20:42 in the main menu, there's a menu to go back through certain chapters and to listen to the people who worked on/within them explain their thought process through different things.. for the portal switching thing, one of them said "players often didn't pay attention and used the wrong portal which ended killing themselves and it happened with many" so they literally just put a failsafe just in case so it doesn't ruin the flow.. you can find it if you're interested

20:28 Fun fact, the reason that part makes no sense with the portals is because in testing valve found most testers forgot which portal they initially placed in that segment, so a lot fell to their death. As a compromise, valve made it so it doesn't care which portal you place, they both work and have the tube anyway. Also the part earlier about the fat turret being the wife of another turret is false; there was originally gonna be a scene where chell was married to the fat turret.

10:37 I wonder if that was Valve making a jab at those custom Portal stories that just outright murder you if you get stuck in those positions rather than letting you get back out. 20:43 I don't remember if it was mentioned in commentary but that design was deliberate because most play testers would panic and press the left button/right trigger without thinking which portal was extending the excursion funnel so they wouldn't wind up sending themselves to their death by accident and ruin the cinematic effect of it. Speaking of accidents, I like how play testers of Half-Life: Alyx had so much trouble accidentally ejecting the magazine of their weapon or dropping them while pulling one out of the backpack and they said that aspect of fumbling around in the middle of combat and panicking was one of their favorite parts because they recognized that it wasn't the fault of the game, just them not being used to VR.
