a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 owner, plenty of P cars of all vintages here in the Bay Area. Owners sometimes hang out with other owners who have similar vintage cars. But I usually get a nice comment because of the 4.0 engine and the FrozenBerry Metallic color. I could care less what anyone thinks of my car, I love driving her and that’s what matters

Transitioned from 981 Cayman S to 992 Carrera GTS. Both manual. I loved the smaller size of Cayman and mid-engine handling. 911 bigger but shrinks around you as you get to know it. Power of GTS is unreal, but also miss naturally aspirated Cayman engine. Love all Porsches. My experience has been that it is typically non-Porsche owners that judge based on cost from a spectator position, rather than true enthusiasts and owners of the marque.

Yes, I have experienced this. Not much, but it exists. My first Porsche was a Boxster. I sold it to buy a 911 (997.2 C2S 6M), which was awesome. But I sold that too, to buy another Boxster (981 GTS). Which I love even more. So I’m in the “They’re all good - shut up and drive” camp!

This overall is such a good conversation to have and you really could go into the weeds. I have a 987CS and it's my first Porsche. I was parking at a Cars & Coffee and a nice Air-Cooled parked next to me. We were close, when I got out, I was just checking my door and the guy in the 911 asked very rudely, "Did you hit my f*cking car?" Screw you man! I care about my car just as much as you care about your car. I don't know if I'll ever get anymore more than this and I feel like it's a reward for my hard work. I can respect your car, but please respect mine. I'm glad you're in a higher social-economic bracket than me. Perhaps someday I'll get there, but for now I'm happy and I love what my P-car does for me. I wouldn't trade it for yours. To piggy-back on this, I see the all the mechanical issues that go along with m9X engines and I wonder why there's not more cost-effective solutions. Why is PCA not actively working to find solutions? Guess what community, if you kill access to affordable cars, you will slowly kill interest in your community. There needs to be access. I'm not advocating that it's a gimme or easy, just saying that it needs to be there. If you're not bringing new blood in, then what happens as the old guard passes? If we all love these cars as much as we say we do. If we're truly passionate about what these cars can do. Then we need to support all of them and find ways to keep them around. It'll be a sad day when m9X-engined vehicles disappear. Show me a modern Porsche with more curves than a 987 Cayman. Truly beautiful!

I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s watching racing with my dad. Porsche 911’s were winning races. There were no Caimens or Boxters at the time. I wanted a 911. I had a 911 poster on my bedroom wall. After graduating in 82, Alpine Porsche had a radio sales event where they advertised a “drive a Porsche” event. My girlfriend at the time and I got in the car and drove up and there was no way they were going to let some kid drive a new 911. The oldest 911 on the lot was a 1970 and they gave me the chance to drive it, after some begging on my part. That drive changed my life. I knew I was going to own a 911. Fast forward 30 years with wife and kids. My wife and I were having one of our cars, a Cayenne, serviced and they were out of Cayennes and they gave us a Caimen for the day. So we drove it up Pikes Peak and had an absolute blast in that car. The handling was magnificent and I dint think it was any slower than the 997 S I drove up a few years earlier. Also a loaner. I bought a 911 after the kids were out of college and that’s the car I always wanted. But I think the younger generations may well want the mid engined cars over the 911, just because they are exposed to them. I think they also need to see them winning races. I like both the Caimen and Boxter, but those are not the cars I wanted growing up. I think when we older 911 diehards are gone, there will be less bias against the mid engined cars.

To anyone thinking about a used 911, I will offer the following suggestion/recommendation: Go and test drive some used Caymans as well. I have found that each generation Cayman is just as capable, and just as enjoyable, as the previous generation’s 911, Especially when you compare the 987 Cayman to the 996, or the 981 Cayman to the 997. If you can live without a sunroof, and without that “briefcase compartment” that Porsche calls a back seat, then the Cayman can offer more pure sports car value than an older 911 in the same price range can…JMHO
@user-qw5fl9dw6k
@user-qw5fl9dw6k 2 ай бұрын
True. To go one step further, often comparison within a single generation actually favors Boxster/Cayman. For example, over less than perfect tarmac, I find the ride and handling of a 987.2 significantly better than that of a 997.2. It's just physics, 997's employed a very stiff rear suspension to keep the heavy tail in check.

Great video, Will. I recently sold my 1992 964 to buy a 2016 CGTS. Years ago I had the opportunity to drive everything at the Porsche Barber Motorsports school and fell in love with the Cayman. It isn’t a 911, but the Cayman driving experience from behind the wheel is what sold me. And I made enough on the trade to upgrade to the Musicar Stage 3 audio upgrade. I’m a mid-engine lover and I actually use the radio too - should I just go ahead and cancel my PCA membership now? Always love your content and presentation!

The 911 is the definitive Porsche. That said, there is more than enough room for all the other Porsche's, whether they're the older front engined 944/928's, the SUV/CUV's like the Cayenne/Macan or the mid engine Boxster/Cayman's. They're all great cars and I embrace both them and their owners. In fact, I've owned most of them myself and enjoyed them all.

Bought a brand new 986 Boxster S back in its second year of production; 2001. It was my first foray into the Porsche world. Traded in a ‘99 C5 for it. The experience was night and day. Loved both but for obviously different reasons. I was living in San Antonio at the time and was driving west down Loop 410 Highway. Was following too closely to the car ahead. It rear ended the car ahead of it and my instinctive reaction was to swerve into the right lane to avoid a chain reaction collision. By the time I turned the steering wheel the car was already making the turn. Was lucky to avoid a potential collision. Chalk it up to the mid engine dynamics and/or the telepathic steering response but it was then and there that I understood what they meant by “Porsche, there is no substitute”. My 986 saved me. I got into other cars afterwards like a 7 series and AMG E63 but eventually got back into a Porsche. Currently the steward of a 993 C(2)S

I guess it depends on how the current 911 owners came into the brand. Those who first bought Boxsters/Caymans (then transitioned to the 911) probably won't have any animus towards them. However, those who jumped directly into 911's might. But, at the end of the day, I think the brand is exceptional, regardless of which model. Yes, some models have known issues, but the same could be said for pretty much every manufacturer...

While it was the 911 that began my love of the brand at age 5 back in 1970, the first Porsche I ever imagined owning was the Boxster, which I fell in love with when it was introduced as a concept, and smitten with when the first test drives from R&T, C&D, Automobile and Sports Car Int'l arrived. My switch to a plan to buy a Cayman when at NORAD, turned back to a Boxster plan after driving both- soft top or no top was far more enjoyable than the frenetic cabin of the Cayman for easy driving. That plan turned into a Cayenne with the arrival of my son and need for more seats. Now the owner of a 991.2 911 Turbo Cab, I'd never be hating on any Porsche and especially not Boxster drivers. Anyone who has ever driven or knows anything about the Boxster, knows how fantastic the car is, that it has become an icon unto itself, and that it along with the Cayenne, saved the brand and made all that Porsche is today, possible.

Well, after having owned 10 different 911’s (4x964c2/C4/Turbo,1x 993C2, 2x 996C4/GT3, 2x 997C2/C2S) all of which besides the 996C4 were manual box cars, and had a beautiful manual CarreraT at the time the 992 came out in late 2019, I felt a little lost for what to do. I didn’t gel with the 992C2S and 992C4S I got to sample from My dealer and I didn’t like either the size of the car, the look of the rear end and neither fancied the style of the interior, especially the gear lever and the instrument cluster and all round just found the car a bit numb and clinical. Sound wasn’t on par with my CarreraT by a mile either. So what should I do? My T was getting a lot of use and I could just stick with it (pun intended😂), but had increasingly been feeling a bit bored with more or less the same iteration of car over the years, so I started eying the exotic Italian car dealers and had a go in a few prancing horses and raging bulls just to feel out my options in going forward. But had to stick with Porsche due to lacking dealer network as the nearest Ferrari/Lamborghini dealer was in a neighboring country and I just couldn’t see myself spending so much time and money on getting my cars in for service and since I always drive my cars a ton of miles so I was a bit worried about depreciation issues also. So I was growing tired of the 911 platform but couldn’t stomach the hassle of an Italian exotic. Then a picture of a brand new never before seen Porsche model was sent to me from a friend of mine. Ferrari layout, mid engine, big wing, rear wheel drive, naturally aspirated engine. So I jumped on the phone to my dealer and got my allocator this new GT Porsche never before to be seen and never to released again in another iteration. I now own what I consider to be the most fun Porsche ever made. @viola_gt4rs

I owned a 718 Cayman and I thought it was an amazing car. It was the car I could afford at the time and a great introduction to Porsche ownership. As suggested though, there is this part of you (at least for me) that always saw the pinnacle of Porsche ownership as being the 911. I remember as a kid dreaming of owning one someday, so even though I truly did love my Cayman, I knew personally, I hadn't reached my goal of owning a 911 yet- that piece was always in the back of my mind- like I haven't hit my goal yet. I live in Southern California, and I will say that Porsche enthusiasts in the area invite me on drives out to Palm Springs now that I have a 993 and 911T, when I only owned my 718 Cayman, there we no invites by the community coming my way.

I've owned my 911 for 31 years and been in PCA that long and NEVER heard any such criticism of other models. 914, 944 especially were always welcome and I've driven with excellent instructors that owned both as well as 911s and learned a lot from everyone, especially the 914 drivers. However I will say that my 981 Boxter GTS (manual x73) is the best all around sports car in the history of sports cars. But I still enjoy my 911, ...a lot.

I think one area that the Boxster/Cayman comes out on top is the "fun factor". The combination of lightweight, mid-engine, combined to a Porsche flat 6 (and a convertable top in the case of Boxsters) is hard to beat. love both the 911 and the Boxster/Cayman platforms. That said I own a modded 02 3.2 liter 986 Boxster S, fitted with Fabspeed Exhaust, IPD Plenum/TB, Numeric Shifter etc etc... I wouldn't trade it for a modded 996 with the same level of modification for example.... although I'd still like to have that too; probably track it since it's a coupe 😂

I have had some 911 owners who have not been rude, but have been somewhat dismissive of me having a 981 Cayman GTS. Others have been totally friendly and welcoming. I chose the 981 because I enjoyed the driving experience and size more than a recent 911, which did not feel as nimble or quite as much of a sports car to me. Overall I have found true Porsche enthusiasts to be a great crew!

Had a 944, then a 986 base Boxster and now a 997S. Love them all. They all have their own special qualities. The only thing is that I found both the 944 and the Boxster underpowered but they fixed that now with the latest models. The truth is that people will never admire the Boxster as much as the 911 prestige wise because it is always seen as the entry level sports car. It’s the same with both models if you own the base Boxster or 911…owners of the S will think they are superior to you and so on. I had a guy at a stoplight ask me when I was in my Boxster, “why not the S?” 😁

I think it’s becoming more known now with Porsche doing ‘poor man’s 911’ ie lightened models with less power eg 992 Carrera T. Also I’ve noticed base models 981 perhaps because it’s lighter produces more average cornering g’s than the S or Gt4 models. There’s the lightened 981 Spyder as well. In a lot of these models you can get more performance just by selecting options such as light weight buck ts and Pccb. People should be less critical of the models of Porsches. There all great

The street-legal version (and some race versions) had the original “fried egg” headlights, that also draw scorn from some 911 owners. 2. It was actually more like a Boxster/Cayman than a 911 because Porsche engineers knew that its mid-engine layout gave performance/handling advantages.

The same is the case for those of us who are 928 owners. I’ve owned both the 911 and 928 and find the 928 a superior vehicle overall in comparison with 911’s of the same era. I loved my 911 but the 928 is a much better daily driver, more comfortable, and actually out handles a 911 due to the almost perfect 50/50 weight distribution. It’s a VERY underrated vehicle! I love both models but prefer the 928 overall.

At Lime Rock during ALMS racing, the pits are wide open to spectators. I took my time looking over the GT class 911's and guess what? They're Caymans with 911 bodies. Their excuse is that it is for aerodynamics but I'm well aware that the engine in front of the rear axle makes the weight bias so much better. The reason Porsche has kept the Cayman lower powered than the 911 is because if they were equal, the Cayman would trounce the 911 out on the road course.

I am an owner of a 2017 Cayman S and think there is a perspective that should unite the debate. Porsches are purpose built sports cars, all of them (excepting the incredible success of the Porsche SUVs). Unlike a BMW, that no matter how good it might be, is a modified sedan, Porsches are singularly built for performance. The Porsche Cayman continually performs at the top of its class, and though it is a sibling to the iconic 911, it is no less of a car. I have driven various 911 models at the Porsche Experience track, as well as various Cayman models, and they are both thrilling. I actually prefer my mid engine layout for the cabin, and I might get into a higher performance Cayman, but am not sure a 911 suits me. I have Porsche liners, nets, and tie downs in the frunk and hatch, and it is incredibly versatile in what you can haul. I don’t think I would ever use the wasted back seats of the 911. So if you have chosen to drive a Porsche, you recognize the quality and have made a wise decision in my mind, regardless of the model.

that's not true. We throw shade on overweight Macan owners who wear Porsche shirts. If a 911 owner throws shade on the Cayman/boxster, then THEY are the posers. It is hard not to respect the heck out of those tiny roadsters. And we'll miss them when we are all driving golf-carts.

Idea for a video, I was wondering what you think about the influencer/trust fund crowd moving from Lambos to 911s, Porsches used to fly under the radar but it seems like everyone wants one, and it did 2 things: priced out the cars for average enthusiasts, and turned them into status symbols rather than driving machines

I think Bring A Trailer played a huge role in there somewhere as well. Makes me sad that regular driving enthusiasts have been pushed out of many brands and models that used to be within reach. Too easy for a drunk rich dude to bid up an SC to $70K that used to be $30K before the pandemic and before BaT got really big.

If you grew up always wanting a 911, and then bought a 718, you settled (for whatever reason). I settled when I bought my first Porsche, a 944,; I grew up obsessing over 911s. If you discovered Porsche as an adult and gravitated toward a 718 for its own virtues, then congratulations on owning a dream car. It's all about where you started the journey. For me, anything other than a 911 was settling. I've owned 2 (still have one of them) and now I'm considering a 718 as a daily driver and am looking for a good quality 944 to add to my collection. Our PCA group supports and encourages everyone, no prejudice or shaming here (even toward the Cayenne and Macan owners).

My PTS GT4 was more expensive than a lot of 911s. I have both a 718 GT4 manual and a 992 GTS cab PDK and love them both in different ways and for different reasons. Very different experiences, which is why I like the combo. I get it, though, because I admit I do turn my nose up at the SUVs, even the Turbo GT.

I’ve been owning 911 variants since the early 80’s. I admit to having looked down on the Boxster when it first came out. That viewpoint was based in ignorance. I’ve since owned and sold 3 Boxster variants and 1 Cayman. They are absolutely brilliant cars. I am a driving enthusiast with 20 years of track experience mostly in a converted 986 Boxster S race car. Wow is this a brilliant chassis! I still am a diehard 911 fan, owning a 993, but I’d love to add another Boxster to my garage some day. It’s really the perfect sports car!

At least in our PCA world, some Porsche owners may have 911s, Boxsters, AND Caymans, frequently the latter are their track vehicles. I've owned all three. A 987 Cayman was my first Porsche and the best car I ever owned, my 718 Boxster S served me well for 7 years when I was leading our drive and dine committee (no better spring, early summer or early fall sports car, though on rainy days I wished I had a Cayman), and now I love my 992 Carrera T. All great examples of what Porsche can do. The Boxster and Cayman are the best handling Porsches, period, but I will admit the unique driving aspects of the 911 (probably less so now than in the past when it was even more rear-weight-biased), when you adjust to them in autocross, make you a better driver. I only wish I had autocrossed the Cayman and Boxster when I had them. To be honest, the only people I see that denigrate the mid-engine Porsche platforms as somehow lesser Porsches are west coast people and the British car media. And maybe Porsche themselves for a long time, trying to deliberately keep the 987/981/718 platform from being faster and more capable than the 911, at least until the GT4 was introduced. I think the GT4 RS changed a few peoples' minds, though. And to be honest, it was much easier getting an allocation for a Carrera T than a 718 GTS 4.0.

I have a 996.2 911 (that I love) and was told by someone (by their own admission) who has never owned/driven a Porsche, that it wasn't a real 911 because of the headlights. I then said (among other things), "So I suppose you're one of those knobs that reckon a Boxster/Cayman isn't a real Porsche either?" He said, "No they're not." I was going to suggest that he should perhaps at least drive one, or both, before having an opinion. I thought better of it. Why waste your time with an oxygen thief? "I said, "Good talk mate, see ya." I'd have either in a heartbeat. I've driven quite a few Boxster's and there's plenty to love. Haters gonna hate.

At least the 911 crew grudgingly acknowledges Boxster/Cayman models as Porsches. Show up to the Cars and Coffee Porsche section in a Panamera/Taycan/Macan/Cayenne and they will tell you to park with the general public. I used to have a 991 Carrera S and the GT3/GT3RS crew would look down on my car as well. Human nature shows us that everyone needs someone to feel superior to, I guess.

I'd be interested in seeing how it plays out when we separate out people who bought a 911 because it's a good car and who bought a 911 as a status symbol. I'm guessing those who have a 911 because it's a great driver's car and not as a status symbol don't look down at the Cayman/Boxster crowd as much. Either way, I'm excited for my Cayman to arrive (less than 2 months!). I'm not worried if others turn their nose up to it.

There is a song called “Jesus is a Capricorn” that contains the lyric “Everybody needs somebody that they can look down on.” That mindset might apply to this situation. If I thought owning a 911 would bring me more joy, I would consider buying one.

The 718 spyder broke the world’s record for cones/handling. A 911 could not ever do so regardless of modification or investment. Mid engine is superior to rear engine for quite a few things. It just is hampered by slow, horrible tire technology and am the issue of cooling location. 911 is fast due to friction force on the rear wheels + poor current tire technology.
