so you're shorting bonds as a hedge because it's been going down this year? in other words, following the price trend while fading sentiment. but as you mentioned, it's not going to be a perfect correlation, and these are mostly short term trades. so unless these short bond trades fall under your core strategy with COT or news failure, how do you know whether you have positive expected value with these hedging positions, instead of getting bounced around from noisy short term price moves?

I think it's not the correct interpretation. Jason is trading his COT edge and say with that he has a portfolio of stocks, currencies etc. Now even though COT aligns him in good risk/reward play, but market as whole is sensitive to bond movement and if bonds fall, his portfolio will also get a hit. For that reason he is hedging his bonds related risk by shorting bonds. So in case when bonds crash and hence his portfolio is also down, he will still be neutral (even slightly positive) due to short bonds hedge.

When you short bonds, do you have to pay interest to the party that is long on the bond when the bond pays intetest?

So as a news failure for treasuries, would you be looking for something, say a higher than expected cpi, and then a pull back in yields as a result? When Nonfarm payroll number came out a couple weeks ago, I thought that could have been a potential news failure for treasuries

It’s not that easy. News failures MUST occur when positioning also reinforces the trade. News failures are NOT in and of themselves trading signals.

@@indianajones3315 when I think of what you are saying, I think of what happened after NVDAs last earnings where they beat their already high expectations in earnings, and they sold off massively during the day. Is that selloff what you are referring to as the positioning backing that thesis up?

I think the best hedging instrument is SPY puts. And, SPY correlates to other things like gold, dollar, and bonds. So if you trade one you, you are kinda connected to all of it that way. It depends on how much of a down move is anticipated, to how much SPY delta you should carry; vertical spread vs naked puts
