My dad was one of those office workers playing Doom on his lunch breaks. Both single player, and deathmatches with his colleagues. He would used to tell us about his escapades in Doom as kind--of bedtime stories haha. He also bought the 32X version of Doom before we even had a 32X, which I think was my first actual experience of the game. Dad was the reason we even got into games, when he bought a C64 when I was about 6 or so. Tbh I think it's fair to say my dad was a bigger gamer than I have ever been. "Yeah, I know that's how shotguns work" It's not actually. They have much higher range than people understand. Video games nerf it because it would be the undisputed best weapon in most of the games scenarios. Real gun warfare takes place at MUCH higher ranges than combat in video games.
@Hapetiitti3 жыл бұрын
This here is the truth. It's all to do with game balance, not realism. It's actually fairly easy to miss with a shotgun, even at short range and relatively wide pellet spread, at least if you're trying to hit a moving target.

Sadly this is an awful hypocrisy to the argument. The shotgun would be unfair when based on realistic shotguns. But instead we have an even more unbalanced weapon based on real life, the assault rifle. I've written many times about my gripe with it, especially in modern games and CS. It has fast fire rate, good damage output, low recoil, low spread, good magazine size and high accuracy. In every game it's like a rapid fire m1 garand. Name a single shooter where at least 60% of players don't instantly gravitate towards the assault rifle or most commonly the ak and sticks with it unless forced to switch or brag with sick sniper shots. Even in a sci fi game like Halo is the definitive god weapon a burst fire assault rifle. No alien plasma or laser weapon. Just a regular bullet fired real life assault rifle. Honestly it needs to be seriously nerfed in games. Give submachine guns the same feature of every first bullet being 100% accurate and significantly drop the bullet damage at medium long to long range. It should be good but should be inferior to an smg or shotgun at medium close or even in power at medium range. Imagine if Doom 2016 and Eternal had an assault rifle that was an all purpose weapon for any situation with great damage like the super shotgun in Doom 2, except at ALL RANGES. Imagine if the super shotgun was just as good at 10 meters as 100 meters. It wouldn't be fair and just boring when everyone uses the exact same weapon and strategy without any variation.

I want to correct some inaccuracies I noticed. 1. Doom's 3D nature isn't trickery, the game makes use of vertical auto-aim to pitch shots towards monsters at different elevations. Notice how during the Doom 2 footage that your super shotgun blasts hit the wall behind the Pain Elemental hovering above you. 2. Adrian did make several clay sculptures at first, but several of the other models were made from rubber and laytex by Gregor Punchatz. The Spider Mastermind was one of them. 3. Doom completely lacks scripted sequences, everything is handled through individual activation triggers. Doom 64 however... 4. There's actually no difference in the engines between Doom 1 and 2, besides the new demons of course. All the monsters and weapons are actually hard-coded into the engine.

doom videos analyzing the series as a whole are definitely overdone, but the central recurring theme of relating everything back to the title was something i don't think i've seen discuss before when talking about this series as a whole. you wrote this in such a unique way i don't think i've seen anyone discuss before while also articulating why i love this franchise so dearly. well fucking done dude. absolute kudos. i also love how you focused so much time on levy and hulshult's work on TAG. it feels like barely anyone gives him the credit he deserves due to them being "not mick" (not helped either by the admittedly quiet in-game mixing). also the emphasis you put on the slayer's humanity in eternal in parallel to the intern was so well done too. another aspect i feel people absolutely sleep on and sometimes bash unfairly. the slayer's appeal is being a no nonsense dude, but like the player at heart he's a human like the rest of us and i love that. makes the reveal in sentinel prime before the gladiator all the more amazing and gut-wrenching when you read up on the lore. finally, 1:19:47 fucking THANK YOU. absolutely sick of people in this community shaming others for playing on a lower difficulty, especially if you want to learn and improve. i wanna play eternal now. brb.

Like the frigging "Friends made Doom what it is today" Like that is such a far reach of a comment. Friends didn't even reach the rest of the world before 5 or so years AFTER the Doom release. And Doom was a major hit in Europe from the release in stores. I know he is trolling. As he even puts in Halo where he should be putting in Quake. Half-life makes kind of sense. As it was the next big modding game. Which even had it's own standalone release from a mod that is even bigger than original Doom is today. Not that i personal like prefer it. But no one can deny the success of Counter-Strike 🤷♀Even if we think it's a boring game with toxic communities. But i guess it works. We are all in the comments correcting him. Instead of commenting. The Doom engine actually has height, as in projectiles and hitscan attacks being able to fly over things, but enemies and the player can't do that, that feature was later implemented in Heretic, Hexen and Strife, Heretic and Hexen allow you to fly and Hexen and Strife also allow you to jump. The height property in monsters and the player is used only to check if they can pass through certain sectors depending on the difference bewteen the floor and the ceiling. There is also an autoaim system, that's what allows you to shoot enemies above or below you, but it has a limited range, there's also a slight horizontal autoaim, but it's not as powerful as the vertical autoaim.

31:12 - That's not how shotguns work IRL. Real shotguns work closer to OG Doom than Doom 3. We still measure shotgun range in yards. If you use the right choke or ammo you are lethal to quite a range. It's not rifle range but no level in Doom is big enough for rifle range.

I have been playing DOOM since I was a child, starting with the classics. My dad introduced me and I was immediately hooked. I played it ALL the time, and even made my own DOOM game with my toys. When DOOM 2016 first came out, I was beyond excited. I fired up the game and was about to start on Ultra-Violence, my default difficulty, when I noticed that Nightmare was available. It was in red, not white like the other difficulties, but it also didn't have a padlock next to it like Ultra-Nightmare did. So I thought "Why not?" I figured I'd try it out for a bit, see how unfair it was, and restart on Ultra-Violence. I did not. I kept playing. I was hooked. It was brutal, but I absolutely loved it. I ended up completing my first playthrough on Nightmare with 100% collectibles and upgrades. So, when Eternal came out, I figured I should carry on with Nightmare as my first playthrough. How bad could it be? My dear God, that almost murdered my fun. DOOM Eternal takes everything from 2016 and ramps it up exponentially. I almost gave up, but I persisted. When I finally brought down the Icon of Sin, I was elated. Never had I played something so damn difficult, and yet so satisfying. I continued this with the Ancient Gods, which made things even worse, but I did it. I love DOOM so much.

When I first booted up Doom Eternal in March 2020, I went straight into UV (because I wasn't crazy enough to attempt Nightmare on my first playthrough, only ever beat Doom 2016 on Hurt Me Plenty) and though it was definitely tough, I still managed to beat it. The Gladiator boss was the only time I had to use the Sentinel Armor buff, though I kept trying and trying without it. But when it came to the DLC, I again went in head first in UV, and had to stop and bring it down to HMP near the end of the third mission. I had to use the Sentinel Armor buff again during the fight with the cubes in mission 2, and having a crack addled Marauder, an armored Mancubus, Hell Knights, and the big beefy demon boy (can't remember its name) on my ass was just too much for me. If I didn't turn the difficulty down then, it would have been at the final boss of the first DLC. No offense to anyone who enjoyed its difficulty, especially on higher levels, but FUCK that fight. The second DLC I kept on HMP because I wanted to see where the story was going, mostly. Finished it without too much trouble on the last boss (or any part of it really IIRC). Might go back to it and try again on UV down the road. I never got the chance to play any of the original Doom games back in the day, and the time I tried Doom 3, it wasn't my cup of tea. But then I watched the Doom 2016 review from Razorfist (which despite his poor opinion on the OST, is spot on) and I gave it a shot. And I was hooked. Learning a bit about Doom from this video was informative and entertaining, and I 100% agree with your sentiments on CoD4:MW. We can only hope Id can somehow up the ante if they develop a sequel to Eternal, but by the looks of the DLC ending, that won't be for a while.
@plushiepenguin3 жыл бұрын
Personally I think UV is the sweet spot for Eternal (and most Doom game). Just the right amount of power and challenge with enough leeway for playing dumb. It just feels so great to overcome the challenge of well designed encounters with with wits and arsenal while flying across the map like C-130 warthog on crack. And imo especially more fun if you play like with restrictive rule sets like no-BFG/Unmaykr, no ChaingunShield abuse, no Ice bomb, minimal lock-on rocket use, Using full arsenal, also no Extra Lives. I just feel like I've earned the power of the god stylishly destroying armies of hell like if Dante from Devil May Cry only used guns and was a silent crack-addled anger golem. The fUnzONe is just pure dopamine to my veins. Though TAG2 is just kind of dissappointing in design. It's peaks are as good as the rest of Eternal but it's dips are far too low in comparison to the rest of the game. Though not sure watchu talking about with the blood swamps cube fight. Only Hell Knights and Pinkies spawn with Shield guys and zombies for ammo refills during the fight and you don't even need to fight them. It's mostly just a game of keep away while you snipe the cubes. Personally I just keep most of them alive by the end of each stage to kite them then flame belch for a full armor refill as I hit the last box. Another thing that feels good in all dooms is to leave a level with full resources imo.

I hate people that gatekeep games by saying "git good bro" but lemme tell you nightmare without weapon wheel is a different game and you MUST try it And then do a ultra-nightmare run if you like cbt that mutch.

I could even argue that the old doom games are still a valid template for a video game even today. Some changes for a modern realisation of a doom game would be a few weapon rebalances and upgrades A bit of an increase in enemy speed and tad increase of complexity (specifically for some demons to have anti-camping methods which kind of was an issue in the old games). Complex map navigation is an earned skill and a level requirement that should never go away, vertical maneuverability should remain limited to keep infighting a viable tactic.
