@@restlessfrager Speedrunning is just about the coolest and most recognised thing outside of the gaming community. We’ve raised so much money as a community at SGDQ. There are bounties put on discovering new optimizations. Id rather be known as one of the thousand or so speedrunners who earned a world record than one of the million or so random office workers. And does it really matter if you arent known? If you make money off of what you love to do, playing games, who really cares about being remembered? Technically, landing on the moon was an arbitrary achivement. What was even the point of going to the moon? What did we really have to prove? By your logic, that isn’t history. Nothing is history, if the world will end. So I say make “history” in your small community rather than focusing on merely earning money in a boring job.

Something that should've been mentioned in this video and may confuse some people is that the main category back then was Single Segment, where we couldn't use saves at all, meaning that this kind of a thing kills the run instantly. Today, with NoSLA (No Save Load Abuse) as the main category, the softlock itself wouldn't be that painful, since loading a save file made before entering the chamber would easily avoid it. Another nitpick is that the frankenturret pushing the other one onto a button is not a physics object, but an animated one, with exceptionally broken hitbox, which you can see at 9:02 in the video. This is the reason why it can push a physics object with such big force - animated object don't react to physics objects, they simply follow the pre-made animation, and if anything is stopping it, they just push it away.
@CantEven3 жыл бұрын
You have a decent point about pointing out the category difference; missing cubethrow used to lose 50 seconds, now it loses like 5 at most. While Msushi probably could have brought this fact up, I think the specifics on how the frankenturrets fling each other might have been a little too specific to mention as anything other than an aside, especially given Msushi's relatively casual audience; at a certain point you have to draw a line on how much information is in the video, otherwise you have a 2 hour video Hey, at least he gave you route credit though
@Krzyhau3 жыл бұрын
@@CantEven Well, yes, I understand the video format Msushi goes for, but it's still nice to point stuff out for more curious people in the comment section. The frankenturret thing I mentioned is by no means a major misinformation. As a side note, I wish there were videos going in-depth into some mechanics of this game. While it is extremely nice to have videos like the ones made by Msushi, which are a great introduction to Portal 2 speedrunning scene for people who aren't really aware about what's going on in there, I always wanted to see videos presenting all the technical details in the nice way, something like you can see on pannenkoek2012 channel. I actually tried that in a past, but I just lack motivation and experience to make it nice looking and informative.

Dude, this happened to me as well in a casual playthrough! I was coming back to the game a while ago for a nostalgia trip, and I got softlocked in this chamber in this exact same way. I suspected it had something to do with the frankencubes, so it's cool to see that theory confirmed, in a way.

I thought this was a tutorial on the complex "Cube Throw" technique but I'm still confused about it. Still - awesome video!
@Anklejbiter3 жыл бұрын
Throwing cubes is pretty simple. If you let go while moving the mouse, the cube will go through the air with whatever speed you were moving it at. However, while throwing a cube is simple, getting it to land where you want is not, and takes practice.

I’ve been doing a two minute long speedrun for a few weeks now and what I have discovered is that every time I think I have it optimized I think of something else that will save a second or two a few days later. It’s really rewarding when you find skips and time saves that only you know about that can be used to get records

I like the ending message. Even when speedrunners claim that a record is unbeatable or dead, someone will find something to change that, and the grind starts up again. Never give up, even when everyone else says to.

This sounds like a nightmare you'd get after weeks of sleep-deprived grinding. WR pace, but the cutscene softlocks, and suddenly the walls of your IRL house fall away like cardboard to reveal you're at AGDQ, and you're jolted awake by the deafening voice of Spike Vegeta screaming "THaT'S NEvER hAPpEneD BEFORe!"

it will never cease to amaze me that the dialogue in Portal is actually bound to the characters, in this case a potato that's attached to the player. That's such an ass-backwards way to do it, but it feels right, and it leads to these half-realistic glitches, that makes the game feel just a bit more alive every time I see one.
