The book written by Marcus Clarke - 'For the Term of His Natural Life' , was centred on this place. A mini TV series was made from it featuring actors Patrick McNee as the Commandant & Colin Friels as Rufus Dawes who was wrongly convicted & interned in this place. I have been here several times & whilst interesting, I found it a very eerie place demonstrating the penal system of the 1800's. The prisoners who were placed in solitary confinement were allowed to pray in the Chapple on a Sunday but they had to wear hoods with just eye slits & they weren't allowed to talk to one another. Such treatment sent many of them mad.

Port Arthur Tasmania means to the Australian convicts the same as the Australia continent means to the British convicts . The far far awayland down under.

Of all the horrors I noticed there a few stood out. The ordinary soldiers were no better off than the prisoners. Being from the lowly poor of England. The second was the "model prison" a torture of the mind so severe that it drove many mad. Luckily the asylum was right next door. There was no communication and the prisoners saw no one. Even for divine service the prisoners were placed in tall cubicles so that the only thing they could see was the minister. It made all the rest of the place seem quite benign. Certainly the conditions in the rest of the place would have been far better than within an English prison. Yet to imagine all those tortured souls was incredibly sobering.

My great gran father petitioned England and had flogging stopped at point pier. Boys 9yrs to 19yrs were flogged 50 lashes across the back, 25 for boys across the buttocks, with 'cat 'o' nine tail" Unfortunately after flogging was stopped, 'Birching' was introduced, wetted willows and the lashes continued. Birching was still legal in Victoria till 1980. A magistrate, sargent or a parent could admister the Birching in exchange for dropped charges Why did England sends boys to furthest southern land, to die on these islands, ? Mud flood, orphan trains, slavery. You could have your lashes
