It's probably a very very unpopular opinion but this spec 996(early model but without the orange turn signals)is my all time favorite 911 besides the 993 and pre 1970s short wheelbase ones.

Through the front sides what you see are the ac condensers, the radiators are behind them. To clean them properly you'll need to take the bumper off and get between them. I have this model, it's a really fun car to drive. Great series Jeff, inspired me to do some of the outstanding things that my car needs done.

I’ve got a 987 Boxster with basically the same motor. I had IMS fear too and eagerly cut my filter open when I changed the oil. I saw two minuscule specs of metal on the filter so don’t think there’s anything to worry about. I also sent my oil off to Nulon for analysis and it came back with a perfect report. Stress over

I just found out the hard way but in the 996.1 they had a recall on the brake booster as they filled with water once the drain holes blocked inside the plenum chamber. Check the drain holes if you haven't already. Mine just failed due to being water logged. The fix is to replace the entire brake push rod assembly as well as the updated booster as they don't make the old ones anymore. There is a Tech bulletin on it but it's a real pain so definitely check it as it's your daily. Cheers

Great video Jeff! I personally use 50 weight oil year-round as I live in the Caribbean (85-100 F avg) and the car sees mainly city traffic, but that grade sometimes is hard to find. In fact, 40 weight oil is also getting hard to find as well as most cars nowadays use 20 and 30 weight. The cabin air filter should have a foam shroud on top of it, mainly to keep water out that may leak between the gasket on the cowl cover and the windshield. Lastly, on the engine air filter, I used K&N in the past. The sound is amazing but switched away from them as I was finding really fine dust inside the plenum. I just went back to OEM.

Re the IMS bearing wear, you should get a Durametric OBD scanner and measure the cam timing variance. Changing the IMS is not too hard when you have a lift, I have done 3 at home. I used the LN Engineering, but the oil fed solid bush versions look interesting. Changing the splark plugs is straightforward, but you need to pull the mufflers off. Thats about half a dozen bolts per side and maybe 15 mins. I can do the whole job in less than 2 hours now. Good idea to check the coil packs for cracking, they usually last less than 100k km and then they start to misfire.

Great video Jeff, 996s are just a beast aren't they? Did you happen to check the oil pan for glitter as well? Mine had a few very small sparkly bits in it after 3600km, so I had the oil analysed and it passed with flying colors. Its a 996.2 with 69K on it.

Michelin's are the best! Good choice...I bet most people re-use the drain plug drain washer especially when they are like $5 plus each....I sometimes use teflon tape...don't tell anyone...

I don't know why anything other than the heat shields on the valve covers and the individual coils needs to be removed to access spark plugs. I have never had to remove the rear bumper, mufflers or anything else on a 996 to replace the spark plugs. A high quality magnetic spark pug socket such as Hazet, Mac or Span On does make life easier, however

Great result with the oil filter dissection Jeff, that Intermediate Shaft bearing failure possibility is something to be taken seriously. Did you check your transmission oil levels this service?

I did an oil change on my Alfa Romeo 147 recently and I didn't have a fresh crush washer for the sump plug either. Sure enough a few days later I noticed an oil leak from the sump plug. Rather than dump all my fresh oil, I did a Google search and found this crazy video kzbin.info/www/bejne/n3yUiniCm6mFaM0. By jamming a shop vacuum nozzle into the oil filler in the top of the engine (and switching the vacuum on) you can generate enough negative pressure inside the engine to allow you to remove the sump plug, change the crush washer and refit the plug without even a drop of oil draining out of the sump. I initially thought it was a prank video, but it actually works.

@@truthseeker8483 actually, I thought that would happen as well, but it didn't. I used a shop rag to jam the vacuum nozzle into the oil filler... no oil on the shop rag at all.

Do you have 8"/10" wheels? What tyre sizes did you go with? I wanted to get PS4s, but found that the rear 285/30 size I wanted didn't exist... At the moment I have 235/40 PS4 front and 285/30 PS2 rear, but I am still looking for some kind of improvement on that... You'll want to take off the front bumper and loosen the front coolers, a lot of leaves and gunk gets caught in between the cooler and the condenser. Btw: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXyWY2yVgs2Aq68
