the vent hose gets hot and warms the RV up, best to insulate the hose to keep the air cool. I wrapped mine in bubble wrap and aluminium tape .

The reason it gets hotter towards the back of the van is that this unit exhausts hot air from the condensor through the tube, but it draws the air to cool that hot condensor coil from the conditioned area creating a negative pressure in the van, so for all the cubic feet of hot air blowing out the tube, the same number of cubic feet of unconditioned hot air is being drawn in through the cracks and leaks in the vehicle. The ideal situation would be to isolate the vent area on the unit that's drawing air in to pass across the hot condensor coil and hack another vent tube onto it to draw cooling air in from the outside.

Great job and explanation, I saw people plugging these big units under trucks, but they have big trucks, I don't know if it's going to fit in a van, but it's nice to try, just plug in the vent that brings in cold air. inside the RV by forming a hole in the floor, the entire unit would be outside secured with metal brackets.

Cut out a window unit size area low on the side of the van.install a small window unit into the van with only about a 8th of an inch poking out. Put a vent cover where the ac unit is poking out. Only way to get good cold ac in van. Also you can get small mini split ac unit.

Another issue is that you're pulling in air from the exterior because it's created a negative pressure zone inside the van by pushing air outside. They don't seem to exist yet, but small dual hose portable air conditioners would be the best.

This would be a much more challenging setup but a window AC is a much more efficient setup. All the hot air that gets exhausted causes outside air to leak through other cracks and gaps around the van. Having the compressor inside also produces a lot of heat.

Weather tec makes the best reflective window covers , I would use an insulated tube as well to maximize efficiency. All these can builds I have yet to see anyone gut one and do closed cell spray foam first to the whole cavity

I appreciate that. I truly hope it helps. And if you can hook it to a small generator that draws its gas from the fuel tank it’s good for a week or more of running it at night (while sleeping). Which is most important in my opinion and keeps the batteries topped off too. Otherwise you’re only practical option is living at much higher and cooler altitudes and not everyone has that option.

Last June 2020 my nine-day vacation in the bus coincided with 90+ outside heat, I happen to have the portable AC but had some of the same issues like the heat from the vent tube which using your tip now I can replace with the aluminum vent tube and use the plastic to redirect the air. I have been going back and forth on the portable vs a window AC, pros and cons too many to list lol. The only thing I want to do different is somehow place the vent of the AC almost directly to a vent outlet, like, mayby customize a side hole in my bus like a dryer has a vent, sorry for long comment, great tips!!! .

Long comments welcome LOL. I sooo understand the dryer vent idea. Very smart. A wasted modification if you end up not using it but very ideal. I’m just glad I was of any help. It’s all about doing, learning, re-doing again until it’s right. I thrive on solving small problems so the Van Life gives me a constant upgrade lifestyle LOL. Especially since I’m no engineer. I've put a similar unit in my van to battle the Florida summer heat. I had the same problem with that hose heating the cab up a lot. They sell an insulated sleeve that goes right over the hose and it makes a huge difference (and it's under $20). Covering the windows to block out the sun, and seperating the cab from the back of the van is also important.

@@dremilypenney Hi. My unit is a GE model 5100. Never tried the dehumidifier, only the a/c portion. It still had to work it's butt off (in August especially.) Had the insulated pipe run out the front window, and that helped seperate the hot part of the van (the cab), from the living area. Expensive to run if you're not at an rv site.

You know.. I have it currently in storage for winter. But I will say that fighting that humidity on the east coast is certainly harder and I doubt this little thing will fight that well enough for you. I’m in a very dry climate but I know the struggle. When I’m in real humid areas I honestly just run the Van A/C with the heater on (both together) in winter to combat the moisture. I used to live in FL and that was my struggle.

There are many ways to upgrade the quality if this a/c system. That’s definitely one. Another is to buy an insulated exhaust hose. Some people cut holes for a more permanent exhaust system too. But this system works fair enough for me 😁 I hope your Some-Day project works out 😊

if you use insulated ac duct tubes you will see even better numbers from the exhaust tube, while you are in the duct area pick up a floor register that fits over the front (or build one from foam board) and direct the air down the plastic tube

Trying to see how you connected the plastic tubing to the cold air vents. On the screen, it comes across as flat black. I imagine black electricians or duct tape was used? No cutting the fins needed? .... an old saying from awhile back: AC does not like to turn corners. An idea: a wool blanket over the aluminum out going air tube may provide some insulation. 1 small piece of tape holds the plastic tube to the cold-air vent. Easily removed to store or move but just strong enough to hold it in place for use. 😊👌

I plug into shore power for the a/c unit and I got it on Amazon. I don’t have a generator (although sometimes I wish I did. And it’s not too efficient by the way. But it’s a solution for when I have to stay in the heat. The best solution (if possible) is to move to higher elevations or near a lake or ocean during the hot summer weather. 😊

something else that might have helped in this case was having a insulated wall section with opening door right behind the driver etc seats the hose could have been run and attached to the wall . this would keep hot heat from the front from entering the back and also even keep the colder air cold longer because of the insulated barrier wall. just a thought .

If i could give you some information to make your unit more efficient, the lower vent on the back of those type units are actually the inlet for the condenser section. If you could somehow pipe it to the outside also, you would not have to use conditioned air to blow across the con coil and to the outside. Great video, I plan installing something like this in mine.

Not at all. It’s a complex answer though. I use “shore power” when at a site or family members house. The only viable solution otherwise (that I see) is to tap into the top 3/4 of the gas tank using a 2500 watt generator that I would keep outside on one of those caged carriers on the rear hitch (for noise and vapors). I doubt solar would ever be a good idea for this kind of load.

A single-hose portable AC sucks the air out of your room and blows it outside. Then that causes a vacuum which in turn draws heat from outside into the room through every little crack.

The flexible exhaust hose is a big heat gain that is counterproductive. The difference between the cheap uninsulated vinyl hose and your uninsulate aluminum hose is ZERO. Both uninsulated-same heat radiated. Go out and buy 3" diameter fiberglass insulated flexible supply duct hose with 1" insulation and fix it right.

I have. I made a simple square out of thick cardboard and duct taped the end of the hose to it so all the cold air runs to the back now. Sounds ghetto LOL but it’s solid.

I do not use a generator. Although one would be a good idea so I suggested it. But I have a long extension cord and use it only with shore power as I only need it when visiting family. Otherwise I am only located in perfect temperature environments (I drive and live wherever the weather is nice in my state).

It’s a great idea but I personally don’t need a generator. I generally stay away from the heat unless I’m visiting family etc and they allow me to plug in. If I’m working (and I usually only work in winter) then the heat isn’t a problem.

I work out in oil fields so I ripped out the passenger seat the back seat for cargo space and sleeping Silversdo crew cab. Put 375.00 Portable A/C 5000 BTU behind the driver side . Cut a hole out that side for exhaust which is very important. Drilled small hole there for drainage. Ran the power cord to right side and drilled a hole there. Bought 3200 quite mode predator Generator . In the month of June it paid for itself . It uses 2.2 gallons for. 10 hours that saves from having to run to hotels and paying 125 night plus fuel going there and back . Including time it takes . Your not pulling a trailer and finding place to park it . That self contained at lowest level mentality . denominator

That’s a difficult question since your rig might need twice what mine needs or half what I use. I personally use a 3000w which is more than I need but better safe than sorry.

Exactly. My body temp regulation handles swing temps better than most I assume. I’m usually fine with fans, shade, etc. but need some help during the hottest hours. Also I try and sleep between 2am and 10am if possible during the summers if I’m not up in the mountains where it’s cooler.

only one issue with your test, that's the infrared thermometer. It doesn't work with shiny metallic surfaces. To get around this, use some masking tape on metallic surfaces. Other than that great job on the setup.

That’s the same reason I do this. My dog can’t always be with me unfortunately. And none of my cooling methods are extremely efficient.. but they keep the temp comfortable enough for him. My personal opinion is to mount it on a covered rear luggage rack mounted on the tow hitch. That way it’s vented properly outside of the van and quieter.

Your bus may be bigger than my van. And the AC (both) are “barely enough” for my size. Just so you know. Also, yes the Isolator should run an AC unit pretty easily but the vehicle would need to be running the whole time to activate the isolator. My biggest recommendation (more than anything else) is to focus on “Prevention” as much as possible. The less direct Sun the easier to cool and stay in cooler regions or altitudes as much as possible (if possible). No matter what you do, unless you spend Tons of money and engineering.. there will be no scenario that is perfect. BEST wisdom= a Van life will always be closer to (camping) than an apartment. So just keep that in mind and you’re golden 😁

This system would work with solar.. IF you have (over) 8,000 watts and a 2k inverter and Only during peak sun hours. Absolutely can. But forgetting it won’t work while sleeping at night unless several thousand dollars invested in expensive batteries. I’m not sure the right question is “Can it work that way” or “is there a cheaper more efficient way.” Because a $400 (cheap) gas generator tapped into the top 3/4 of the fuel tank allows all night long (all week long) cool temps while the sun is away. It’s smarter, cheaper and easier. Not “KZbin Awesome” LOL.. but real.

The piece of tape doesn’t cover the whole vent. Probably 20% of the vent is still blowing cold air into the front. But because the ice cold air is directed specifically to the back it’s way more efficient. Cooling the front and back area. If I made an adapter to direct all of the cold air it would be even more efficient. And I’ll probably do that sometime

I would use a 2200 or 2500 W generator that has an X ternal port to tap into your fuel tank making sure that it does not go below the three-quarter mark of the tank so you cannot run it dry. A generator by itself will last anywhere between three and six hours at most. Without using the fuel tank. There are many types and brands to choose from as long as it is quiet and can use an external fuel source. There’s an awful lot more to it but I would suggest you talk to a mechanic for the details because that’s some thing I haven’t done myself 👍

I have a bigger version in my apartment and I noticed it makes quite a bit of noise at the vent spot. Does the smaller one make any noise and if so how do you combat that while stealth camping?

It does make noise. I’m sure there are creative ways to reduce it other than closing the thick curtain I have that separates front to back, but I use it as white noise to help me sleep. Or headphones for music and movies. It’s not terribly loud though.

Yes. It can run off of 400a LithIon with a powerful Inverter through the night. Or a good generator tapped into the top 3/4 of the gas tank. But I chose not to invest that heavy expense because now that I am completely debt free and my monthly expenses are about 600/mo if I don’t drive much, so I live on the mountain too where it’s cool in summers and drive down to only work weekends then back up. It’s my happy place. So it works for me.

I watched the videos. Pretty cool. I had to put mine in the Front as an after thought because I didn’t want to tear up my existing bed and there was some cool ideas in that video for sure. I only have mine in my van for 1 or 2 months of the entire year as well. Most times I am fortunate enough to just drive up and live on the mountain tops where it’s cool and use it for only the days I’m in town. So making it more permanent wasn’t necessary for me. I am going to look into prefabricated cabinets at Home Depot. It will be nice and plush like this one is. TV, commode, sink, microwave, air conditioning and be able to stay warm and cool. That’s all.

Get some home ac insulated duct tubing first off. And maybe upgrade to a dual tube portable AC... that single duct one you have uses your cooled air to blow out the heated air back our, so it’s extremely inefficient in its entire process. Also you may want to understand what reflective materials do when you are taking a temperature reading with an Infrared meter. It makes your readings false.

I don’t run it in my batteries. In the video I have it running off of shore power and at the end I talk about connecting it to a small generator that taps directly into the top 2/3 of the vans fuel tank for extended boondocking. It’s cheaper than investing into another $2k of batteries and a generator has the benefit of running all night so I can sleep. In fact I only run it at night now so I can boondocks longer. Then I park the front half of my van (windshield area) under shade to prevent it heating up too much but still have the solar in the sun.

For this specific A/C video I used an extension cord that runs to the back where my van is plugged into shore power. The upgrade runs the cord to a small generator that taps into the top 2/3 of the vans fuel tank for extended boondocking. To run this on the batteries/inverter was too expensive a method. If someone has the 4K for powerful 300a LithIon & 2,500w Pure Sine Wave inverter and 4000w solar it would work but that was a terribly large expense compared to $450 Generator and modification to the tank. I suppose I only have you half the info. Sorry. So in my specific citation I don’t typically work summers. I usually spend my summers at high altitudes in nature where it’s 75* outside. So if I do use it (I keep my generator stored at a family members house) and it’s vented outside but located in my van when I use it. 90% of the time I plug it in to shore power but on occasion if I’m boondocking in Arizona/Nevada I’ll take it on the trip with me and use the generator. And stealth isn’t so important with the noise when I’m far away from everything. And in those times I only use it at night when sleeping. It was a much less expensive option for me and how rare I use it when not plugged in. But I love your system. I work hard in winter and take summers off so my annual income doesn’t allow for NICE upgrades hehe.

There’s 3 options to power it. 1) Extension cord from a source to an inlet at the back of the van (ME) while visiting family, friends, campgrounds but very low powered A/C unit out of respect 2) Small Quiet gas generator that is directly tapped into the top 3/4 of the van’s fuel tank (My Future Goal) 3) Way more battery banks and Solar panels than I currently have and in a location closer to the equator for constant direct sunlight (extremely expensive system to setup, but possible). -N8 😊

I'm convinced portable ac units are actually heaters in disguise. I'm installing a minisplit system in my van, powered by battery (shore,solar and alternator charged) and shore power while camping. In a pinch I can power it by generator if solar is poor. Costs more but I think a great option for the long haul.

That’s why I had to isolate the exhaust and heat to guide it outside. I did upgrade with an insulated duct and other minor adjustments. Because it’s basically equal heat and cooling which is an insane waste.

I also have mine with shore/generator/battery options. But I never use the batteries for it since it’s terrible when (again.. the fridge compressor kicks in and I happen to start the water pump for the sink etc). Sometimes I wish I had a $150k setup with a single thermostat on the wall ((like a house)). But I typically stay in cool beautiful environments during the summer. So to be honest I store it all away unless I’m visiting family or friends in hot zones.

Honestly 2 (personal reasons). The rooftop A/C is way better but I wanted my van to be 100% off grid and that would require shore plug-in. And I can run this A/C on a small generator. Also.. (again just a preference) but if or when I can plug in when visiting family I didn’t want to use a lot of utilities. Rooftop draws at least 2,000 more watts.

I truly appreciate you. But no, I did not monetize KZbin (but they force the commercials anyway) and I have no affiliate Links or anything at all. I just like making the videos and hope to help people. But I would recommend a 2,500W inverter if going that route (especially since I’ll assume other things will be using the same inverter). If you use a generator there’s no need for an inverter (usually built in).

I’m actually only a (very part time) nurse lol. This lifestyle allows me to work 2 days a week during the winter and take off the summers for travel and hiking. I can only live this life since I have almost No Bills (Rent, Utilities, Trash, Internet, sewage, etc). And now that my van is paid off. During 2020 though I worked enough for a lifetime (60-80 hrs a week). Now I focus on lowering my stress and forgetting what day it is 😁
