Porsche Panamera S Hybrid - Fifth Gear Web TV

If you need a big Porsche that's affordable to run, you now have two options -- there's a Panamera with a 3 litre diesel engine or this new petrol-electric S Hybrid, both of which will do over 40mpg. And whilst the hybrid has more power, the diesel is nearly £30,000 cheaper. If the aim is to save money then, should the hybrid even be considered? We decided to find out.

I just want to make something clear about the differnce between the hybrid and the diesel. When someone pays 90k for an hybrid sedan, he doesn't really care about mpg. What he wants is to green and diesels are the worts at that. Yes they consume less and yes they emit less CO2 but they emit a lot more of the other green house gases. That's why there so few hybrids in America. (There regulations are more strict for green house gases other than CO2.)

@GetTheGr33n Well, you are right, but Porsche needs these cars to survive. Porsche had money issues around 2000 and the Cayenne solved their money problems. Besides the Cayenne and the Panamera are still engineered by Porsche, and that means incredibly high quality and engineering. Porsches (every single model) are not just cars. :) Have a nice day :)

@SonicYouthXXX I think the point is that richer people afford to invest in more efficient technologies, that are expensive now because they're new. They afford to have principles, if you like. Where I live I've seen much more hybrid Lexuses and Porsches than Priuses. And I think that's because people who would normally buy such a big and expensive car in the first place can afford to pay some extra 30k to go hybrid - more often than people who would buy a Golf to pay some 10k more to buy a Prius

@42ph They contain relevant info as far as consumers are concerned. They want to know how much they should expect to pay for fuel in any given car. Yes, it might not be the most accurate form of measuring efficiency, but the only thing that matters to 99% of the population is how much they're going to have to pay at the pump.

Car prices in the U.K. are very low compared to Norway, it's a joke. An example: The Panamera 3.0 211HK diesel 2012 editiion: 141 978 pounds. The Suzuki Swift 1.2 GLX 2012: 17 387 pounds.

Infiniti M35 Hybrid is a great alternative to the Porsche Panamera Hybrid. The Infiniti can seat 5 has a gorgeous interior and cost half as much. Also it goes from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds. Infiniti needs better brand marketing in Europe.

Using the "official" mileages from the porsche uk website. Gasoline Hybrid: 41.5 MPG Diesel: 43.5 MPG You can calculate that the Diesel uses 15% more Energy per Mile (Diesel contains about 11% more energy per volume. STOP COMPARING MPGs! THEY DO NOT CONTAIN ANY RELEVANT INFORMATION!

why this is offered in Europe is beyond me!.... with diesels and uber small petrol engines with forced induction having even better economy to Hybrids, I thought the latter (in general) would be sold only in the US market, because of the expensive yet rubbish diesel, and even petrol they have. Back to this car specifically, I dont envisage many of these selling with the diesel being more frugal and cheaper

As much as anyone would know... Just 47bhp is not good enough. The car would be better off without being a hybrid if the battery is too small and if it's going to have a 47bhp motor. Hybrid and electric cars today have motors that are more powerful than 85bhp. 47bhp is pointless! Porsche is fucking it all up!
