Portable Vocal Booth by Imperative Audio

The Portable Vocal Booth is the first product from Imperative Audio. The “PVB” was designed to offer a truly portable solution for singers, voiceover artists, broadcasters, podcasters and voice professionals.
This video offers an overview of the booth and its specifications which will be launched at the Believe In Music event in January 2021. This is in place of the annual NAMM show which has been moved online due to the pandemic.
The Imperative Audio PVB Portable Vocal Booth is available in the UK from www.Studiospar... and will shortly be available worldwide. Check the website for updates.

Interesting idea! I recommend adding a back panel or maybe a thick sound absorbing curtain. The back is very important for reflections and our bodies are not enough!!

Hey Richard, thanks for your suggestion. this was a consideration for the beginning, but the difference in performance was slight in our tests. That said, we will continue to look at the idea and see how we can make it work in the future.

You guys are almost ahead of the game, I recommend you look into sound proofing solutions as there are thousands of singers, brass and string musicians who are at home unable to practice or record. I am trying various solutions right now, effectiveness, weight and cost being prime considerations.

The numbers look good, but would you mind letting us know what the walls of the room you recorded this in are made of? They don't appear to be standard drywall material, and if this was recorded in a room that's already treated or soundproofed that'd make any sample moot.

Sorry for the late reply Arthur. The video and audio were recorded in the Studiospares showroom which is about 5m x 20m (just less than 3m high). The majority of the room is drywall with a small area of slat wall for cables etc. The floor is laminate throughout and a corner (where we filmed) has a very thin black material pinned to the wall. Due to lockdown, we don't have that much gear in there at the moment, so it's fairly "live" in there with long reflection times as you would expect. Hope that helps.

Hey Lee, it depends on the lawn mower model, length and grain of the grass, how far away your neighbours house is and the acoustic properties of the area between your houses. ;-) Seriously though, it delivers an average of 28.4dba reduction (One-Third-Octave Spectrum LZeq in accordance with IEC 61260) which is unheard of for an open booth solution.

It’s a very beautiful idea - love the design. As an opera singer I record at home and have a lot of challenges with the room acoustic. Isn’t it so that most of the problems come from behind the singer? There the vocal booth is open at the back do the reflections still bounce against my wall and return into the mic or is this booth designed in such a way that whatever comes from behind is absorbed by the material inside the booth? Also the bottom is open where the sound of the room could still come in. I experimented with a self made booth that is open underneath my waist and the reflections are still recorded in My case. Love to hear your idea

Hey Josh, When carrying out our tests we found that difference when having the back and bottom closed were negligible. The openness is great, and there is plenty of room so you're not to feel claustrophobic. We have just had a stunning review in MusicTech too: bit.ly/MusicTechPVBreview

Hi Josh, to arrive at this design we tested lots of different shapes and sizes. The beauty of the cylindrical shape is that coupled with the acoustic treatment, it all but eliminates standing waves. This helps get rid of those offensive reflections and artifacts that we hear when recording and mixing. As for the open back, you (the performer) acts as part of the treatment and largely blocks the open area. We tried acoustic treatment across the open area and the difference in performance was negligible, as the performer is in that space whether there is an opening or not. Again, the depth of the panels or "shells" helps eliminate reflections before they move down to the lower area, which in turn allowed us to have an open lower area. The mic and performer positioning will make a slight difference depending on the application (voice-over, singer, podcaster). So, I suspect that as an opera singer, your vocals are incredibly dynamic and as such, I would treat the mic as you would in a live performance. This is also huge advantage with the open back as it will not restrict your movement within the booth. Sorry for the long answer, but hopefully it helps.

As an opera singer I can’t stand to close to the mic - also, I’m still old school opera singer of 100 kilo haha 😂 so I hope I fit in. The explanation makes perfect sense and I am sure you did try out a closed product or closing it to the ground. It’s also a beautiful design. Do you offer a trial when order the product, as in 30 days money return? I do need to try it out and see if I fit in it and that there is enough place for the mic to stand so it’s not against the wall closing the back of the mic. The perfect placement would be in the middle of the booth. - when I stand in the opening, let’s say a few centimeter out would the sound still be captured by the capsule of the mic or does the voice spread in my room? This may sound like a silly question, I’m just thinking aloud - I’m sure you tried that all out, maybe not with an opera singer, but in a way to see what then result is when standing fully inside the booth or a little outside or in the opening.

That is a great question. For the moment, this is the only size we have but it's certainly something to think about for the future. We would recommend this booth currently for electric guitars, horns, brass and anything else you can fit in it!

Does this help at all for air conditioner noise or computer fans, etc. Noisy room stuff. Makes sense it would help trap reflection issues. But does it help with other issues as well?

if you really can’t avoid switching off AC or other fan noises then at least pre-sample as a “quiet” baseline before you record your vocal so you can filter it out with a tool like izotope RX

Hey Ian, this was a consideration from the beginning, but when testing the difference in performance, the results were negligible. It would of course make a difference if there was nobody inside the PVB when micing a combo for example, but this is a different application where the output is significantly higher and would therefore require less mic gain, and then you can't hear the difference anyway. But, we will continue to look at some kind of back solution if users still feel it's worth it.
