Have you had a Euro Delivery? If so please share your experience with us also.

I had a couple European deliveries over the decades. First in 1977 and much later in 2006. It became complicated by my insistence upon a Paint To Sample order for my cabriolet. Look for my article in PCA’s Panamera Feb 2008 issue. Don’t be afraid to try some off the wall places! I was all over Austria, Germany, Switzerland and even as far south as below Salerno, Italy. But keep in mind that the demographics of Germany keeps changing. Many Germans see Porsches as a waste of money, and they are considered impractical. In fact, you rarely see Porsches when you’re outside of about 100 km’s of Zuffenhausen. Today, it’s not unusual to have your vehicle damaged by Germans within 100 miles of the factory by who knows who. Of course, the factory will always deny any knowledge of such things as they don’t want to dampen the ED experience-and try not to let it bother you either. It’s just a car and it can be fixed quite easily. I also carried a bra with me for use in Europe. Check weather conditions in advance and do not make airline reservations or hotel reservations until you have the Checkpoint 9 or delivery date confirmed. Keep in mind that ED rules change constantly. What you could do in the 1980s or even in 2010 changes all the time. There are so many variables that go into the assembly of a Porsche that frankly it’s amazing at all that you can plan a European vacation around a Porsche delivery! Your results may vary!

Extremely interesting to hear both recent and historical euro delivery experiences. Hearing about Alan's patience and how that was rewarded was PRICELESS! Next time i see Alan, i want to hear the extended version. Thanks for sharing Dan and Alan! Great stuff.

I’ve done a couple of Zuffenhausen Euro Deliveries over the decades. In fact, they were decades apart-1977, and 2006. Things change constantly with Porsche and these orders and deliveries. My 1977 was quite simple because I was already living within an hour of the factory. In 2006 my order was much more complex with a Paint To Sample order. That, itself, delayed the order to the point that from the initial order to delivery, it was about 9 months. Having been a Porsche customer for 5 decades, you learn that you just have to put up with the way they do things. The usual routine is for most to stay in Europe for two weeks but you can lengthen it provided that you extend your insurance, etc. My insurance company can underwrite in Europe so that is a new change since 2006, when you were forced to use their underwriters . Germany has changed a lot over the years and most Americans don’t understand that it n e you are about 100 km’s from Stuttgart, you just don’t really see many Porsches. Even Germans think of Porsches as a waste of money and impractical. Thus, you stand out. I traveled through Austria, Switzerland and Italy, despite some warnings about things in Italy. If you stay at decent locations you don’t have to worry about the car. I went well into Italy-past Amalfi, Positano and Salerno. Sadly, the demographics of Germany has changed and your car may not be safe 100 miles from Zuffenhausen. A knowledge of German is handy, but not necessary. Keep your credit card out for the many tolls on the Italian Autostrata. Chose the time of year carefully for mountain pass weather conditions. Do not make airline and hotel or gasthaus reservations until you absolutely have a locked in delivery date. Porsche used to offer two “grand tour” events during the year-one in late May and the other in September-in which you’re treated to more treats from the Porsche. From additional cocktail parties and dinners to hot laps at Weissach, it’s worth checking out. I wrote a detailed account of my experiences for the PCA monthly magazine, Panorama, in their February 2008 issue. . Your experience may vary.

Excellent information. Thank you. Wow, quite the experiences you e had over the years. They all sound so memorable. I’ll have to check out the PCA article. I keep saying some day. Perhaps next time. My wife won’t do it as she is not a fan of fast cars or curvy roads. I think it would be a guy road trip. I’m sure I could coax someone into it. Cheers!

While I've never been fortunate to do a Porsche European Delivery, I can relate to many of the same discussion points in this video based upon both my Volvo and BMW ED experiences. It certainly IS key that you work with a dealer who is very familiar with the ED process for your manufacturer. Ask your salesperson how many ED sales they've made and when. As one speaker said, it's also good to establish contact with the manufacturers U.S. based ED office as they have the latest info about any vehicle availability issues, plant shutdowns etc. It is more complicated to coordinate all aspects and you don't want to deal with a novice. In regards to the vehicle drop-off process when you're ready to head home, I was told by both Volvo (2005) and BMW (2014) that your vehicle must be relatively clean or you could face delays at U.S. Customs so we always identified a quick car wash location before vehicle drop-off. As for items left in your car at drop-off...for our BMW, I'd told the folks at LoginOut at the Munich airport drop-off location that I had window cleaner and some microfibre clothes in the car that they could keep....but surprisingly, they were still in the vehicle upon re-delivery at BMW Spartanburg ! I'd say DEFINITELY consider European Delivery if you have any interest in a European vacation experience of a lifetime! Too bad BMW cancelled their program a year or so ago.....

Hi Miata13. Thanks for watching. You bring up important points about the coordinate at ion and planning for Euro delivery. Perhaps one day, once all the supply chain and pricing madness settles down, will I attempt for a new Porsche. 🤞🏻

Great video. We are picking up a Turbo S in June at Leipzig. We are from Indiana and would like some input on where Dan stayed for lodging? We have travelled Europe in the past and enjoyed B&B and VRBO but have been warned that may not be as safe as a hotel for the car. Do you have any input on your experiences with lodging and protecting the car from theft or damage. We are planning to travel through Southern Germany, Switzerland, Austria possibly a little of Northern Italy. We love the mountain pass roads and prefer not to spend time in the cities. I appreciate the input.

Now many of the European Manufacturers have stopped EDE the only ones doing it now are Volvo,MB,Porsche.

Thanks for sharing. I would love to do ED one day.

Many cars like MB and BMW are no longer made in Germany that is why ED is not possible. Especially true for the SUVs, they are made in the US.
