FYI - I finally got around to doing this project on my '04. I was surprised to find the engine mount plate is also attached to the motor mounts under the engine hood too. Even tho I used hose clamps for both the 2 inch hose and the 1 inch hose, about 2 - 2.5 gallons of anti-freeze drained from the engine block through the water pump outlet/inlet. Another quart came out of the 2 inch hose. Thank you so much for this video...I was able to see the potential issues I may gave unknowingly faced had I tried this blind.

There are seven bolts holding the water pump, but there is an additional bolt very close to the lower three bolts that isn't for the water pump. The one you want is tucked way up into a little crevice about two inches from the bottom-most bolt, on the RIGHT side.. I was BARELY able to get it out; no way any of my sockets would fit. I had to use an open ended spanner to loosen it, (from underneath the car) and at that point, even flipping the spanner back and forth, there wasn't enough room to fit it to the flats on the bolt. I don't know how this guy got it out, but the way I did it was (once I'd cracked it free) to reach one hand through the engine compartment and the other hand all the way under the car and up; then with one finger of each hand I was able to back it out - taking about three breaks to rest. (It's super awkward) If you pull out that one bolt that isn't for the pump, you'll know it, because it's only about an inch long, and the one you want is one of the two longer ones - about an inch and a quarter.

Thanks, Michael! I have a 997 and am only replacing the t-stat with the low temp t-stat from FCP. Should have it next week. I have not seen any videos for doing the t-stat only. I'm assuming it will be a bit easier and maybe I won't have to r&r the exhaust hanger and mount at the rear of the engine. Don't really know as I haven't looked it over yet. Can you give me any advice or tips before I dive in? Thanks! PS...nice shoes!

what other hoses did you crack open to drain the coolant so the Airlift2 could work?

Hi Stephen, nothing further during this job. You can go further up front and undo the lines under the car to the rads and drain those as well, just remember to hook them all back up before trying to pull vacuum!

Awesome video. Weighing my cost options DIY or local Porsche mechanic. Does the airlift II system fit the coolant system reservoir top or do I need to buy a separate cap?
@fcpeuro2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ed, the cone-shaped end on the tool does indeed fit snug into the coolant reservoir, no additional fitting is needed. I would recommend removing the 10mm nut that holds the tank in place so you can move the tank away from the body of the car a bit so you can squeeze that tool in, it's a tight fit!

I just used this vid to replace my water pump. Mr. Raby does not approve of the metal impeller. I did not use a metal impeller. You might augment with a hot take on that. I forgot why Raby doesn't like it. I think it's because if it fails, it's a way more serious failure than a plastic impeller failure, because the impeller can grind down the block.

Why did you support the engine? The engine mounts are not loosened in this procedure.
@fcpeuro Жыл бұрын
Hi Sportbiker; you need to support the engine as the rear engine brace is being separated from the block, which is what the mounts are attached to.

I lo ve your videos, I have just replaced my alternator, starter motor, water coolant tank, idle pulleys, water pump and thermostat on my 2001 996 Cab, using your videos as a guide, (the alternator had failed and the coolant tank was leaking, but everything else was working fine, but all were original (I have owned the car since new) so thought I would replace them while I had the car in pieces. What are your thoughts on replacing coolant hoses at the same time as water pump? I have replaced the water pump and the thermostat but have not yet refilled the car with new coolant. The hoses seem fine, they are soft and flexible with no bulges or cuts but should I replace them anyhow? If so what are the part numbers? And are there any other hoses that I should also replace? Thanks
@fcpeuro2 жыл бұрын
Nice work Shane, happy to hear the videos were of some help! If the hoses appear to be in fine shape, you should be alright to reuse them. On our 99' our 3-way hose (99610685005) that goes from the tank to the pump was showing some cracks, so we replaced that in between shoots. All of the hoses are available on FCPeuro.com however should you want to replace any others. The other item which you may want to consider replacing while the system is empty if you haven't already is 99610622652.

I found 10 (TEN) clips where mechanics posted video's replacing waterpumps on the Porsche. Benefical for them in workshours claimed ($$) and Porsche ($$), if they order a pump there. Why 10 videos? Instead of 0? Think about that! My statment: Outright lousy quality. Cheaply manufactured in Asia(?) and stamped Porsche. There are so many more reliable cars you can buy.... Take my daughters Alto. 400.000 km's (!) Hear you thinking... Yes! Every km is true! ) The same pump! Incredible! Poor, poor Max Verstappen, if Porsche is gonna built his engine in future....he can forget his world-championship.
