A good trick I've learnt is to tape the wire to a zip tie and use that to push/pull it through the grommet. Having something that's pointy, and rigid yet bendable, makes it a lot easier to poke through.

Top tip for accessing engine bay is instead remove the "carpet" behind the rear seats and most of the engine electrics and fuses are located to alu bracket. Its a completely "spongy" part so no risc of damage the car interior.

Little tip for you. You should be able to change the splash screen to be whatever you want. We installed the same head unit on my Dad’s 2001 Audi A6 and the factory logo on the splash screen made it look completely stock.

Looks good Jeff. I have a similar system (Sony XAV-AX1000) that I installed in my '04 Outback. Transforms the car with radio, my iTunes library and GPS from the Apple CarPlay. It makes the car look more modern too. I haven't got around to installing the reverse camera yet, too many internal panels :)

Sorry Jeff, this one was a little painful to watch. Owning a car stereo shop for 25+ years I can tell you for sure that a simple harness adapter would have cut you wiring time down to about 5 minutes, although that would have been a bit boring to watch. :)

I couldn't get one when I needed it and the wiring was quick and easy, it was the stupid reversing camera that was the issue ;)
@1one3_Racing4 жыл бұрын
Alternative to an adaptor plug, i used to use bootlace ferrules. Crimp them on to the Sony harness and they plug in ti the factory plug. If you dont have the correct tool, grind the very point off the cutting face off some side cutters and use those. Second, I could have figured out the wiring harness with a battery and test light faster than you could have googled it!
@1one3_Racing4 жыл бұрын
I used to HATE going into a car that someone else had worked on and soldered behind the factory plug like this. Once you cut out the superfluous wiring you were left with sharp little stiff wires that would pierce insulation tape and short out!
@Mrcaffinebean4 жыл бұрын
s stanford I agree however sometimes you just need to get a job and I’m sure you’ve seen much worse jobs. The previous owner of my Range Rover. Cut the factory plugs off entirely and taped and twisted al the wiring together. It was a total wreck.
@1one3_Racing4 жыл бұрын
@@Mrcaffinebean best I ever saw was stripped wires held together with blu-tack. Not even twitched. I saw sticky tape used several times to hold bare wires and the amount of times I saw stereos grounded through to illumination wire. They couldn't work out why they were blowing fuses when they turned the lights on.
@neilb60294 жыл бұрын
Silicone spray lubricant works wonders for getting wires through grommets. The Supercheap silicone spray also evaporates away reasonably quickly so you are not left with sticky residue that might attract dust. It is also good for lubricating plastic pop panels so they go in nicely. Also I think you have labelled your engine wiring with Dyno tape? I have found that dyno tape turns brown when in warm environments (though it could have been cheap stuff). When I did installation work, I used to write directly on the heat shrink, then just shrink it down. You could then use clear heatshrink over the top to protect it from fading.

Hi Jeff, I really like watching your facial expressions as you're working it's interesting, especially when you're dealing with something difficult. Never did like car radios, I had an E Type and a couple of other old Jags back in the 70's and 80's, loved the sound so much I removed the radios so they didn't interfere with the exhaust note.

You could have used a metal coat hanger by making a specific shape you need. Then tape the the wire and feed it through the grommet. Most audio shops in middle east use tgus method and it works everytime

Coat hangar wire through the grommet from the inside, lots of insulation tape to connect the RCA to the coat hangar wire, pull it back through. If you can, pull the grommet out and cut an X in it, refit it and then pull the wire through. Also, get Mrs Jeff to do it. Women have small hands and can achieve great things working on auto electronics!

Maybe installing that microphone in one of the three blank buttons on the right of the stereo, drilling one of those blank black buttons, and hot glueing the microphone from the inside, would have been nicer, more OEM looking.

The final result looks great. Relocating the climate control module looks weird (to me) but is a great solution. You even managed to omit the CD holder. 😀 Did I miss the reversing camera display demo? Where is the monitor located. Speaking of foam; those pesky bits of foam coming out of the air vents will be appearing FOREVER! 😫 What year model is the 996? Pre 2001 steering wheel and post 2001 tail lights. 😊

The PCCM+ system was actually easier than this and looks factory... because it is. It does not have back up functionality as far as I know but if you can't reverse your 996 you probably shouldn't be driving. Next is wireless charging from rennline and a wireless android auto solution.

Hows this for a hack Plasti dip . . . Well what do ya recon?😎 I'll explain eh. Start with a bit of history. Plasti dip started life as a "liquid plastic dip" for tools such as pliers etc that had lost or warn through their plastic covers on the handle. This not only brought grip back to the handle but acts as a electric insulator (as it is plastic . . .see where I'm going with this) so with those connections you cant get heat shrink to spray plasti dip into the lid of the can and use a brush and brush it on the exposed wire. Not only will it be water tight but it will be tidier than electrical tape and insulate the wire from shorting out.

Porsche 911 is not a male. It’s got a lovely smile, sexy ass and it requires a bit skill to handle. It also gives pleasure like no other. It is a female car. If you dont believe me go ask Lightning McQueen if his gf is a boy. Now, if you are into males, you pick a Vette, Viper, Daytona or if you are happy with a smaller muscles and tool a 240Z with their long erected hoods, low voices and predictable easy direct handling. Call the beauties Harry and Archie and they sure will do what Jeremy Clarkson says - sit in the garage thinking many ways to kill you. Dont say you were not warned.
