I think the portal has a negative impact on the steering rack. Not gonna sugar coat it. I hear people say the same thing about the rear axle and while I agree we have not seen this to be a problem with Jeeps on 40’s w V8’s. With that being said, We run 42’s on Loren Healy’s portal Bronco FunRunner XL with our steering rack. We are also developing a billet replacement rack for the Tacoma so we plan to solve the taco steering next

@@74weld Once people see these on the trail, sales will ramp. I'll have to save quite a while to afford at 20k. 100% understand current pricing, IMHO it's a good price for what they do. Appreciate the nuances of this design, such as limiting the lift so that it just allows appropriate larger tires and ground clearance. Hopefully economies of scale allow pricing to come down. Questions: How does the added width affect handling, lean & ride quality? What is an optimum shock spring setup to bring out the best of these portals? (NC trails mostly) When can I see some of these on a GX? Would love for reputable KZbinrs to be able to test these for a few weeks to help get the word out. As always, appreciate the frank details.

Thanks for very clear and simple explanations looking like a powertrain engineering course. I have 2 questions. Diesel engines have less power but more torque. Are your portals suitable with medium duty diesels such as; Duramax V8 or Cummins inline-6? Electric motors offer smoother torque, so alternating force stress on the bearings are less. But their harmonics have different frequency spectrum characteristics than internal combustion engines. Will these portals appliable with electrical vehicles in the future?

We have electric builds in the works. Diesel is fine, I see no issue with any powertrain I’ve looked at to date.

I’m a bit unsure of the unit bearings being a true full float? Would it have been possible for a traditional spindle and wheel bearings or is that just too limited for hubs, packaging etc?
@74weld
@74weld 9 ай бұрын
A full float by definition is an axle assembly where the weight of the vehicle is carried by the hub and the axle shaft only sees torsion, and not weight. A unit bearing does just this.

you made the comment that if you want to run the rubicon this is it, but don't you lose a large amount of flex with no additional lift or a small lift than a long arm lift with coilovers? I have a 2014 wrangler that I'm trying to decide how to set up the suspension and this is a very interesting option. The Rubicon and Holy Cross are my bucket list trails. Thanks for any more insight you can give me.

We loaned our 392 to Erik Miller a month ago on the Rubicon. The ARB compressor died 10 minutes into the trail and it was pouring rain. 14:25 I think you misspoke there, in one sentence you say you convert to semi float then the next you say you convert from a semi float to a full float. Is your setup full or semi float?
@74weld
@74weld 10 ай бұрын
We convert a semi float to a full float. Our portal bolts to the semi float flange and the portal carries the weight turning the rear into a full float

Will the portal still work if I already have 5.13 gears installed and run a 37” tire on my Gladiator?

I would probably say you won’t be happy with the gearing. A 4:10 converts to a 5.0 That is what we would typically recommend

Yes, we plan to work with Teleflow on a system. Their stuff is proven in Dakar and is a very cool setup.

Yep, we are working with Teleflow. They have an amazing setup we plan to integrate into our system. It has no airlines at the wheel and is not constantly pressurized so if you ever lose a line the system does not bleed out. Very trick and proven in Dakar.

@ 16:45 That bearing pressed onto the plate is a stupid idea, I can take it off with my knowledge no worries, but you should've added a spigot ledge at the back side for removal so you can get the puller under (cow's c..t). To the arm chair warrior brigade, yes I can remove the bearing for replacement and no I won't tell you how as it's industry secretes, but it would be far easier if it was made to use common tooling.

Sorry for being so stupid…wait, we added a relief to get a generic puller on it…ok I guess we are not totally dumb and maybe we have done this once or twice before😜

So, why not helical cut gears for stronger teeth, greater contact patch and quieter operation? Is this purely for race applications? Edit: Slightly covered at 20:00
@74weld
@74weld 10 ай бұрын
It really has nothing to do with gears and everything to do with bearings. There are also lots of other complications with helical, but the main issue is bearing packaging and specs due to thrust. It also generates a lot more heat than the straight cut

@@74weld Indeed, the losses are less too. Probably not the space for a crush washer/bearing or a conical. The gear whine might be tolerable considering they are effectively running close to wheel speed (except for the idlers). I just immediately think of 1st and reverse in my manual and the whine associated with that. Considering this isn't intended for a highway application, and the likely noise from aggresive thread tires it's probably a wash.

Honestly can't what for more people to get these and the competition so we can see what really works and what doesn't. Comparing noise means nothing when one wieghts 50lb more but is quiet. I also want to see how the others mount I believe the 47welds ifs set up is the way to go. But if they say there's can beat this then let's see it.

@@mattbrew11 I know now that someone smarter than everyone has told me. Not sure how I’ve successfully made it 43 years in life without knowing simple arithmetic. Here’s a quote from 74 Welds website. “Our 4 gear design provides a 22% gear reduction at the hubs which allows for a 22% bigger tire without the extra stress on all drivetrain components. This means that you can throw out the stock 32” tires and replace them with 39” tires without having to lift your Jeep or re-gear your axles” If the jeeps can increase tire size by 7”, why can’t I? Yes Tremors come with 35’s. Now I personally use old school math /rule of thumb to land on proper gearing ratio by multiplying tire diameter by 0.12. Which doesn’t land me far off. And being a super duty, a little extra gearing won’t hurt.

@@derekeasley5894 if you want to find the “perfect” gearing ratio (not accounting for parasitic losses due to rotating mass and rolling resistance, do this 4.3/35 = x/42 and solve for X 42 x 4.3 = 180.6 / 35 = 5.16 For reference ive been in a godzilla powered truck on 42s with 24 or 26 inch wheels I dont remember and it was showing 9mpg and the performance was very underwhelming.
