The McLaren F1 was never built as a race car first and then to be sold as a road car second. It was a road car built to the best specification possible and to therefor have capabilities to exceed GT race cars of the day by simply being built without compromise. I think both Ron Dennis and Gordon Murray said the race car wasn't an option and had to be persuaded to start the race car program after the cars had been built. Cars like the Merc CLR GT1 were race cars converted for the road - and bloody ugly and crap it is too !

That Merc is one ugly car - race or road, its ugly. Classic case of race car first, road car second. The genius with the F1 is that its a beautiful road car first, that also kicks the other race cars into touch. When they started playing with the F1 to make it a better race car, you got the Long Tail - uglier, but a better race car. But yes, even the ugly Merc is a fine bit of engineering. Great find! A testament to what both manufacturers can do, but Porsche can still do it a bit better in my opinion due to the fact they use only 6 cylinders. Both of these race cars are legendary champions!
@ZKozak-hp5vb10 жыл бұрын
Porsche was turbocharged, 3.2L vs naturally aspirated 6.1L v12 of the mclaren. Forced induction increases the displacement (14.7psi = 1 bar air pressure at sea level)…I don't know the amount of boost the Porsche had, but multiply 3.2 x (boost/ 14.7) and you get the displacement…14.7 is quite low, and would double the displacement (thus 6.4L)…that's how naturally aspirated vs turbocharged/ supercharged works. It's displacement, not cylinder count.
@davisdegarbo10 жыл бұрын
Forced induction does not increase displacement! It stresses the engine to produce the output of a larger engine without adding the extra size and mass of a large displacement engine. In this case you are getting double duty out of each cylinder because it is compared to an engine with double the amount of cylinders.
@ZKozak-hp5vb8 жыл бұрын
A 4 liter, 4 stroke engine will go through the equivalent of 1L per stroke, the volumetric mass is 14.7 lb/in for air at sea-level (1 bar). The CFM is what matters, if the CFM of a turbo is rated as the same as the engine, the engine is this receiving twice the volume of air, and fuel. The displacement that engine goes through is thus double, if twice as much air and fuel is being forced into it. It doesn't mean twice the cylinders, it means twice the displacement. There are 1.5L 4 cylinder cars, and 1.5L V12 Ferrari's in the early days of F1. Why do you think all of these modern turbo cars can't get real-world number to match their epa ratings? The engine is more stressed, and the effect of adding a higher volume of air into the engine effectively means you need more fuel to maintain ~12-1 A:F ration. This isn't taking into account the added heat-loss turbo's have over N/A engines (the Bugatti Veyron engine actually 4,000 hp, 2,000 lost in heat - hence the 16 radiators, and 1,000 in friction).

1996 Porsche 911 GT1 LM and 1996 Mclaren F1 LM Short Tail. Up until this day these two cars costs millions of pounds and dollars! Each have a road version that costs millions. The 911 Strabenversion or street legal version, 25 of these where made has a tops speed of 378kph and 0-60 in 3.6 sec while the Mclaren LM Short Tail has 5, Mclaren F1 has 64, F1 GT has 2 and F1 GTR long tail has no road versions. Until now these will cost even more as these cars are legendary and a RARE SITE!

@mikeysavage90413 жыл бұрын
@@awakenedsoul2638 the GT1 was a homologation car that raced in GT1. The homologation rules allotted a minimum of 10 road cars that could be sold to customers. Porsche did the bare minimum and built 10 road cars. The Mclaren on the other hand was designed to be a road car. However the design was so good that the bosses decided to enter it into the GT1 american le mans series and it dominated the 1996 season.

@awakenedsoul26383 жыл бұрын
@James Wheeler I like the Mclaren F1 GTR Long Tail if I will choose a version of the F1 to own but in this race I choose Porsche 911 GT-1. This one have a road version also the 97 year model. I was a little bit disappointed that the 98 Le Mans 24 Hours winner was not given a road version for sale, only 1 piece for homologation following the rules before it can be entered in the race. I did not watch or did not have the chance to watch the full race of 95 - 99 Le Mans 24 Hours season to see how the F1, 911 GT1, CLK-GTR, NSX-GT1 and GT2, Skyline GTR-LM. R390 GT-1, Panoz Esperante GTR-1, Lister Storm V-12 and Toyota GT-One performed in the race. Mclaren only one it once during the 95 season and won a few races. 911 96 and 97 lost, Porsche was disappointed and got the win during the 98 season with the 911 98 year model. I am sure from 96 to 99 the F1 did not even finished the race from 1st to 10th place. The race is too much for it even if it was the fastest car during the 90's because there are many fast cars in the GT-1 Category. Funny that the BMW V-12 LMR won during 99 because Toyota just have a blown tire but if not because of the blown tire they should have won their first ever Le Mans 24 Hour race.
@awakenedsoul26383 жыл бұрын
@James Wheeler During the 90's if Toyota did not had such bad luck, quickly after the Mazda 787B won Le Mans 24 Hours in 91 the GT-One quickly became the second Japanese Car to win the famed and most prestigious Gran Tour Racing Le Mans 24 Hours. Yeah right 95 - 2000 was a legendary time for legendary cars to be born. Let me include the F-40 LM and GTE which actually entered the race from 92 to 96, correct me if this was a mistake. F-50 GT was made but was never entered in any race. A limited edition Ferrari that was a failure and wasted potential that was never used in a race. 1996 Lamborghini Diablo VT was modified by SAT from France and made the Diablo GT1. A naturally heavy super car weighing at 3,500 lbs. SAT reduced its weight to 2,200 lbs so it could comply to the regulations of the race in Le Mans. It has 655 HP but can be tuned more 755 once it enters the race. They replaced many parts with carbon fiber to make the car lighter, agile handling and faster acceleration and top speed. It was written in wikipedia that the F-50 GT could do 380 KPH and 0-60 in 3.1 to 3.2 while performance of the Diablo GT1 was not written but someone said it could do 0-60 in 2.7 to 3.0 flat. I am sure its top speed of 340 - 350 kph stock increased up to 380 - 390 same as the F-50 GT. If the Japanese never made a gentle man's agreement that they will never make high-performance sports cars that will have more than 300 HP but actually the skyline, Fair Lady Z 300ZX and Supra did, maybe Honda made an NSX that is more than 300 HP. Maybe Nissan made a skyline that is more than 330 HP also a 300 ZX more than 320 HP and Toyota made a Supra more than 350 HP. Honda made a GT-1 NSX but the real super cars that was entered in the race was too much for it to over take and leave behind similar to the situation of the Nissan Skyline GTR R33 which was a beast of a machine but was no match to the likes of the F1, F40, 911 GT1 and CLK-GTR. The NSX and Skyline suffered the same faith that is why these two only continued its campaign in the GT2 category until Honda and Nissan retired it racing in Le Mans. Then Nissan created the R390 GT1 with 2 homologation road car. Supra was entered in GT1 but Toyota never entered it in Le Mans GT1 only in GT2. The Supra GT-1 was entered in the Super GT of JGTC within only 2 years of its season where the JLOC Diablo raced. My point here is if these models/machines was not restricted by the gentleman's agreement similar to the gentleman's agreement of Suzuki and Kawasaki during the mid 2000's of their Ninja and Hayabusa, maybe the Supra, 300 ZX Fairlady Z, Skyline GTR R-33 and R34 and NSX will be better machines in the GT-1 Category. If only Honda Toyota and Nissan made these machine reach more than 350 HP or somewhere around 330 - 350 during its time. Maybe these machines will accelerate 0-60 in 4.0 - 4.5 seconds, the acceleration of an entry level super car during the 90's and 2000's. Let us not forget the Mazda RX-7, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Mitsubishi GTO, Subaru Impreza WRX and Tommy Kaira ZZII. If these cars have more than 330 HP in stock and was attempted to be entered in the GT-1 class this is an exciting race to watch. Let us not forget the Corvette Grand Sport ZR-1 and the winner of the GT2 class in Le Mans 24 Hours Dodge Viper GTS-R, a real super car, what if Dodge decided to race in the GT1 Class with their Viper. The F-50 GT and Diablo GT1 was a wasted potential. With all of these reasons I said. It will be an exciting race to watch.
