As an amateur photographer I had the the naive idea that I need to learn how to do my own presets and don’t need to spend money buying other people’s presets. Until I heard another photographer and traveller say: “I used to buy presets from other professional photographers. It helped me develop my own editing process”. Jamie, I’ve been following you since I started getting interested in photography and your videos helped me a lot when I was trying to understand what I like to photograph the most. So, my first lot of presets will be bought from you. And they will be well used ☺️

I'm going to be one of those people who mention I am not fond of presets, but I'll also say that I am fond of you and your content. This channel was one of the first I found when I was stuck in ICU for almost 2 months last year. My dad was a photographer, but passed away a few years ago; I kept his camera with every intention to learn how to use it - so that's what did. I started watching whatever I could find online and practiced taking photos in the hospital room. I am still learning, although it seems with photography there is always more to learn and occasionally I will use presets to help me see how the settings alter an image then go from there. So, I've purchased previous sets and will get these as well and I am happy to do so because it supports you and this channel, one that continues to be reliable and consistent since I started watching. I am also a huge fan of the character Hannah Horvath on Girls, and remember you briefly mentioning you were as well despite all the criticism towards Dunham. - Steph

We never met, don't follow each other or else so this comment is totally unbiased... Yes, most presets out there are a scam. Yes, some people think they are only because they want a one click solution rather than a help. Yes, you could live a happy life without presets. But some people create presets the "right" way, spending time in Photoshop to generate (or recreate) a look and then a profile that wouldn't be achievable otherwise with only Lightroom. They take effort, colour theory knowledge, etc and they are genuinely good presets. I purchased 2 packs of yours and while I don't use them frequently, they do help me. I created spectacular images out of just 2 of your Aerochrome profiles and for those alone I can only thank you.

Okay, Jamie, I went away when you told me to do so. But how comes that my actual Portra film shots never look like your images edited with this so-called Portra presets? This fact is the reason why I call presets a scam and I would be glad if you could show me what I am missing from this equitation. (I shoot almost 40% of my non-revenue sessions to medium format film, and I use Portra as colour stock.) I really hope you can explain it as I usually find your videos really useful and reasonable. I've learnt a lot from you.

😂 So much can affect how a shot taken on film looks, from the temperature it was stored at, to the lens it was shot through, to how it was developed, to how it was scanned (and a hundred other factors). People worry about the difference in camera sensors, but this pales into insignificance compared to how much film can vary. There is no precise definitive ‘look’ for any film. Just the taste of those shooting it.

Hi Jamie, many thanks for your work, I just have a question about the presets, I've noticed that you use a lot of different profile in camera lightroom when you applied the presets, some times you have adobe standard, some times camera's profile like portrait or standard camera profile. I know this can create different final looks... which profile do you recommend to have the most consistent work? I mostly shoot with the Ricoh GR III. many thanks
@jamiewindsor Жыл бұрын
Hi. The profiles vary depending on what the default is for that camera. Previously, all my presets used either Adobe profiles or bespoke ones I made. However, with this pack I have not set a profile as the new Canon R series cameras use profiles in an entirely new way. If you don't apply the canon camera profiles, the photos look too washed out. So these were designed to work with whatever the default profile is set for each different camera.

@jamiewindsor Жыл бұрын
Yes. Unfortunately Canon put a heavy reliance on their own picture styles to work on their raw files for the R range. If you don't set Lightroom to apply this automatically, your images will look washed out. You need to go to your *PREFERENCES > PRESETS >* Find your camera in the dropdown menu and change the *Default* from *Adobe Default* to *Camera Settings.* Then reset any images you've already imported and re-apply the preset.

It’s possible. There’s no quick way to switch it, though. I would need to make a preset that does it. The frames are meant to simulate the edges of the exposed negative, so they would appear black when printed.

@jamiewindsor3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t assign a camera profile with these presets because of the way the new Canon cameras work. Their cameras now give quite a flat image and the colour is corrected with their camera profiles. This has complicated the process of making presets a bit. Use whichever profile that works best for you with your camera.

The old Portra presets are not as good as these in my opinion. These have take about a year to develop and are more versatile and realistic. The older ones had a certain look, but didn’t work in all situations as well as I’d have liked. I’m better at making presets now than I was back then.

@@jamiewindsor thanks for the reply, I went ahead and bought them anyways and decided to compare the old ones to this current one, and I agree, they are really much better imo to achieve the Portra Look for a wider variety of lighting conditions. What's behind the meaning of pulled and pushed?
@jamiewindsor3 жыл бұрын
Pushing a film is when you shoot it as if it had a higher ISO than it does, and then compensating for it in the development. Pushing it basically under exposing the film which gives it more contrast. Pulling it the opposite. Pulling gives you softer look with lifted shadows and detailed highlights. Portra takes over exposing well.

First of let me say this is absolutely beautiful work. You have single handedly restored my love for digital photography, which is great because i was spending way too much money on film developing hahaha thank you so much!! you deserve nothing but love and F all them (preset) haters. I do have a doubt though. Why did you choose to separate the frames as PNGs this time around, i noticed on other cases the frames are more easily applied through LR instead of having to switch to PS. Also there are some frame actions for LR but they seem to do nothing, I am right or am i doing something wrong?
@jamiewindsor2 жыл бұрын
Hi. The PNGs are extra additions. They are actual scans of real film frames whereas the Lightroom ones are just an effect. With regards to why the frames don’t work: I don’t know for sure without having access to your computer, but the most likely cause is that you are still using an older version of Lightroom. The frames are made with masks and Adobe completely changed how masks work between Lightroom 2021 and Lightroom 2022. I had to completely rebuild the frames for the latest version of Lightroom, but it looks like they’re not backwards compatible with the old version.

@jamiewindsor3 жыл бұрын
This is actually a very interesting comment for a video I’m writing at the moment. Can you elaborate? Why would this be a ridiculous proposition in your eyes?
@inigotaylor94013 жыл бұрын
@@jamiewindsor hi jamie, i didnt see your reply till just now. My argument is perhaps in some eyes rather closed minded. Now perhaps more than ever people are transfixed on process, how we get to a picture technically as opposed to its value in terms of what it aims to communicate. Your channel bucks the trend of many and actually talks about photographs in far broader sense than "how did you do that" what camera do you use" "should I buy this", so first off I commend the varied subject matter. My point about digital filters and that type of effect particularly when it comes to film emulation Is that it is by its very definition pretentious. If a photographer is about to start making a series of images or a project the medium they choose is critical to realise their vision, it is of course my subjective view but we should choose the medium based upon its inherent characteristic, be that the resolution it allows, the grain structure it will produce etc etc. To start off making pictures with one medium with the intent to then in its final presentation try to emulate another to me seems futile. This could of course boil down to as it often does finances at ones disposal. Of course having a seemingly endless possibility of what we can do with our images is liberating but at the same time a curse, the best kind of pictures are often deliberately made with limited means. It is a tricky area to debate and I may sound hard line about it but in short photographs should on a technical level rely on the medium they are made in,(of course I am talking about the area of photography I am interested in which would be easily described as "straight") I stopped making digital images for my personal work last year for various reasons from the pragmatic in terms of storage and security to simply boredom of the instantaneous but when I did make personal work digitally the few times I tried to add the same filters I use for commercial work it just didn't feel right. I felt the qualities inherent in digital were what I should respect. Now I have begun to make work with 120 and 35mm again I stick to one stock and try in the same with my digital workflow to rely on my own technique in the field and restraint in printing to develop a signature that is as defined by limitation as it is by choice. Again this could be deemed as dogmatic by many. Hope that all makes sense, keep up the positive and thoughtful videos. Inigo p.s sorry if my initial comment was short and rude, its so rare that a channel responds to anything that isn't all out praise and adulation so I tend not to explain.
