Yes I agree with that, I also think its key to be able to draw just as well from imagination, this strengthens your ability like you wouldn't believe. Many jobs come from people who want there kid or pets done, and even though one may do a fantastic job, still its hard spending so much time on a picture realizing there are other guys out there just tracing the pic with a projector. So are you saying most of your work is done from life and not photos?

Very nice work! I like your process! I see that you use pastel sticks but can you recommend any brand of pastel pencils? I use mainly charcoal and do some oil painting but I've only recently started pastels. I've tried derwent pastel pencils but find them too hard/rough.
@GwynethSleuth12 жыл бұрын
Nice painting. Does the DVD have a photo of the model, or show her at times during the painting so we can see what the artist is actually looking at when he puts down the strokes?

Could you tell me what pastels you used exactly. They looked much more precise than the sticks. beautiful drawing. I loved it best unblended so the strokes are visible. Really wonderful.

Sorry, I just saw your comments now. My name is Elaine. I manage the WareingImages channel. Sadly Rob passed away recently but , as I managed his career & ordered his art materials for many years I am familiar with his techniques. For the initial drawing he used Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils, then moved on to Prisma Color Nu-Pastels. Then added softer pastels as he went along using assorted pastels from various manufacturers notably Unison, Rembrandt, Schminke & Sennelier. Although did use Rowney soft pastels as well at one stage, they changed their colours & consistency a few years ago and he did not like these so found alternatives from other manufacturers. He did bring out a video set “Capturing a Likeness” which you can download or live stream from our Vimeo channel vimeo.com/ondemand/robwareing . We are also planning a book on Pastel techniques retrospectively based on Rob’s teachings. If you would like to be kept informed about this please email wareingart@gmail.com

Great. I haven't worked on a pastel in years and only then they were still life ones, but just tonight I tried a couple of portraits. Drawing was good but pastel infill was rubbish. Then I found your vid. and I can see how I went wrong. I got bogged down in complications instead of keeping it simple like you, adding nice touches here and there. Thanks for the demo. I am looking forward to my next improved effort. (BTW I CAN do portraits, having done them in pencil and oils.)
