Portchester Castle | From Roman Fort to Medieval Stronghold!

In this video, I explore the incredible grounds of Portchester Castle which started life as a Roman Fort to defend from the invasion of Saxon barbarian pirates!
The fort was well used by the Saxons after Roman rule as a fortified settlement. Later, the Normans took ownership and added the great square keep which is one of the largest and oldest keeps in England.
The castles' commanding coastal position lent it to become a favourite staging post for English royalty to launch their campaigns overseas, such as the Battle of Agincourt which Henry V launched here in 1415.
With such a rich history, naturally, there are a number of ghost stories attached to the castle grounds!
Portchester Castle is now under the ownership of English Heritage.

The grave you asked about being one of a pirate I have one question do you think a pirate would be given such a nice burial and headstone? I don't really.

No, I don't think it's a pirate grave at all. I read a second story about a pirate grave being on the shore outside the castle, which is more likely. Both stories were sadly very vague! Thank you for watching, I really appreciate it. 🙂

Hiya Nic...what an absolutely beautiful location. That outta bay is enormous, as you say it must have contained quite a lot of timber buildings and wonder if it had a marketplace as well.... definitely big enough. The Augustine church is also stunning. The gravestone is beautifully detailed, under the crown looks like an infinity symbol...I'd be surprised if it was a pirate grave as I believe most were simply buried at sea, folks probably think it's a pirate gravestone because of the skull and crossbones, but as you say, that doesn't symbolise pirates. That keep is huge and the view from the top is simply stunning...love the ancient wall art as well. Nic... thanks so much for this. Really enjoyed it.🖤

Lovely video, used to live in Portchester/Caer-Peris, so spent many a day there but back then they didn't have all the displays in the castle like they do now. I have even done a few Druid ceremonies in the grounds to celebrate the Autumn Equinox a few years back.

In fact they were custom houses & storage places for traders. Not Saxon pirates - see in depth study of the Saxon Shores in the Roman manuscripts.

I am so late to this!! Impressively huge castle, you're spoilt for historical sites down your way...I think the symbol under the crown is an eternal life thing...if it is a serpent eating its tail, kind of hard to make out
